I couldn't find another thread about this. I thought it was interesting, and decent news. At least he is protected until next season. He seems like a guy with a lot of potential, but a great need for experience. I'd love to get him through mini-camps and another training camp, and see how he does next year.

It does seem strange that he tore his ACL in pregame warmups. What are the odds that this is overblown to be able to protect him on IR? Does anyone know what checks and balances are in place to keep a team from reporting fake injuries in order to protect a player?

Ernster out, Buhl in

Paul Ernster, who handled the Broncos' kickoff duties in the season opener at Miami, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right kicking knee during pregame warm- ups Monday night. Ernster was running when he took a fateful misstep. Signed to the Broncos' practice squad last week, the rookie was placed on injured reserve Wednesday and is out for the year. He was replaced on the practice squad by linebacker Josh Buhl, a former standout player at Kansas State who was recently cut by Tampa Bay.

What I tried to dig up yesterday and failed is... What is the difference between the designation Practice squad/IR and regular IR? Why wouldn't it all be the same if the player is protected and done for the year. Does anyone know?

I believe that other teams can take guys from your practice squad if they add them to the roster. They can't take guys on your IR. Correct me if that's wrong.

If he's on PS another team can offer him a contract, in which case he'd go on their active roster, but Den could move him to their active and still keep him.

IR means he's done for the year. I don't know how long his rook contract is/was for. I'd guess it was 4 years with a small bonus. If so, he's ours till we cut him or he goes FA.

There are penalities (like lost picks or somethign) for lying about IR. I'd guess he's got a torn right ACL. Soccer players come back, so .... good luck to him.

Yea, I don't think this one is a fake injury. Why risk being caought and penalized for a guy that already cleared waivers once to get on the practice squad? I mean, if anyone was seriously interested, they could have got him earlier.
