Alabama State Senator: Hurricanes Were 'Judgment of God' on Sin
By Thomas Spencer
Religion News Service
Sept. 28 - Hurricane Katrina and other storms that battered the Gulf Coast were God's judgment on sin, according to Alabama state Sen. Hank Erwin, a Republican from Montevallo.
"New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast have always been known for gambling, sin and wickedness," Erwin wrote this week in a column he distributes to news outlets. "It is the kind of behavior that ultimately brings the judgment of God."
"Warnings year after year by godly evangelists and preachers went unheeded. So why were we surprised when finally the hand of judgment fell?" Erwin wrote. "Sadly, innocents suffered along with the guilty. Sin always brings suffering to good people as well as the bad."

Bill Bennett's View On Abortion & The Crime Rate
Addressing a caller's suggestion that the "lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30 years" would be enough to preserve Social Security's solvency, radio host and former Reagan administration Secretary of Education Bill Bennett dismissed such "far-reaching, extensive extrapolations" by declaring that if "you wanted to reduce crime ...
if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down."
Bennett conceded that aborting all African-American babies "would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do," then added again, "but the crime rate would go down."

Bennett throws some red meat to the Limbaugh/Savage/Coulter/Maulkin audience, eh?
...former Reagan administration Secretary of Education Bill Bennett dismissed such "far-reaching, extensive extrapolations" by declaring that if "you wanted to reduce crime ...
if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down."
The book of racist virtues, by Bill Bennett
Aborting black children is an effective way to reduce the crime rate.
We're not surprised that kind of racist drivel is being peddled over the public airways, but we are stunned by who is doing the peddling: William Bennett, the self-styled virtues czar of the United States and former education secretary under President Reagan. He has a connection to Texas, earning his doctorate degree in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin.
This week, Bennett said on his syndicated radio show: "I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down," he said. Then he quickly added: "That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down."
What is morally reprehensible is that Bennett's racist statements fuel the specious belief that blacks are genetically wired to be criminals. Bennett should know that race is not a predictor of criminal behavior.
Researchers long have pointed to socioeconomic factors as a primary cause for criminal behavior. But Bennett didn't say that aborting all poor children would reduce the crime rate, but rather aborting all black children — rich, poor or middle-income — is the way to lower the crime rate.

Bill Bennett is not only a racist, but he's a particularly pathetic breed of degenerate gambler. Casino estimates, which are notoriously conservative estimates, claim that Bennett wagered and lost over $8 million over a ten year period. Even worse, he did it on slot machines!
Way to target the game that enjoys the most significant house advantage, Bill. Real deep thinker, aren't you?
If they aborted all the people as stupid as you, the casinos would have to work a lot harder to make a buck.

I'd rather be part of the "Libertarian irrelevance" than to be aligned or associated in any way with people such as Erwin & Bennett.
Retreat quietly to your Libertarian irrelevance.
Which is worse - irrelevant or evil?
Take your tiny percentage of the vote and warm yourself with your own righteousness.
I've read some blogs deconstructing the liberal/MSM response to Bennett's remarks and while Bennett himself stepped into it by not carefully phrasing what he said, the claim that he's a racist is wrong. Bennett was indirectly basing his argument (such as it was) on "Freakonomics" (which I've read) and he did a disservice to that work.
Bennett is still an idiot, however - and that view isn't based on just his latest foot-in-mouth comments.

Hey Jim you know what's funny is if that Hurricane would have wiped out his home he would be saying that the Devil was out to get him or some such stupid Sh_t.
You know it takes a republican to believe this kind of garbage.

