... has kind of been low key this season. I know his new position doesn't allow him to make as many plays, so I was curious if one of you X's and O's game tape guys could analyze his performance thus far in the season for me.

DJ is the strength of that linebacking corp now. Doenst take a genius to figure out he should run away from that. They've also got him and Gold way down field on passes so your seeing less of him on the run and also you've go penetrating d-linemen now instead of what we had in the past which were just fat asses who tried to Occupy blockers cause they couldnt explode by them. Then you got rotating Dends making tackles and that means less bunches of for Dj etc.

Al Wilson is the #1 LB. Then to me its up for grabs.

It's not that important to run at unless your making 17 tackles Zach Thomas makes 13-17 tackles everytime they lose. I made 13 tackles once at SS and couldn't see straight. Making tackles can be making plays or saving touchdowns.

I think that us fans can think what we want. But when you sit down in the film room as the Chiefs vs. the Denver Broncos. You look at who the biggest fastest athelete on the other team is. DJ is that guy and regardless of experience or leadership or flare, he has such range and is so hard to block you'd rather run right up the middle at AL Wilson where he's gotta come up and shed your guard (will shields) or get popped by Tony Richardson your full back.

Now if youre running to the outside at DJ you've got a big, heavy, tall, fast linebacker to block. Now I'm not saying Al is small but he is undersized a bit.

I don't think coaches care about how big a guys name is or how many probowls he's been to, they look at the film, especialy from last season and they see DJ outperforming AL Wilson on plenty of downs.

I don't think there is a linebacker harder to block in the NFL than DJ williams he's just too big and fast. Also now you gotta pull your second team tackle over to block him because TR is prolly too small to take out DJ to spring the run.

Al and DJ are both ridiculous. We're blessed.

I can see DJ becoming the best Broncos LB ever though.

If I'm an OC, I'm running at Gold instead of DJ. That's going to allow Gold to showcase his abilities, which he's doing nicely. Think of DJ like Pryce. The OC is going to do all he can to take him out of the game, freeing up others to make plays. Other players might end up with more sacks than Pryce, and better overall numbers, but we all know who makes that D line work.

You could also look at Deion Sanders. He put the CB on the other side of the field in the Pro Bowl. Hell, he put Merton Hanks in the Pro Bowl because nobody would throw to Deion's side.

If DJ isn't seeing much action coming his way, that's a good thing.

Actually it wasn't b/c they were fat asses that COULDN'T get to the QB. It was a scheme that required them to play the run and react to the pass. Until recently our line has been asked to occupy the OL so that the LB's can make plays. To Coyer's credit, the last 3 halves of football have featured him turning the DL loose to do what they can toward getting the QB. It's working and I stand by my claim that we CAN be a physical defense and impose our will on opposing offenses.

If the football gods are truly smiling down upon us we'll see more of this. I really think Coyer is changing his philosophy a little and it's working!

I saw his stat line 0-1-0. I was asking the same question. Has been low key all 3 games this year.

Being on the strong side he won't get near the numbers of Wilson or Gold. He will be low key (statistically anyway) all year.

Get used to it.

Wait, what the hell are you doing in the Chiefs' film room?

I'm being genuine when I ask the question. I don't have the time to review his performance and assess it. I can only assume that he is playing better than his stat line, but was hoping that someone that has watched the tape (Mediator?) could fill me in.

It's kind of unfortunate that DJ lost that job because he was coming into his own last season, but with Gold our LB corp is stronger overall.

say what you want about Gold but he makes plays where he is at....give DJ time to adjust and you will see a difference...

This isn't a dis-gold deal. I am fine with it. It's just that we had a pretty good WLB last year in DJ. I am curious to know how DJ is adapting to his new position and if we are not seeing much about him simply as a result of that position being a non-glamourous one or if he is playing poorly.

We play so much nickel these days, DJ was hardly on the field last night.

we've been winning at the line of scrimmage. All our linebacker's numbers have been low and its because our D-line's numbers have been up. When you look at what the D line has been doing (Forcing O-linemen into the running backs and quarterbacks, tackling behind the line, collapsing the pocket) it creates more plays at the line of scrimmage rather than past it. This forces them to play dink and dunk and so the only other guys that get tackles are the corners. It's actually a good thing.

That was my question in Gold. We're playing a 4-2lb-3safty-2corner nickle with DJ on the bench? Not to diss Gold, but more a question for shanny and cap allocation.

I think everybody in this forum wanted to see D.J. take the next step in his development this season and have a monster individual season on his way to the Pro Bowl and other future honors. It hurts to see D.J. left out on passing downs after he was the best player on the team last season.

We should forget about individual honors this season. If Denver doesn't have one player make it to the Pro Bowl, but the defense sustains this level of play for the rest of the season, I will be a happy camper.

Until recently our line has been asked to occupy the OL so that the LB's can make plays. To Coyer's credit, the last 3 halves of football have featured him turning the DL loose to do what they can toward getting the QB.

Look, if the D-line could've penetrated last year they would've. There was a reason we went out and got 1-gap penetrating tackles last season and failed miserably because the talent just wasnt there. I'll admit we used to favor the 2-gap run stuffers but every since chester left denver's been trying to change its defensive scheme. Denver is no longer that same 1-dimensional linebacker favoring team anymore true, but they've been aiming to do this for a while, not just "recently".

they tried last season but it didn't work, Ellis Johnson just didnt get hte penetration they hoped and the rotating D-line did not have enough pressure so they switched back to occupying the blockers. Coyer's not doing much more different from last year, he jus thas more talent in the front seven now. More important than anything, the return of pryce and Gerard Warren's stellar play.
