I think Vatech has the best front 7 in college football, not to mention the best corner. Ohio St. has a great pair of LB(s), but I don't think they are as physical as Vatech upfront.

Penn State? I would like to remind everyone that Indiana is undefeated as well, dosen't mean they have a great D. Penn St. were getting all they could handle from Northwestern last week, they have a Nebraska/Kansas St. schedule.

BUCKS! BUCKS! BUCKS! That loss to Texas is on the offense not the D, Va Tech is looking pretty good as well, but truth be told the ACC is down this year, both the powerhouses in the conference are breaking in brand new QB's. NC State has a pretty good D as well but are a little lacking on the other side of the ball, so Va Tech will have to do something to someone else outside of the ACC to really earn it IMO.

Last season, Penn State was the only defense in the country to not allow more than 21 points in a single game. The only reason why Penn State didn't win more games last season was because their offense also happened to be among the worst in the country. Plus, they have a good number of future NFL players in Tamba Hali, Alan Zemaitis, Paul Polsluszny and Dan Connor. I never said the Nittamy Lions were the best defense in the country, I just said they deserved to be mentioned in the poll.

Iowa and Michigan have been huge disappointments and OSU lost at home in the biggest game of the year so far. Michigan State is a saving grace.

I think it's time to add Virginia Tech to the powerhouse category along with Miami and FSU (though FSU certainly hasn't been a powerhouse since 2000).

Big 10 isn't impressive at all this year, I did say that both Michigan and Iowa were overrated, but even I didnt expect this from them. OSU has to win the title this year, Purdue has lost, we have MSU at home, Wisconsin is bound to drop some games here shortly, it's Ohio State's to lose.

Ohio State is the gem of the conference though, not Michigan State. Drew Stanton is good and MSU has been a surprise, but Ohio State has looked tough as nails and losing by 3 to the #2 team in the nation(whom we outplayed, which makes it sting that much more) is te only thing keeping them from being a serious national championship contender.

PSU is back! I'd like to see any team go up against our defense. Only 2 TDs allowed against both NW and Minnesota. PSU has the #1 defense!

Va tech or OSU...I think I'll pass. I don't think that those two have the best D in the country. No clue who does because I spend to much of my time paying attention to I-aa.

Well...gameday just did a piece on the best defense and the Hokies didn't even get mentioned...so I guess there is your Answer.

Fowler - FSU
Herbstreet - Alabama
Corso - OSU
Desmond Howard - None of them sticks out - 10-08-05

I gotta say... this would be far easier to discuss if we compared by conferences.

For example, best defense in

ACC - VaTech or Miami
SEC - Georgia
Big XII - Texas
Pac 10 - USC
Big 10 -
MWC -
and so on....

Its pretty difficult for me to compare much more than that since we are just now starting conference play and some stats are pretty overinflated still... Ask me again in a few weeks...

ACC - Virginia Tech/Miami/FSU/BC - too close to call right now
Big XII - Texas
Big 10 - Ohio State
SEC - Georgia/Alabama/Auburn - same as ACC
Big East - UConn
Pac 10 - N/A - no defense officially played
MWC - Wyoming

Colorado's defense has really been good and if they keep the Texas game close I'd say they have the best D in the Big XII.

LOl at the Pac-10 best defense, totally agree with all you said.
