Terrell's happy to be a Bronco
BY FRANK SCHWAB
The Gazette
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - (KRT) - David Terrell isn't bitter that the New England Patriots cut him before the start of this season. Terrell, a receiver for the Denver Broncos, was just happy to get out of New England with his health and his career intact.
Terrell, the eighth overall pick of the 2001 draft by the Chicago Bears, said he spent 10 days in a hospital during training camp after a staph infection in his left leg. He has a scar on his shin, which is how his problems started.
Terrell said this summer he was running stadium stairs at his University of Michigan alma mater and missed a step. He cut his leg when he tripped.
About a week-and-a-half into Patriots training camp, the wound hadn't healed properly. A team doctor made an incision to help drain the wound and Terrell got in a hot tub not long after that.
"That's when I got the staph infection," Terrell said.
He made a trip to the hospital and a hole was cut in his leg to drain the staph infection, which is caused by bacteria entering the body. He spent plenty of his 10 days in the hospital wondering what the long-term damage would be.
"I didn't know," Terrell said. "It was scary for me."
Football wasn't Terrell's biggest concern, but the tough reality was New England's other receivers were in camp and passing him on the depth chart. New England had taken a chance on Terrell after four disappointing seasons with the Bears, and didn't have any strong ties to him. Terrell missed New England's first two preseason games and didn't do enough in the final two preseason games to win a job.
"I was missing games and they were going to go on without me," Terrell said. "There wasn't anything I could do. It wasn't like I had a thigh bruise. I had like a four- or five-inch hole in my leg.
"I couldn't leave until the infection was totally out of my body. It was pretty bad."
Terrell landed with the Broncos after New England cut him. Terrell hasn't played in a game for Denver because he was behind other receivers and had to learn the playbook. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said he wasn't sure if Terrell would be able to play against New England on Sunday or when he would be active on game day. But he is making progress.
"He's learning the system," Shanahan said. "He's getting better. He's proving to us that he's a football player."
Terrell said he's feeling good, he's happy to be in Denver and he isn't upset with the Patriots or coach Bill Belichick for cutting him.
"Not at all," Terrell said. "I don't hold anything against them. They did what they felt they needed to do."
Gause signed
Defensive end George Gause was signed to Denver's practice squad. Gause was among the Buffalo Bills' final cuts before the regular season.

Interesting. As I understand it, DT is a smallish Wr. like about 5'8" or so and maybe as heavy as a sack of flour. Or so. If he is that short, how can Plummer find him in the routes? If he plays, what can he do? Is he speedy? have good hands? Why didn't it work out in Chitown?

There was a "Terrell" who was that small. However, I will take your information. So, can he catch the ball?

Yeah, I dunno his top end spead but the skinny on him was that he'd show up for a game, play great, then disappear for awhile. I think I saw him in one pro game. But, he could just be another guy with the dropsies, who knows.

I heard an interview with Sundquist on AM 950 the Fan this morning and he was heaping praise on Terrell. He said:
- Pioli told him that the Pats would never have cut Terrell if he was completely healthy. They didn't want him taking up a roster spot for half the season... they probably needed them to fill spots on their porous D.
- They evaluated Terrell's film from Michigan and Chicago before they signed him.
- They are hopeful he can be on the field and "making a contribution" real soon.
On a WAY side note....
The one thing that Sundquist said that really caught my attention was heaping praise on Ekuban for his professional demeanor. (I know Med wasn't happy with his play early on -- wonder if that has changed?) He said that Ekuban was the guy that stood up in front of the whole team on Sunday and told them not to be too happy about the win because they needed to fix some things. He suggested players come in and work on Monday (normally a day off after a win). Not bad for a guy from a losing franchise. He probably likes the feel of winning and doesn't want it to stop ;D

I know the Lelie haters are looking for a Rod Smith type WR... perhaps Terrell can fill some of that gap. He's a big dude and should be able to play that posession WR spot pretty effectively.

Terrell is a Flava Clown with trouble on & off the field. I hope he gets his head on straight I like his size & potential.
He would make a nice catch mid game & act like TO then late in game when they really needed him he would drop balls. Not consistent at all & not much of a team guy.
Not very fast but he could be a good possession #2/3 guy if he can keep his head in the game & not try to be something he is not.

