Taking out the Wash

Broncos drown Redskins behind timely plays by Bell, Gold, Pryce

Eureka! Look at what the Broncos have found.

In a bone-numbing rain, the Broncos turned two touchdowns from Tatum Bell, a blocked field goal and one well-placed arm by linebacker Ian Gold into a grinding 21-19 victory against the Washington Redskins at Invesco Field at Mile High.

The win pushed the Broncos to 4-1 and keeps them atop the AFC West with the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots on the way to Denver next weekend.

"This was one of those, round-for- round, punch-for-punch deals," Gold said. "Last one standing. Sometimes you have to do things to make it through. We were able to do the things to make us the last one standing.

"And I'm just glad to have been in the right place at the right time."

That he was. Gold knocked away the Redskins' two-point conversion attempt with 1 minute, 9 seconds to play. Had Gold not deflected Mark Brunell's pass, Washington receiver David Patten was running free across the back of the end zone, and the Broncos probably were looking at overtime.

Instead, the Redskins were left to onside kick for the last chance. Broncos receiver Ashley Lelie recovered the ball, and that was that.

"That's a hard play, a two-point conversion, you have to have God on your side," Broncos defensive end Trevor Pryce said. "We had Gold; in Gold we trust. That was a great play because that kid was open."

Said Gold: "It was actually just the inside of my arm. I just threw my arm up and hit the ball. It wasn't really a play I was trying to make. It just inadvertently happened. I'm glad I was there, the right place at the right time."

And with that the Broncos walked away with a victory despite the fact the Redskins outgained them 447 yards to 257, had more than twice as many first downs (28-11) and held the ball for 33:49, more than 7 minutes longer than the Broncos did.

It was a nasty win. I looked like Denver could have won big if not for the sudden influx of bad calls there in the final 6-7 minutes of play. Hopefully this game will build some character to this team.

Now with NE coming to town, I really hope the offense can get the ball moving with the passing game. They are really due for a breakout on both sides of the offense, and I hope it happens next week. I also hope that there is no rain or snow in the forcast come next Sunday.

Shanahan said it best after the game; "You do what you have to do to win & hope a few breaks fall your way"

Blocked FG...Blocked 2-point attempt...fumble recovery, chance bounces of the ball one & all that Denver fans have lamented as lacking in their favor in the past.

Only slightly overcoming several bonehead mental lapses by the likes of Lenny Walls & Karl Paymah

Maybe the football gods took pity...for one week anyway.

Well well well. Bob was right.