Is the American psyche headed for a nervous breakdown?
Is it possible to speak of a kind of social schizophrenia? Not schizophrenia in a technical sense, not the latest PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) definition, but the more general sense of being "split" and living a tragically dysfunctional life?
If the answer is yes, then clearly one of America's multiple personalities is running amuck and dragging the moral/rational infrastructure of our nation into a pathology of brokenness.
George Bush isn't exactly a poster boy for someone who's functionally in touch with reality. Hey, our planet and children's lives are being trashed by this man's brainless, unethical policies, so it's time to drop the politeness and say it like it is:
The dark side of America is IN OUR FACE.
Mother Nature has been turned into a whore for Texas energy companies, the rest of the planet thinks we're a bunch of totalitarian lunatics, our retirements and health care are being skimmed off for tax breaks for multi millionaires, our environmental protection laws are being dismantled by clowns and criminals, and the lunatic fringe of American Christianity has reduced the loving and compassionate teachings of Jesus Christ to pamphlets of self righteous venom (just who is it that Pat Robertson DOESN'T hate?)
In other words, we seem to be heading into national nervous breakdown. When conscience, rationality, and the rule of law are replaced with "take the money and run," and "we're all going to go up in a cloud of Armageddon smoke next week anyway," and "might makes right," then Pandora's Box is wide open and the inmates are running the asylum.
The corporate media perpetuates this craziness by being the wacko voices inside our head. Gee, Fox Snooze says immorality is morality and science is for sissies, so why should we worry about hurricanes or a hopelessly mortgaged economy or if we trade off the blood of a few thousand more young Americans for Iraqi oil? Anyway, who cares if our president is a liar, liar, pants on fire -- Father knows best, doesn't he?
Not if he's raping Mother Nature! Not if he's letting fish get so filled with mercury that it's going to give your children brain damage. Not if he basically murdered New Orleans by under funding the levees and wiping out the protective wetlands. And not if he's systematically wiping out the American middle class (remember what it used to be like to have retirements, health care, and just ONE job?).
Craziness is like cancer; if you don't watch it, it will take over everything. Life doesn't let us spin too far off into brainless selfishness without massive and irreversible consequences. And if the adults of America don't intervene and take our country back from the Heart of Darkness Republican Party, then the best of us; our Republic, our children, our science, our spirituality, our EVERYTHING is headed straight for pitiful, outpatient brokenness.

While her defense of Bennett's statements are better then his own, it still doesn't make it any less of a idiotic statement. At least she doesn't claim he was taken out of context like he does. Nobody is claiming he's advocating the abortion of black people but that he's implying that most black people are criminals.

If that's what they're claiming then they are still wrong. His statements are based on the fact that the crime rate among blacks is higher than the crime rate of the general population which is indisputable. It was a dumb thing to say, but the outrage is opportunistic and either fake or ignorant.

I don't think so. Bennett's comments are akin to those by a Muslim moderate a few months back (paraphrasing): "Most Muslims are not terrorists, but most terrorists are Muslims".

Is it as big of a deal as it's been made out to be? NO. But neither was Howard Dean's comments about the Republican Party being a party of white males. While both comments might be statistically accurate they lack tact. Dean didn't apologize for his comments and it's likely Bennett won't either.
But it does piss me off when Bennett goes on Hannity and Colmes and says it was taken out of context. Umm, no it wasn't.

Bennett put his mouth where his party is
The reaction was swift and angry to former Reagan honcho William Bennett's oddball racist crack that aborting black babies could reduce crime. The problem, though, was that those who instantly denounced Bennett were all Democrats.
Even as calls were made for an apology or for Bennett to be fired from his nationally syndicated radio show, neither President George W. Bush nor any top GOP leader said a mumbling word about Bennett.
Eventually, the White House issued a weak statement calling Bennett's comments "inappropriate." At first glance, the delay seemed especially strange since Bush, Republican National Chair Ken Mehlman and top Republican strategist Karl Rove have barnstormed throughout the country, wining and dining every black group that will give them a hearing.
They've spent millions to back up their public pledge to make the Republican Party racially inclusive. That raised some hope that the GOP's much-vaunted outreach effort might stop the crude race-baiting that many Republicans had turned into a fine art. Even the tout by Senate Majority leader designate Trent Lott on segregation that touched off a furor a few years back didn't totally smash that hope.

Re: the blog W*GS is quoting:
Re-read posts #4 and #8.
But thanks for (once again) making a complete ass of yourself. You should look into that as a professional career, since you've perfected it, LABF.
On the other hand, LABF has used the term "we" to describe the Democratic Party, home to Fred "Fags burn in hell" Phelps, Robert "Sheets" Byrd, and Ted "Chappaquidick" Kennedy.
That should tell you where LABF's genuine ideology resides.
This one post just provides too much material...

Your racism is showing.
I'll give you a hint as to why you're a racist:
What are the "right" kinds of blacks and Asians? La Shawn Barber and Malkin clearly aren't, in your view. What political beliefs "should" blacks and Asians have, LABF?
That's one thing about LABF - he's the gift of unintentional stupidity that just keeps on giving...