Pre draft report from Pro Football Weekly has Terrell running a 4.4/40. PFW quote - "Tremendous athlete. Big, strong, quick, fast and agile. Has exceptional balance and body control." PFW had him rated best WR in the draft ahead of, amongst others, Santana Moss. He was rated by PFW as tied with LaDainian Tomlinson for 3rd best prospect in that draft (Vick was top prospect). 8th player picked in that draft. Disappointing play with Chicago. Might turn out to be another former 1st round steal for us but I'm not holding my breath.

There should be little doubt that he is as talented as any one of our WRs but Smith. The thing is we are not passing as much so I can't see a huge impact for him. The one major thing I'm looking for is his down field blocking. That is the number one thing I'm looking for out of him.
Terrell is a good all around reciever, he put up some quality seasons in Chicago when you consider how bad their offenses were and that he was being targetted as the #1 or #2 threat at that time. Big, physical, good hands, and not slow by any stretch, to me his max upside is someone to take the place of Eddie Mac, but worst case I think he'll provide us with some decent short yardage and red zone production.
For this season I could see him taking the #3 WR role and doing some good work as a short yardage guy, Jake should like throwing to him when given the oportunity.

When he gets going in games we could see a Denver offensive explosion! I think with Terrell and Lelie on the field, along with Smith we could sneak in some runs while teams are getting ready to cover thier ass' Deep and break some big ones. Mismatchs are Shannys game and mismatchs we will have. Cant wait!

Never happen, we can't go deep consistantly because Jake can't consistantly throw it out there. We can however hopefully start to establish Shanny's own variety of the WCO better with a legitimate threat between the hash marks like Terrell can be if he lives up to the potential.

Thats not true I think Jake has been shakey this season and guarded with his deep ball but we have seen in the past he can hit it deep. Even if its not that consistant if we threaten to go deep its not like the other team is not going to cover it. Run a delay with Bell and with a good push he could take to the house from anywhere on the field.

Terrell could be perfect for us as a number 3 and maybe Rod replacement next year or the following. He's had something like 9QBs over 4 years and none of them worth a damn and abour thalf that many offensive schems and head coaches so hes nver had a chance to gel with an O and a QB to show his firt round potential.
The guy can catch and is a good red zone target for sure. Terrell, Nate, Rod and Lelie could make a very tough red zone set to cover with Tater or MA coming out of the backfield on play action. One of those guys will always have to be open in that scenario.

Wide Receiver
David Terrell, Michigan: Combines ideal size with tremendous athletic ability as well as the desire to be the best football player possible. When Terrell steps on the field, his physical skills automatically create a matchup nightmare for the opposing defensive coordinators. With the wide-receiver position shaping up extremely well, especially at the top -- with players such as Terrell, N.C. State's Koren Robinson, UCLA's Freddie Mitchell, Clemson's Rod Gardner, Wisconsin's Chris Chambers and the Miami Hurricanes' tandem of Reggie Wayne and Santana Moss -- there figures to plenty of mixed opinion on how this group will shake down. In my opinion, Terrell has a chance to be at the head of the class. His primary competition could be Robinson.

If the Bronco can get to the bye week without anyone seeing how they use this guy he'll a weapons just because he'll be unexpected. My hope is that Devoe, Watts and David Terrell all get a chance to show some stuff this season.

We are starting to resemble a salvage yard...or as it's now called...reconditioned equipment operation...
Yeah, we had to take a few parts to the scrap heap, but we are doing OK.
NO, DT is not 5-8. He's got Terrell Owens size. I had no idea he had a bad infection...those whirlpools are bacteria pools...anyone with an open sore is crazy to get in one. I don't care how much chemical they put in there, and is that very good for you either? I thought they used clorine to kill people!
Back in the old days (starts out like Grandpa Simpson), we stomped around the Great Sand Dunes...(that's another story), and we were all cut and bruised and generally tired...some guy named Jon Ostesno knew of a natural hot spring near Glenwood Springs. I doubt it's now not fenced off. We went there, and man, all those cuts and scrapes healed like magic! When people talk about healing waters, I became a believer. But hot tubs are notorious for bacteria..
At any rate, it's nice to find out the reason DT was let go, maybe he will still make it. He evidently had a big head after the draft, lazy and arrogant with all his newfound millions...then he got injured...then he still didn't produce...I figured NE dumped him due to a crappy work ethic...all the triangle numbers are there for him to be an all pro reciever...I'm relieved it's a health issue. To top it off, the guy should finally be humbled a bit. He was worshiped at Michigan as much as Desmond Howard. I'm not getting my hopes up but the guy is a specimen like T.O. if we can just get the tin man a heart. His upside is fantastic...maybe finally he realizes he's on the final rung of the ladder.
someone should put a photo of MoC on his locker just to remind him.

