View Full Version : Oskie................score!!!

By now most of you know what this is all about. I'm starting it a few hours early...hoping that we get a good amount of participation and KARMA!!!
Every thread gets the same question, so I'll answer it first.
Growing up we used to have a cadence that we would call there in the Springs when we intercepted a ball on defense. We would holler OSKIE and the defense knew to put a hat on the nearest opponent. I'm sure many of you have similar stories, but to me, OSKIE is when the football fun really started. I've hit people pretty damn hard in my life, but I swear that the hardest I ever hit anybody was during an INT return. Poor dude just wanted to try and tackle one of our players... he never saw me coming. Some say his feet were 6 feet in the air. I just remember how clean it felt...effortless! I guess that's why it always stayed with me. Plus, when I moved to Houston I was suprised that we still used the same cadence.
I'd been whining about turnovers for two seasons now. Many arguements with several intelligent posters over how 3 and outs were nice, but we needed more TO's. So anyhow, before the season started I send TJ a PM and ask him to change my name to OSKIE for good karma and increased turnovers. I guess TJ just figured out what Oskie means as well...but he changed it for me and the rest, as they say, is history (or quickly becoming history anyhow!).
A quick thank you for everybody that posts on this thread. Your support is working!!! Look at the #'s Bronco brothers and sisters. We're getting the job done and the more turnovers we get this weekend the more likely we are to pound the DEADSKINS into submission!
So, in order to bring many a turnover and TOUCHDOWNS directly related to those turnovers....
OSKIE SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.
3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.
4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.
6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.

Do I dare jinx this thread? I see this team coming out with a huge defensive start, and possibly making their toughest stand of the year early in this game. OKSIE!

I'm totally clueless...
I just hate Ray Ray.
I get it...Oskie means to start blocking on a defensive turnover....I think...
I have been watching football for almost 40 years and never heard of an Oskie...

Now that could happen!!!
Mock, pretend you were a corner and I was a safety. The other team's QB throws the ball right to you and you catch it...an Interception! As a safety I'm watching the ball and see you catch it. As soon as I see you catch it, I yell OSKIE! Not necessarily for you or the other defensive backs b/c they likely were watching the ball and witnessed the INT. But, the DL and perhaps even the LB's had their backs to the INT. They're trying to fight their way to the QB so they don't see what happens after the ball is thrown. By yelling OSKIE or OSKIE SCORE the DL and LB's know to block whomever is closest to them.
Hogan mentioned putting a lick on Portis. He likely is going to be watching the ball carrier and trying to chase him down... that leaves him open for a blind side "meltdown". I think there is a new rule in place now that prevents "unnecessary roughness" during returns to include punt, kick, fumble, and Int returns......but it would sure be worth the penalty!!!

The rule is only extended to p***ies on offense who "Do not attempt to Tackle the ball carrier." Sure sounds like Portis to me.

I love big defenses. OSKIE!
I would love to see this defense put a zero on the scoreboard. OSKIE!
If our defense scores 7 points per game we have a 30 point offense. OSKIE Score!

I guess later in the season when the karma gets going Oskie will have to put up a poll as to WHICH Broncos defender is going to score rather than IF. I know there is a lot of football ahead but this is going to be fun.

Interesting... at first I thought it was just a local thing there in Duh Springs. Then I played ball in Houston and during the first practice out came the OSKIE! Where did you play ball and to what level did you play.
I'm also interested to know if anybody else used OSKIE when they played ball. I imagine if South Texas used it then Lousiana, Mississippi, 'Bama, and Floriduh used it as well. What about the North East? That's big football in and around New Jersey/York and Penn.
QT, I like your idea!!! Help a brotha out!

It's amazing that nobody can figure out exactly when or where the term Oskie started. I know Cal's mascot is name Oskie. I don't know how long it's carried that name though? I know that there is a cheer that just about ever kid in Illinois knows called Oskie...wow-wow. I know that Bob Neyland mentioned Oskie in his Football Maxims some half a century ago..... but nobody knows anything about the word/call before that. Interesting. It would be something special to hear the entire crowd at Mile High yelling OSKIE after an INT......that would be the shiat right there!

I played high school football for Granada Hills in the sprawling melting pot called the San Fernando Valley over 20 years ago, but I never heard that term until several years later. I assumed it was a regional thing until recently.

I have a house full of people watching the game. One is my nephew who is a coach. As the Redskins are lining up for the field goal, he suddenly says. Okay. Time to block the kick, pick it up and run it back for a score. Turned out only two out of three but we were all giving him the high five.
BTW, just for the record, Al Wilson looked silly mincing around with the ball. That was hilarious to watch.
