2005 Power Rankings: Week 3
RK (LW) TEAM REC COMMENT
1 (2) Colts 2-0-0 It has to be a huge boost to the Colts to know they can win a game when Peyton Manning only throws for only 122 yards.
2 (3) Steelers 2-0-0 So, Ben Roethlisberger is going to struggle in his second year, huh? Well, a 153.6 passer rating after two games sure doesn't look like a struggle.
3 (5) Eagles 1-1-0 One big game and everything is all smiles and high-fives again between McNabb and Owens in Philly.
4 (1) Patriots 1-1-0 Just a sloppy game from the Patriots. Lots of penalties, poor special teams play, etc. -- not what you'd expect from the defending champs.
5 (6) Chiefs 2-0-0 Two weeks into the season, they've failed to reach the 30-point mark ... and yet they're undefeated.
6 (4) Falcons 1-1-0 Matt Schaub might have potential, but it goes without saying that the Falcons need Michael Vick healthy and in the lineup.
7 (12) Bengals 2-0-0 After starting 1-4 in each of Marvin Lewis' first two seasons in Cincinnati, getting off to a fast start this year is huge.
8 (14) Panthers 1-1-0 Panthers looked like they had a little chip on their shoulders Sunday and it worked, resulting in a big win over the Patriots.
9 (7) Jaguars 1-1-0 Getting out of bed Monday morning couldn't have been any fun at all for Byron Leftwich.
10 (19) Buccaneers 2-0-0 Looks like Jon Gruden has found the right running back for his offense.
11 (17) Giants 2-0-0 Anyone who got Tiki Barber in their fantasy draft after 10 or 12 other RBs had already been picked got a steal.
12 (18) Jets 1-1-0 Chad Pennington still doesn't look right, but the Jets still pulled out a needed win, and that's what is really important.
13 (9) Bills 1-1-0 It'll be interesting to see how the QB situation unfolds in Buffalo. J.P. Losman is the QB of the future, but will they switch to Kelly Holcomb if he gives them a better chance to win now?
14 (20) Broncos 1-1-0 Figures that if any team could get something out of Ron Dayne it would be the Broncos.
15 (22) Seahawks 1-1-0 Seahawks are clearly a better team when Shaun Alexander is the focal point of the offense.
16 (26) Redskins 2-0-0 So, apparently there was a pretty good reason the Redskins wanted to trade for Santana Moss.
17 (8) Cowboys 1-1-0 Cowboys players and coaches must feel like they got punched in the gut.
18 (10) Saints 1-1-0 The Giants were just the better team, but the Saints understandably looked worn down Monday night.
19 (11) Chargers 0-2-0 He's still finding the end zone, but the Chargers need to get LaDainian Tomlinson (124 yards rushing, just 3.3 yards per carry, and no receptions) going at full speed.
20 (21) Rams 1-1-0 It wasn't pretty, but any win on the road is a big deal for the Rams.
21 (31) Bears 1-1-0 The Bears clearly have the best defense in the NFC North, which could be enough to get them to playoffs.
22 (30) Titans 1-1-0 Talk about a dominating D. The Titans held Baltimore to 182 total yards and no first downs in the opening half.
23 (23) Dolphins 1-1-0 The Dolphins aren't going to contend for a playoff spot, but they're clearly going to be more competitive than a lot of people thought.
24 (16) Lions 1-1-0 Jeff Garcia's hurt, but that hasn't stopped some Lions fans from calling for Joey Harrington's backup. Only problem is that backup is rookie Dan Orlovsky.
25 (15) Ravens 0-2-0 The Ravens aren't going to win many games when Jamal Lewis rushes for nine yards on 10 carries.
26 (24) Raiders 0-2-0 OK, so Moss was robbed of a TD, but they had numerous opportunities to win in Randy's home debut.
27 (13) Vikings 0-2-0 Obviously he misses Randy Moss, but that can't completely explain a QB of Daunte Culpepper's caliber throwing eight INTs in two games.
28 (32) Browns 1-1-0 The allure has worn off of road teams winning at Lambeau Field, but still an impressive first win for Romeo.
29 (27) Cardinals 0-2-0 Two winnable games have resulted in two losses. Not the start Dennis Green anticipated.
30 (25) Packers 0-2-0 With upcoming games vs. Tampa Bay, at Carolina, and vs. New Orleans, the Packers could put themselves in a hole that they can't dig out of.
31 (28) 49ers 0-2-0 Probably had no impact on Terrell Owens' play, but maybe Derrick Smith should just keep his mouth shut next time.
32 (29) Texans 0-2-0 They've already fired the offensive coordinator. Now the heat is all on the coach (Dom Capers) and the QB (David Carr).

