View Full Version : Give us the Cardinals!

Back from the game here in Mexico City. I know there's a merged thread but I think the experience deserves a thread of its own.

The SF fanbase is huge here yet when the teams were introduced, the Cardinals came out waving a Mexican flag and that began to turn the tide.
Little by little the crowd started lean towards Arizona and at the end the boo's were cascading when the Niners had the ball. Arizona somehow managed to click with a crowd full of Cowboy, Steeler, Niner, Dolphin and (yes in fifth place) Bronco fans.

During the first quarter (I think it was a punting situation) it was announced that Mexico had won the under 17 Soccer World Championship beating Brazil 3-0. The crowd went nuts and the players didn't know what to do. They prolly thought we had no idea what was going on (cheering while the punting unit was out!)

At one point the ref spoke in Spanish too..

Record braking attendance (102,000), my former school's choir sang the Star Spangled Banner, the game was quite terrible but in the end it was a great experience. It was a NAFTA violation, though!

NFL: one of your sorriest franchises just found a home. Give us the Cardinals!
(problem is, I wouldn't be cheering for the home team ;) )

From a Bronco fan in Phoenix...Take em! More televised bronco games would be the result!

Bill Bidwell.....outside of Jeffrey Loria, he's the worst owner of a professional franchise I've ever seen.

If Mex City took the Cards......they'd lynch him by season's end.

Maybe, but he's just inept.....not overtly decietful like Bidwell, Loria, Irsay, Davis, Brochu, Modell etc. are/were.......that makes a difference with me.

The NFL should not be doing games outside of the United States during the regular season, ESPECIALLY across continents like they are proposing I think. There are so little games and each one is so meaningful, and to lose a home game would hurt so much. And it would be really retarded as well since most of the world hates football outside of the US.

I'm glad you said Bob Irsay. If it wasn't for him Elway wouldn't be a Bronco. If it wasn't for Elway the Ravens would be in Cleveland. The Avalanche would still be the Nordiques. The Rockies would be the Zephers (sp). The Nuggets would suck. Ok Nuggets would still suck. Thanks Mr. Irsay

The Avalanche would still be the Nordiques.

This is actually not true. Aubut just sold out to the highest bidder when he didn't get the casino deal he wanted from the Quebec goverment.

No offense to anyone here, but I really miss the Nords...they were unique and tough as nails.....I didn't feel much sadness when say, the Jets left Canada but I did when the Nords left......the feel they had cannot be equaled by any other franchise (even the Habs) and it's a feel that never transferred with them when they went to Denver.

Most of the world hasnt seen it so they dont really hate it, just dont know about it. The NFL is trying to promote the sport internationally and having one game ni Mexico City and two teams having to travel a short distance is not that big of a deal. Mexico is our neighbor AND the NFL is growing immensely in popularity down there as immigrants (legal and illegal) are watching the sport while in America and falling in love.

I mean, how can you not fall in love? I ****ing love football and Im betting a large portion of Mexico, Mexicans, and any other people out there not American would if they had the chance to see it regularly.

They have soccer, which is not really understood by the populace here, but is immensely popular in the world.

I guarantee you that the futbol fans would be turned off by the relative lack of passion exhibited by fans at NFL games in comparison to futbol games.

You know that's a really good point. I've been to a fubol game in Munich before. Now that's an event. Makes Arrowhead or Invesco look like church. I talk alot about what's going on at the stadium but somebody has to do it. I've been watching alot of old Mile High games the last couple days and if I worked for the Broncos I'd make every Broncos season ticket holder a "Best of Mile High game tape". I'd pack 60 minutes of Mile High memories in each tape and send them off with the season tickets. It should be required viewing before any season ticket holder gets their new seat assignment. The old timers would be exempt but even they could probably use a refresher course of what the stadium was like.

Hell why limit it at the season tix holders. The scalpers or atleast Broncos fan scalper (if there is such a thing) should do the same. I don't know what it is that amazes me about that old stadium and the crowd of the 70's 80's 90's that intriques me so much but it gives me a rush like nothing else.

Help Bring Back the Mile High Magic! :Broncos: :Broncos: :Broncos:

Umm, right. Thats why they hate baseball, because of the lack of passion in the fans. Latinos love baseball but the passion isnt like futbol.

Football has a chance to succeed in the world, just needs to work on getting it out there. Slowly, basketball did it, the NFL can to. Its not futbol, its entirely different. Its oblongball and it bounces funny and squirts out.

I like it. The franchise moves to Mexico City, the government nationalizes the franchise and changes its name to the Sopilotes.

BTW: The ref is from El Paso, Texas. I lived there for about a decade and trust me, it's more Mexico than Texas. No surprise he spoke Spanish. I heard that on the radio and it warmed my heart.

From NFL.com (http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/recap/NFL_20051002_SF@ARI):

"MEXICO CITY (Oct. 2, 2005) -- The NFL threw a fiesta at Azteca Stadium, and the biggest regular-season crowd in league history turned up wearing vibrant colors and singing raucous cheers...

"The Cardinals (1-3) agreed to give up a home game to make history, and the NFC West rivals played in front of 68,398 more fans than they drew for last season's meeting at Sun Devil Stadium. The crowd topped the previous NFL record for a regular-season game, when 102,368 fans saw the Los Angeles Rams play the 49ers at the L.A. Coliseum on Nov. 10, 1957...

"Rackers loved the mountain air in a city 2,000 feet higher than Denver, connecting from 40, 45, 48, 23, 43 and 24 yards to fall one short of the NFL record for field goals in a game, held by four players."

(My note: The game's last play resulted in a 4th down with about 25 seconds left. Rackers could have been sent out to kick his 7th FG on the last play. The Cardinals did not elect to run up the score in order to achieve the record.)

"The NFL is widely popular south of the border, with nearly one in five Mexicans claiming an interest in the league…

"Both teams took the field to wild cheers amid cheerleaders and fireworks, but free safety Robert Griffith got the biggest roars when he led the Cardinals out of their giant inflatable helmet wildly waving a Mexican flag.

"When McCown made a spinning move to dodge a tackler in the fourth quarter, the fans shouted 'Ole!'"

There are so many things to love about Mexico and there are so many things that could be vastly improved. Our cultures are merging. There's no way around that. The NFL is helping to bridge the cultural gap. Good for them.

It didnt take Basketball long to spread. The Dream Team really brought the NBA to the world. You will hear this sentiment echoed by many of the NBA internationals today. Nowitzki was discovered in part by Charles Barkley at a camp.

Meck, you guys love tailgating and the social aspect of sport. You NEED to go to next year's world cup. It is the event of all sporting events. You would love it. I went to the cup when it was here (and a shadow of what it is in Europe) and had a blast. Too bad you cant drive your bus to Germany. That would be fun to park outside of the stadium in the villages for a week and party with the world.

You'd be surprised, Alec...There are several games televised nationally every week. And people who are willing to pay for Sunday Ticket have that option too. Football is really popular in Mexico. A lot of knowledgeable fans, believe it or not...

If you want a decent atmosphere, give the WC a miss and get to Buenos Aires for a classico (Racing/Independiente) or super classico (Boca/River) or Bogota. Even I call that crazy and I´ve seen all kinds of stuff here. Overall, I enjoy the whole atmosphere at a Euro far better than at a WC and I believe next summer won´t be any different.