Don't ever talk about my adopted Son Cecil that way again...He's starting to make a little noise...he was never asked to play special teams at CSU...he's starting to get a clue how the NFL works. I predict he's going to wind up a really good FB in a year or two.
He's a freaking Bull with 4.55 speed, 230 pounds. Still raw. He was a feature back that needs to learn how to block and recieve as a FB, but the talent is there. And he's a bull.
I saw him carry a player...literally on his back, into the end zone at CSU.
He's very similar to a young Bettis.

If you haven't noticed, Cecil has made it onto the gunner/WedgeBuster spot on special teams. He's very underrated. He just needs a little more time to develop as a FB.
He thought he was a feature back. Now that that back is broken, he can concentrate on his true calling, but he has to learn how to block, tackle, and catch balls as a FB, but the talent is there...trust me.
He can carry the rock. That isn't a problem. I predict surprising things still out of him. I could be wrong, but he's a pretty solid power back.

Might turn out to be another former 1st round steal for us but I'm not holding my breath.
I held my breath for these former first rounders:
Gerard Warren . . .
Ebenezer Ekuban . . .
Courtney Brown.
Other than the fact Brown has the same first name as half the sorority girls in Boulder, I'd say these three have worked out pretty well so far. At least Terrell was cheap . . . and he apparently has the raw skills. If he's another Marcus Nash, Shanny will jettison him. Besides, I'm liking Charlie Adams a lot.

So: he's got size, some speed and can show some skills. He just needs to decide if he really, really wants to play football for money and get his a$$ in gear. Is that about it?
It has been said that some of these underachievers with talent may do better when they are around people who can win, what to win, have won, and know what it takes to win. Talk about Smith, Wilson, Lynch and Pryce, for example. It would not be easy, I would think, to loaf through the games or practices around these guys. I would think, too, that the new Dline guys are liking what's happening, and would not take kindly to anyone crapping on their parade. It is possible that you might see DT get going with the Broncos. But he's got to get out to the field first, and he cannot do that unless he shows something in practice.
I don't know that I am so disppointed in Lelie----yet. I am disappointed in Watts. So, I would hope that Adams, Devoe or DT would show up and grab that 3 and 4 WR position. Right now it looks like Adams.

Regarding David Terrell, I thought that we would have heard more about him by now. Meaning that he would be on the field in 3 WR sets. As far as making him heir to Rod Smith's spot... maybe in a couple of years and with a whole lot of luck, the Broncos might have found another gem in the scrapheap.

By the way, a personal note on this staph crap that hit Terrell.
I caught a staph infection April '04 that damn near killed me. Came out of nowhere. Woke up screaming with pain. Did the 911/ER thing, a week in ICU. The infection was all over me and I was near dead. I had endocarditis, spinal meningitis (hence the pain) and other stuff. Took 2 months of constant medicine drip IV to kill the infection.
The staph resuled in heart damage requiring open heart surgery to replace a valve. It was performed the day after the Docs were sure the infection was gone. Lost 45 pounds. Bad, bad ****, this staph stuff.
Several issues ago Sports Illustrated had an article on a new strain of staph that has evolved resistant to older medicines that has hit the sports world. Athletes get it from simple things like mat burns, artificial turf, misc. cuts, etc. It's called MRS for short (Methyline Resistant Staphococus). Might be what got Terrell.
Anyway, hopefully he's completely recovered. I'm mostly there. Asked my cardioligist if it's OK for me to run in a marathon. He said "Sure, but you won't win". Wise ass.

One thing we can take away from the success, so far, of the Browns cast offs is that winning cures a lot of ills. Playing for a perennial loser doesn't do much for a guy's attitude. Hopefully the work ethic and attitude of a top knotch organization will help motivate him to succeed.