How about them Ravens that the whole ESPN gang was sucking up to in the offseason? I was so sick of hearing how great their offseason was when they failed to address their number one need: a quarterback. It appears now that Lewis maybe washed up as well.

It's still too early. IMO the Broncos are too high (fortunate to have won Sunday), the Steelers are too high (who have they played?), the Chargers are too low (tough schedule), Indy is too high (there O is not their strength?), and the Chiefs might be too high (opponents looks soft)? I could make a case for just about any team being too high or too low. There just hasn't been enough football to know yet.

no one fears the passing game of the Ravens, so they just stack up against Jamal Lewis. It's the same way Denver was defended in 1999 after John left.
Got the Bengals right though, even if they are beating weaker teams, they are beating them Handily.

Their O is plenty potent. They have been playing keep away with the ball which is why they don't need to score 30. I'm with you, I think they'll take 200 yards rushing and 35 minutes TOP every game. It's easy to play good D when your O keeps the ball the way they have. Playing both LJ and Priest might be a brilliant strategy.
That's why I'm not sold on their D just yet. It hasn't had to win a game for them and it will have to eventually to get by teams like Pittsburgh, New England, and maybe Indy.

Did you watch the game on Monday. The defense held the Raiders offense at the end to win that game. They had the time on the clock and the ability to drive. Last year's defense loses that game. Hicks made a nice play deflecting a screen pass on 3rd down and then on 4th down Knight and I believe Surtain defending a ball in the endzone to seal the victory.
I am not sure how this doesn't equal the defense winning a game.
It was thier job to keep Oakland out of the endzone at the end of that game. If they had failed the Chiefs would be 1-1

Because they played at Denver. Dallas, depsite their hiccup, looks like a much improved team. Denver is always good at home. And, San Diego didn't play particularly poorly in either game, they just didn't make the plays to win. They are capable of beating (IMO):
11 (17) Giants 2-0-0
12 (18) Jets 1-1-0
13 (9) Bills 1-1-0
14 (20) Broncos 1-1-0
15 (22) Seahawks 1-1-0
16 (26) Redskins 2-0-0
18 (10) Saints
But as I said, its too early to know for sure. That's just what I think based on their schedule and the flow of the given games.

Isn't that part of it though?
Not really. The stats against us are sort of bloated because Penny was playing catch up all game, and we adjusted the defense a little bit because we had such a cushion.
The only thing that matters now is putting pressure on Plummer, not giving up big plays, and stopping the run. We do that and we win. No reason to dwell on the past two games. You won, now it's time to move on.

I did watch the game. My point is that its easier to play good Defense (especially at the end of the game) when your offense holds the ball for 35 minutes (34:34). First of all, it keeps your defenders fresh. Secondly, it keeps the opposing offense from gaining any rhythm.
I'm not dissing on your D per se. The Chiefs have a good balance of O and D going right now and that's a good thing for Chiefs fans. I am just saying that when a team like Pittsburgh stops your run and starts pounding the ball at you 40 times a game, can you hold up? I'm not sure and we just don't have any evidence to know one way or the other yet.

And you last won in Denver? If the defense plays as well as they did against SD this is going to be an Epic game. I like the fact that if Denver Wins they sit in sole possession of the AFCW due to the head to head tie breaker personally. That just might make the MIA debacle a little less painful. :charge:

I think the coaches have to adjust. They are coaching into this trap if you ask me. I don't think they believe Jake (and perhaps the receivers) are capable of coming out throwing and beating a team. So instead they are very methodical and keep trying the same things. It's not a bad approach if our D can play as well as they did against SD.

