According to an AP article in the paper out here, the Chefs have heard about Bailey's comments while miked up that the Chefs weren't playing hard. Vermeil said, "I know this - none of our players said Champ Bailey didn't play hard when we beat them by three touchdowns last year out here. Eddie Kennison didn't say that Champ Bailey was not playing hard." Vermeil was described as clearly irritated.
I knew when I heard that Monday night that it would become bulletin board material. I don't know about having our players miked. It's great to watch but stuff like this makes you wonder if it's worth it. Vermeil said he refused to allow any of his players to be miked.
Thoughts?

Chiefs coach does not appreciate cornerback talking down his team
By News Wire Reports
September 28, 2005
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - With the help of Champ Bailey and Monday Night Football microphones, the Kansas City Chiefs should be well motivated for their next game against the Denver Broncos.
First, the Chiefs (2-1) were embarrassed 30-10 on Monday night at Invesco Field at Mile High.
Then they found out that while the rout was taking place, Bailey, a Broncos cornerback, accused them on national television of not playing hard.
"The way they played up there in Kansas City, it ain't the same, though," said Bailey, who was miked by ABC.
Speaking with teammates on the Denver bench after the Broncos had taken control of the game in the first half, Bailey clearly was heard to say, "They're playing a little different. They're not playing as hard. I ain't going to relax, though."
The Chiefs beat Denver last year in Kansas City 45-17, dominating the Broncos almost as thoroughly as they were dominated Monday. They host the Broncos on Dec. 4.
"I know this, none of our players said Champ Bailey didn't play hard when we beat them by three touchdowns last year out here," coach Dick Vermeil said Tuesday. "(Chiefs receiver and former Broncos player) Eddie Kennison didn't say that Champ Bailey was not playing hard."
Vermeil tried to downplay Bailey's remarks but was irritated.
"That's why I don't allow players to be miked. I don't know what (Bailey) was referring to. That's a player's opinion," he said. "Champ Bailey's a fine kid, respected by everybody in the league. But you put a mike on him, you never know what you're going to hear. You catch some things guys say in frustration and you use them to enhance the broadcast. But sometimes that embarrasses the player."

Champ wasn't knocked out by anything. He just aggravated the same hamstring which isn't torn.

Yeah, the difference is Roaf wasn't talking about how tough he was, or how weak the other team was when he went down.

Yeah, but then again we don't know what Roaf was saying because Dick don't want his players mic'ed up.
I think it's hilarious that chef fan chooses to question Champs toughness who's yet to miss a game in the NFL and has the current most games played in a row by a DB.
Oh yeah, and he was also putting in tackles against the chefs and san diego while his shoulder was strapped in a harness after being dislocated.
I would have thought after watching the chefs DBs at work for years, you would have learned to spot a p***y as opposed to a tough player but I guess knuckleheads never learn.

So, let me get this straight, Bailey is somehow soft because he was injured later in the game. Hmmm, I guess the same thing can be said about Rodney Harrison.
And while we're on the subject, you don't think players are constantly running their mouths out on the field? This is an issue for Vermeil because he needs to have SOMETHING he can use to get his team fired up and this statement was on National TV.

That's kind of my question. If he weren't miked no one would be talking about this. Trash talking on the field is pretty much expected and no one pays much attention. But, do we really need to risk providing bulletin board material by having our players miked? Of course Vermeil is going to try to use this. I don't think Champ was talking trash at all but it's going to be taken that way. They're gonna twist this into him questioning their manhood, etc. Personally, I wouldn't allow our players to be miked.
As for Champ, his play and his consecutive start record speak for themselves. Non-issue. The guy got hurt making a nice tackle on a fullback while playing with his shoulder in a harness.

Seriously. I don't see the big deal in what he said. If last December a miked KC player said, "I don't know, they're different from when we played in September. This is akin to Den needing some locker room material to come to play in Jax. I mean, surely they don't recall leaving 10-14 pts on the field last year, losing after pretty much dominating statistically, and then with that loss and the loss in SD (or the Jokeland at Den) having to play Payaton in Indy. Nah, they couldn't recall that. Shanny would need some locker room material to remind them.

