THE BREAKDOWN vs. San Diego Chargers (September 18, 2005)

STATS / ANALYSIS

All Stats Shown SD/DEN

Total Net Yards 213 / 331
This stat just shows a lack of ability by the Denver offense to capitalize on momentum, field position, and red zone opportunities. Many a time in this game, Denver hit a nice rhythm, only to be turned back by a Mike Anderson fumble or a Jason Elam missed field goal. This stat shows that total yards do not matter very much, as the success is dependent on a team's red zone offense, special teams, and 3rd down conversion play; Denver had beat out SD by 100+ yards to win by 3 points.

Total Plays 51 / 66
This is mostly attributed to the fact that the Broncos kept possession of the ball for a long time; but in the end we only won by 3 points a a result of our careless offensive play (in some instances). You can take 100 plays and plow for 1000 net yards, but not getting past the goal line gets you jack squat.

Average Gain 4.2 / 5.0
No analysis.

Net Yards Rushing 79 / 98
:egbgb: We actually beat LT and CO.. Important stat because we held LT to almost negative yards in the second half. Average production by the Bronco running staff in this game.

Rushes 24 / 26
Very average, considering SD has LT and Denver is known for running.

Avg. Per Rush 3.3 / 3.8
No big carries.

Net Yards Passing 134 / 233
At least Jake Plummer can still pass. After a weak showing in week one (unless you attribute the demise to the receiver's drops), Jake "The Snake" came back out and proved himself to everyone that he can still pass, and that he can still turn the ball over, and that despite a good passing game, there is still a possibility that we can use. Not many bootlegs, although we did see some, and no humongous hail mary's to boost up this stat. I'd say it was a pretty average game, wouldn't you? (although I would give back the inteceptions for some points on my fantasy team :P)

Comp.-Att. 15-23 / 23-37
As I calculate, Drew Brees completed approx. 65 % of his passes, vs. Plummer's 62%. Both QB's had very professional performances this week, as you can see from the above 50% mark for both passers. It is very important for Denver to get its passing game established as that softens up the run defense for Ron Dayne and Mike Anderson to shine.

Yards Per Pass 5.0 / 5.8
No analysis.

Sacked-Yards Lost 4-41 / 3-15
This is where things got interesting in the fourth quarter. A humongous, near-safety sack by ProBowler John Lynch, another one earlier by D. Veal, and we were in business. Momentum was shifting, and the Broncos Defense showed up as advertised. Clearly the defense was the fuel of the game. Although, I didn't see a very stable/consistent pass rush the entire game.

Had Intercepted 1 / 1
Jake Plummer off someone's helmet. Champ Bailey pwns Drew Brees. Need I say more?

Touchdowns 2 / 2
Scoring summary: Tomlinson's record-breaking TD (16 yds), Tomlinson up the middle (4 yds), Champ Bailey pick-off return (25 yds) Kyle Johnson's bust-in (3 yds)

Rushing 2 / 1
No analysis.

Passing 0 / 0
An awfully dry day for the air. I mean, my friend beat me Plummer 30 vs. Brett Favre 60 fantasy points. Golly gee whillikers. (sp?)

Other 0 / 1
Question: Is Champ Bailey healthy again?

Extra Points 2-2 / 2-2
No analysis.

Field Goals 1-1 / 2-4
We all wanted to kill Jason after the 2 missed ones from 56, but the moral of the story, as put on Denverbroncos.com, is: "When things don't go right, you still find a way to win." -Shanahan

Red Zone Efficiency 2-2-100% / 1-3-33%
Hee hee. Read above.

Goal To Go Efficiency 1-1-100% / 1-1-100%
No analysis.

Safeties 0 / 0
No analysis.

GAME NOTES:

-San Diego TE Antonio Gates returned from his suspension and caught six passes for 80 yards.
-Denver DE Courtney Brown made his debut after missing the preseason and Week 1 with an elbow injury. He had a sack and a fumble recovery.

My analysis: Unlike one of the preseason games, this time we actually won with all the stats in our favor. I had three heart attacks, a stroke, and minor nausea. And was it just me that thought Elam's last kick was fading right?

good analysis..... Champ is hurt but his health sould improve as the season goes. Altho he may wear down quicker if the injury hurts.

Hopefully the D plays like they did in the 2nd half all game verse KC, specially if the Offense doesnt show up yet again.