The trouble is that the Chiefs now have their home games in pocket. We gotta do some damage in the middle portion of the season because we have two December road games in AFC West. And a road game at Buffalo. At least Baltimore is looking more and more beatable.

That may be an exaggeragation, but they'll have all the cards. They play all their AFC West games on the road before they play any at home. Every AFC West team has to play there in November/December -- the main conteners San Diego and Denver both in December. If they can get through this early stretch then they'll be tough to catch.

Seriously though, we'll see how each team comes out. KC hasn't played a team with the ability to run all over an opponent like Denver can, but if Denver's D keeps being hot and cold, or if Plummer does his best Pennington impression and try giving the game away, it won't work out so well.

As for Denver's ability to run all over an opponent, it's not 2004 anymore and you guys haven't been running over much so far.
I do think your running game may be the key though. If you don't figure it out, KC will be able to tee off on Plummer and we all know what that means. KC always is able to score on Denver to a certain extent, so I don't see it as coming to a battle between our offense and your defense.

The Jets won more play-off games than Denver last year. Maybe they are mediocre, but coming into the season, that certainly didn't look like an easy game. Oakland isn't that good IMO, but they are better than last year and division games are rarely easy, especially on the road.

Going off what we have to go off, it is the toughest 4 game stretch we have on our schedule. My guess is as the season progresses, we may find out that it wasn't the toughest.
The Jets won more play-off games than Denver last year. Maybe they are mediocre, but coming into the season, that certainly didn't look like an easy game. Oakland isn't that good IMO, but they are better than last year and division games are rarely easy, especially on the road.
Now we go to Denver and play Philly at home. If you see a tougher 4 game stretch on KC's schedule, let me know what you think it is.
Hell, I think Denver first four games are just as hard as KC's. AT MIAMI in the heat. Next, the Broncos played a very good SD team. Now the Broncos play the all mighty chefs zowie! (we all know how great they are, right, wink, wink). Then the Broncos go back to Florida to play a very respectable Jagz. Team.
Pretty tough schedule too.

Clockwork called you spinderella for that one, it's holding true.In defense of ding-dong...
When you're looking at your schedule making predictions on what games will be tough, you can only go off of the way you've seen the team play in the past. When it's the first few weeks of the season, that means looking at last year as a barometer.
We very well could come to find out that this isn't that tough of a stretch, as the season plays out. There are bound to be some teams that are better than we gave them credit for, just like there will be teams that have fallen off since last year. But coming into the season, this looked to be a tough run.

I think Denver takes this one, but sadly, I don't think we are able to gauge the team. SD and KC have a tough time winning in Denver, so a win for us would not tell us much. Even if the D does well, KC O has been playing average, so it serves as no indicator (just like SDs O in Denver cannot give us any insight into our D). The above being said, it would be nice to see all three sides of the team play well for 4 Qts for a change (that could be something to build on).

Hey, wabbit, how did the media grilling session go today? Did you pepper the rat with reminders of last year's blowout?
I'll be out there tomorrow.
Listen, 'Bob...seems as though you're getting a little close to all this.
When you're not posting here, you're over on that cess pool fielding hand grenades from entire throngs of people who can't stand you...& I suspect you're on several others as well.
You gotta get out of the basement, son...daddy can feed you all the stats in the world, but that doesn't help with the social situation.
...ever held the hand of a girl, 'Bob?? They are soft & understanding people...in large part they don't give a damn if Quentin Griffin smoked your sorry ass last year, & I'd bet a vast majority have never calculated a QB rating...just a guess there.
Get a life, boy...there's sunshine & grandchildren for dad...just waiting.