Vermeil said it himself, 'It's one player's opinion'. That's the truth. So when players are no longer allowed to a)have an opinion and b)express that opinion, then Vermeil can whine and moan. If you seriously thought the Chiefs were playing hard then either a)your team truly blows or b)you're blinded by your allegiance. Vermeil wasn't on the field so how could he know if his players were playing hard? Champ was on the field watching Priest go down like a shot dog and Larry Johnson take a knee rather than fight for extra yards. He covered a WR and saw other WR's who dropped easy passes and probably can assess whether they were running routes with gusto or were mailing it in after being punched in the mouth.
Champ's point still stands--you'd never get a half assed performance like that out of the Chiefs at Narrowhead. Whether someone wants to assess how hard the Broncos played in KC while getting their heads handed to them, so be it--it's just an opinion. Dickie needs something to fire up his guys since they will likely be torn to pieces by Westbrook on Sunday.

Dick should be mad at his players, who played like a sack full of loose brownstars.
Bailey didn't say anything I, as a Chief fan didn't think I was seeing....like players smiling after dropping balls......or green grinning in the 4th 1/4.
its time for Vermeil to stop cuddling his players and start kicking someone in the ass. Bailey didn't say anything in that clip that should do anything but make them look in the mirror. If Using it as BB material in December helps them "get in the mood" for Denver in December....great.
As a player, I'd have been more motivated by the "Are you crazy" crap he was talking on the field.

McNabb would be out quite a while, maybe the year with the sports hernia....
Westbrook is good but without McNabb(or with in bad health and limited mobility)
Limits Owens(with Detmer throwing the ball). I'm not sure how effective Westbrook is, when he's the keyed on player? He's very good and the Chiefs Defense has their hands full.
I have not thought that Philly has looked very good, outside of 1 game.
Its at Arrowhead, the Chiefs should play like they were embarrased(you did not see the real Chiefs monday), McNabb isn't healthy if he plays.
I feel good about the chances.

Thoughts?
I've seen the description "clearly irritated" and I've seen the description "pissed" and both seem to be way off the mark to me. I heard Vermiel make these comments twice, once in his press conference and once on his radio program. In neither case did he seem irritated at all. He called Champ a "fine kid" and said that he's "respected by everyone in the league."
The quote is wrong too. He didn't say "beat them [Broncos] by three touchdowns," he said "beat him [Bailey] for 2 touchdowns." It was clearly a dig at Bailey, but it was done without any venom. If anything, it was lighthearted ribbing, IMO. He followed it by immediately saying "we have great respect for Champ Bailey." As usual, the media has distorted this situation almost beyond recognition.

I agree. Champs comment was just a comment to a teammate. Vermin should have just blowen it off instead of crying about it. To me it's a non issue.
You are obviously someone who didn't watch the video that Crazyhorse linked. There was no crying. There was no whining. If Vermeil's comments amounted to "crying about it" then Champ's comments were coded instructions to activate an Al Qaeda sleeper cell.

Seriously. I don't see the big deal in what he said. If last December a miked KC player said, "I don't know, they're different from when we played in September. They're not playing as hard," I would not have considered it a big deal. For one thing, the statement would have been true. For another, it really was pretty tame as smack. I mean, he didn't say, "KC is playing like a bunch of pussies." Give me a break.
It wasn't a big deal. Just funny considering where he wound up.

I guess by your criteria then that Bailey played uber soft last December when Kennison was beating him like he owed him money?
It's what have you done lately that counts in this league. Leave it to the Chiefs to keep crowing about last year. You didn't even make the playoffs, or have you forgotten that part. As usual, in Denver we play for Superbowls, in KC just to beat the Broncos is all they want. That way in January they can spend all their time on the 1-900-Hulk Hogan Hotline.

He must have found a "hard" spot on that Chiefs team.

I think it was whiney. Why should a coach care what an opposing player says about his teams ability? If he wants to prove Bailey wrong, may his teams actions speak for him. I think he's too soft on his players. If I was the head coach and Sammy Parker drops a pass (again) on third down when he was wide open and then laughs about it, ...I would have tried my best not to grab him by the facemask when he got to the sideline, and then benched him for at LEAST a half. Yeah, occasions like it's Tuesday, his dog wagged his tail, the mailman went down the street, his wife turned on the TV, it was cloudy, it rained, it was sunny, the swallows arrived 2 days late, 3 different players waved to him at practice and Dante said he loves him.
Actually he cries when he's winning. It's better for you if he's not crying.
When he starts crying, that's when you know the Chiefs are legit contenders.

I'm happy to see you recognize the value now. Anytime I can be of further assitance, all you've got to do is ask. :)
