View Full Version : ESPN Debate about Favre

It got a little crazy on Gameday. TJ and Steve Young shouted down Michael Irvin about Favre and his diminishing ability. Young was hypersensitive, TJ defensive. I don't get it...all previous great QBs took small 'shots' from this crew, why not Favre? Okay, with Young it might be a qb thing. After all, he left the field konked out after throwing picks against Atlanta. But TJ? Why the obssessing over #4? Irvin is a goof and knucklehead, but on this I agree with him. Favre can't take the load now. Last year Irvin said this (and was shouted down then, too). He even disputes current arm strength, saying those forced passes he once got away with don't work and are intercepted. Young and TJ yelled him down again, saying the team isn't any good. Irvin countered saying Favre had lifted poor teams before (TJ chimed in with, "Not this bad!")

THe point is, GB has a lot of rookies. The fact that they let go two guards, drafted a qb and are playing rookies tells me they no longer have faith that Favre can get the job done, or they'd have brought in free agents instead. Its about the organization, not Favre, despite what all the lovefests say.

The guys been talking retirement for THREE FREAKING YEARS. The drama queen bit is old, and I don't blame the pack for moving on. They're actually smart...not waiting for the 'Post Favre crash' but preparing now so they can stay competitve after he retires.

For all the good it does him, Irvin is right here. He told everyone to stop kidding themselves (got shouted down a third time) Berman sat watching like a ringmaster. Irvin finally gave up since Young wouldn't let him talk. :boxing:

Irvin just smacked Ditka around!!! Ditka said Chad Johnson was the best reciever in the game today and Irivin said no because Chad Johnson plays soft Defenses. Ditka replied with" Is that TO's championship ring on your hand there?" Irvin replies " Coach I only wear Super Bowl rings you should know that." Just classic smack from Mike Irvin. Anyone else catch that? rofl

Favre is the most overrated player in the history of the game. If he played for the Seattle Seahawks instead of the most storied franchise in the history of the game, he would be a another wild QB who makes too many mistakes.

And did you see that stunt he pulled on Aaron Rodgers during the preaseason? He started a drive and went down with an ankle injury so Rodgers comes in the game. Rodgers marches the team down the field to about the opponents six yard line and Favre comes back in the game to throw the TD pass. He then goes back to the bench and takes of his shoe and ices his ankle for the rest of the game. The guy is fake as hell.

He is the same guy that said, "there is nothing in my contract that says that I have to mentor Aaron Rodgers." Could you imagine the Hell Randy Moss would have taken if he said something like that about a first rounder rookie wide receiver on his team?

Irvin wouldn't shut the hell up. He kept interrupting Young. Young's point is that the Packers are not giving Favre the players he needs to win now.

Irvin's point is that Favre is not able to carry this team due to diminished skills.

Both are correct.

1. Favre is not the QB he was three to five years ago.

2. The team around him is not very good.

Young seems to think that if Favre had more veteran talent around him, he could lead this team to another SB. Irvin seems to think that Favre is finished, regardless of the talent around him.

TJ was kinda sitting back and not getting as involved in the discussion as Irving and Young. However, he also thinks the Packers are not giving Favre the talent he needs to win now.

My feeling is Favre should retire. He's trying to go out with a bang, but instead, he's going out with a thud. He needs to call it a career and move on.

Both sides of the argument are correct.

When Favre makes some typical boneheaded plays on Monday Night Football next week, how many times will we have to hear say Madden say, "Oh, that's just Brett Favre being Brett Favre." Or another favorite, "That's Brett Favre having fun out there." I think Madden has a man crush on him.

Time to hang em up old man.

One of the false statements of all time is John's win total. Okay, 148...but why does the media keep dropping out PLAYOFF wins? (14-7 i think) They are ALL wins. I think this is done to make other qbs (like Marino) look better at 147 regular season wins (which took him an extra year to accumulate, by the way). His playoff record is 8-10, I believe. I seriously doubt Favre will add to his playoff totals on the winning side (whats his overall record there, by the way? Golic ripped him one about this, but I don't remember the number).

I think the total is something like 163 for John. Get it right, people.

I watched part of the GB game sunday. He got absolutely hammered on a sack and staggered off. It was beautiful.

Wow, you guys are haters. To me Farve goes down as a top 5 QB of all time.
Right now, I think his team sucks, and Walker going down was huge. Brett looks alright to me, I watched the game sunday too, and I feel bad for him, but at least he is still trying to go out like a champ.

I liked Brett Farve, emphasis on the past tense. He has annoyed me more and more as the last few years have gone by. The Strahan crap, the Retiring crap, calling out Walker, his attitude towards arron Rodgers. Plus he gets too much praise for a guy who is constantly careless with the ball. I've seen just as many lame duck throws from Farve the last few years as I have from Plummer.

If Favre throws a few picks on Mon it will be the thumb excuse.

Media on Favre:

After tossing a 4th quarter back breaking INT which kills all hope for his team to win:
Commentator: "Oh, Favre was trying too hard to make something happen for his team. That's Favre, he'll fight you 'til the end. He's a warrior."

Media on any other QB:
After tossing a 4th quarter back breaking INT which kills all hope for his team to win:
Commentator: "What a stupid mistake! Why would he try to complete that pass? His man was triple covered! All he is doing is hurting his team by making those passes."

It is getting rather old that the world gives Favre a free pass for life on his poor play.