No, it has nothing to do with giving props to KC...it has to do with people that talk football. There are not that many left around here. I am really suprised you are not frustrated that this great place seems to be filling up with more Bronx's than Pezman's. It seems obvious to me.
I don't see what you're talking about. I went back and looked at this very carefully. If you re-read it, its basically all the chiefs posters making fun of the Broncos and the bronco posters responding with real analysis. Sure we throw some mud too, but most of the thread the Chiefs fans are the ones throwing the crap around. Here are the primary contributing posters:
Bloodsunday - Who is a great poster, even though I think he nit-picks things whether they are directly relevant to the team or not.
2kback - Who had an excellent take on the Ravens.
Ludo21- Contributes to the forum quite well.
cmh6476 - Who appears to have joined to talk smack.
You - So-so analysis. i really stopped taking you seriously when you said our team looked "sorry" this year.
BMF Bronco - A take about the Steelers being a good team, which is true. He only smacks when Naptown comes in and throws his talk around.
Garcia Bronco - An old timer that has some great takes. He's not new.
NaptownChief - A well thought out smack post that cleverly uses "pile High" and "smack down" in the same sentence.
Meck77 - One of my favorite people let alone poster. Great take on needing to establish the pass to open up the run.
Mediator12 - Who knows his football, the broncos and responds to Naptown's "brilliant" prediction with sound analysis.
FADERPROOF - Who has some nice takes and makes fun of me for liking the number 14.
Drek - great poster who throws a little smack but then seriouses down for a real take.
Tombstone RJ - Who has a nice avatar and predicts that the Chiefs will be 2-2 at the bye.
RedDread - Who likes to insult posters and the board in general
dlow187 - Was doing ok until he got personal.
jspchief - Who predicts that Denver is going to play hard.
Hercules Rockefeller - Small blurps that generally agree with the Chiefs.
Bob - Who frequently uses flawed lagic, continues that streak.
ozomulsion - Well, just read his avatar line.
Merlin - Who makes a prediction
Sorry but this great slide toward meanness and drivel has come mostly from your teams' posters- at least in this thread anyway.

Bob - Who frequently uses flawed lagic, continues that streak.
The Chiefs run defense has been great.
Meanwhile the Broncos rushing offense has sucked.
So, I predict the Chiefs will shut down Denver's running game.
And a bunch of Bronco fans predict Denver will "RUN WILD. LOL IT'S DA CHIEFS!" they say.
Who's logic is flawed again?

Martin's still the defending NFL rushing champion. How many 1,000 yard seasons in a row? Somehow I doubt he lost that ability in one offseason.
I didn't hear any Bronco fans saying "well you know, KC will probably shut down Martin in week one, because he's so overrated."
All I heard were Bronco fans saying "Martin will gash you for at least 150, you are going to lose."
Now suddenly Martin sucks. Right. The Chiefs defense COULDN'T be getting better!
Well, he has to start a downhill slide at some point. I'm willing to bet it's this year. The Boy has alot of carries and alot of years under his belt. I don't know what's going on with his O-line but something isn't clicking. If he would've had 20 carries for 110 yards this week, you would so have a point. He didn't and you don't.

No, I never said that. But I certainly think the Jets are. The Jets defeated them last year in the playoffs, and again, the Jets have a superior record this year.
What evidence do YOU have that San Diego is better than the Jets?

I look at their team and the talent and they are a good team. They went 12-4 last year which is more than either of our teams could do. Their offense has the best back in the NFL, the second best tight end, a great Quarterback and a great veteran receiver. They're also very young and have speed. They have a solid defense and good special teams. They're a good team. The Jets have a Qb with wounded arm, and aging running back and receivers that are "ok". That I even took time to answer you is ridiculous.

No, what's ridiculous is that you think San Diego is better than New York. Neither team really added much to their roster in the offseason other than draft choices.
The Jets defeated San Diego in the playoffs. The Jets currently have a better record than San Diego.

Philadelphia.
Thats a tough 4 game stretch. The toughest of our schedule. Can you find a harder section? We can't all sit around with NFL powerhouses like the Dolphins. rofl

How about them Ravens that the whole ESPN gang was sucking up to in the offseason? I was so sick of hearing how great their offseason was when they failed to address their number one need: a quarterback. It appears now that Lewis maybe washed up as well.
I thought the Ravens whole season depended on Boller but hell, they can't even run the ball. They are a mess and it won't get any better when Boller gets back.

Its generally the team that has started off rough that talks about how you can't tell much from two games in the NFL. Nothing is abslute and crazy things happen in the NFL. Teams ascend...teams hit rough streaks. But you can get a pretty good damn sense of where a team is headed after the preseason and two games.
