Fvck yeah!

Rod Smith was a ball carrier, so according the rule, it's a legal hit.
just ask John Lynch

Because if i remember it right, rod got hit and then as he was going down he got popped by some linebacker or lineman. Not sure??? Can someone clarify it?

Kennedy and Lynch hit "defenseless recievers"

sigh. It was legal. Rod was a ball carrier. Once he gains possession and makes a football move he no longer carries the defenseless receiver tag. It really wasn't that bad. Rod just took the brunt of the collision. It happens.

It was Sammy Knight, and I'll be surpised if he doesn't get a letter from the league before Wednesday...™

Wrong application. ONLY defenseless receivers get that protection. Smith was a ball carrier at that point and the hit was legal.
Dante Hall sure did DUCK when he saw Lynch coming tonight though, little pussy!

Ok thats all I wanted to know, I wasnt familiar with the rules because they change it every frucking year to help the Colts.

Does the fact that he was not a "defenseless receiver" make the helmet-to-helmet rule moot?

The announcers were saying helmet to helmet but it looked clean to me. Looked like he hit Rod with forearm and shoulder pads.

To the refs yes. If not, RBs would draw a penalty every down. To the league office, hard to say. Knight might get fined for it. We'll see. The front office likes to fine for hits similar.

He wasnt defensless. It's legal, He put his head down and go the first when he could have walked out of bounds 2 yards short.

It would be stupid if they fined him. I wouldn't be surprised, but it would still be stupid. It's football.

I just didnt know the rules regarding helmet to helmet. I dont like it when any player whether it is Rod Smith or not sit there and lay motionless for a couple seconds. Just not cool but Rod was trying to get the first down if i remember correctly....

They can't call illegal just because a guy got roughed up a bit. I was pissed that Knight and Johnson looked down at a motionless Rod and gave victory fist pumps, you don't celebrate hurting a guy.

The dude was down for maybe a second when they did that...they didn't notice he was "down down" till they walked away.
This is a reach.

I thought that was the case maybe, but come on, watch that hit, he goes instantly limp. Are you telling me that the guy standing there looking down at him in that position doesn't realize a guy is hurt? Plus if you watch the replay Johnson specifically looks down at Rod for a second before he celebrates. I wasn't pissed until I saw the replay.

I just didnt know the rules regarding helmet to helmet.
Rule change: 1996
"Hits with the helmet or to the head by the defender will be flagged as personal fouls and subject to fines. This is being done to protect the offense, particularly the quarterback."
http://www.steelersfever.com/nfl_history_of_rules.html
"When a ball is in player possession, the tackler can legally hit helmet-to-helmet. It becomes a foul when an unprotected receiver misses the ball and is subsequently hit, helmet-to-helmet. In the play that you refer to, the pass was caught and then the hit came, possibly helmet-to-helmet, which was perfectly legal." - NFL referee Jerry Markbreit

Yep.
Even if it wasn't illegal, it sure was classless - but that's the chokes for you.

Regretfully, you expressed a lot of frustration without providing a satisfactory explanation that would benefit our fellow board members. The following link provides a helpful summary:
http://www.ccchronicle.com/back/2002_fall/2002-12-09/sports4.html
Quarterback in the act of throwing.
Quarterback on change of possession (fumble/interception).
Wide receiver in the act of catching.
Running back who is in the grasp of a defender and has lost his forward momentum or has stopped.
Punt returner in the act of catching.
Player who is down (spearing).
