DENVER OFFENSE VS SAN DIEGO DEFENSE
1. Slide Protect, Don't Man Protect- In all levels of football, most pass protections can be categorized into one of two categories: Big on Big, or Man Protection, OR Slide, aka Turnback protection. A simple example of Big on Big/Man protection would be, against a normal 3-4 front, the Offensive Lineman would protect against the defender over him and the Backs blocking the outside linebackers. As in the case with a 3-4, the guards are unblocked so if the ILB over them doesnt come they kick out to help the backs if an OLB comes. In contrast, Slide Protection involves half of the Offensive Line "sliding" over and it involves 6 blockers instead of 7. The sole back who is assigned to block, blocks the Inside LB on the strongside to the Outside LB on thes strongside. If the ILB comes, you take him, if not you move on to the OLB. If they both come, you take the ILB and the QB is responsible in the beginning of his read to see if both come, if that happens, the QB is responsible for the 2nd blitzer by throwing a "Hot" route to a reciever. In this game, Denver will likely slide to the left side alot (All the WCO teams call the left slide protection as "2 Jet", whereas sliding to the right side is called "3 Jet") so that Tatum Bell isnt responsible for the blocking of Shawn Merriman. The Center slides to block the ILB, the RG slides to block the NT, the LG slides to block the DE and the LT, Matt Lepsis slides to block the OLB on that side. The matchup of the athletic Matt Lepsis against a blitzing Shawn Merriman is much better than that of Tatum Bell.
2. Run the Zone runs to the outside (Wide Zone), not to the inside (Tight Zone). San Diego has an excellent 3-4 NT in Jamal Williams who does a great job of bottling up the inside against the run. His stellar 2004 play was a key component in the excellent seasons of ILBs Randall Godfrey and Donnie Edwards. Denver loves the zone run game. Because of the general weakness of the interior of the Broncos line in dealing with superior 4-3 DTs and 3-4 NTs, Denver should use more of its outside zone run plays (Wide Zone) instead of its inside zone plays (Tight Zone). In addition, rookie DE Luis Castillo is set to make his first start on the outside and thus it would certainly be a great time to test him instead of their superior NT Jamal Williams.
3. Exploit the Rod Smith vs. Sammy Davis/Drayton Florence matchup- Last year, San Diego played alot of man to man with Denver. One thing stood out to me in particular. They matched their superior corner, Quentin Jammer on Ashley Lelie and matched their much more inferior corners, Sammy Davis/ Drayton Florence on Rod Smith. If San Diego preserves this matchup, Denver needs to exploit it early and often. Rod Smith is still a solid #1 caliber WR and both of these players are below average #2s.
SAN DIEGO DEFENSE VS DENVER OFFENSE
1. Blitz Merriman in particular alot- This week, rookie OLB Shawn Merriman is likely to play. While he is far behind in his development due to his summer OTA and minicamp absences, he has excellent raw ability as an outside pass rusher and great overall athleticism. DC Wade Phillips is therefore likely to make the wise decision, due to both of those reasons, to keep it simple and focus on Shawn's strengths i.e. pass rushing. Even if he doesnt start, San Diego would be wise, and Denver should expect to see, Merriman to come in specifically on down and distance situations where, based on previous film study a) Denver is likely to throw and b) the pass protection is likely to be one where HB Tatum Bell draws the blocking assignment of the OLB on his side. Bell is a below average blocker and Merriman is a great blitzer. This is a great mismatch in favor of San Diego.
2. Blitz the OLBs against the two tight end formations- Denver really likes to boot plummer out off of run fakes in the two tight end set in particular. One of the many keys against the Denver offense for any defense is to make Plummer do something he isn’t comfortable with i.e. stay in the pocket. The unique format of the 3-4 creates a situation whereby you can blitz both OLBs to shut down a rollout on on one side against the PA Pass and possibly catch the RB for a TFL on the other side when its an actual run while allowing the ILBs to defend the two TEs against the pass. This should be a check SD calls when it sees the 2 TE set at times.
3. Zones generally, not man to man. Denver has a lot of good mismatches against this defense in terms of individual matches. Smith against Davis/Florence. Lelie last year torched Jammer deep in both games. Putzier is a good matchup against Steve Foley in terms of the pass offense. Additionally, SD got torched in man situations by Dallas’s WRs last week. So San Diego needs to resort to zone defenses a little more in this game, keeping a particular eye on what route combinations are Denver’s favorites and choosing the types of zones in each situation that would force the QB to go to the receiver running the least threatening route in terms of yardage.

Now that I think about it, you are right. I am going to take out the stuff from Coach Mountjoy regarding the Alex Gibbs lecture on the specifics of the line blocking of the outside zone run game, all that stuff in CAPS from the Gibbs lecture in several paragraphs in the middle is too much. Socal, my biggest concern is lining up our tight end spot against their line and backers. It has to be more effective IMO since we really need the extra lanes cleared for the pass. It just seems like we are not getting the real good bump and run blocks in there right now. Would we be better off using a different formation which utilizes a pick-up blocker for blitzes?

I definitely think we are going to try protections and formations that dont ask Bell to do much at all in terms of protection because it takes an unnecessary risk. As far as push in the run game, I dont know what we are going to do with that. Certainly we cant go straight up the middle no them, Jamal Williams is a beast. We are going to have to run a little more towards the tackles. There wont be much on the inside I think.

Welcome to the Mane fellow SoCal'er. Good to have another one of us represent!
I like your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter ;D
Seriously, the offensive gameplan will have to be more run-intensive if we really expect to dominate them this week. One thing is for sure, our offense lines up much better this week against the SD than last week IMO...

Outside runs are a must. Jamal is a beast and i dont expect to gain much yardage up the middle cept maybe ona few draw plays.
I hope ur right SoCal tho.... I dont wanna see Bell have to take on Merriman all game. Even tho Dayne is bigger he isnt that great a blocker. Slide protection was something i also was thinking of and its a great idea against the Chargers this week. It definietly will mix some things up.

Two things better be involved in this game that were missing from last game on offense:
1. Misdirection in the running Game. It was not that they ran up the Middle every time, they actually did not, it was that they ran a Narrow POA. There were no Counters or reverses that freeze the OLB's and DE's on the back side so the Cutback lanes are Available. I mean the Fake Reverse inside Zone cutbacks produced HUGE holes in the preseason. Stop trying to beat defenses straight up, use the misdirection to keep them honest and slow the pass rush a little for God's sake.
2. Passes to the Backs and TE's early to get the safety's out of the box for Crossing and intermediate patterns. Kyle Johnson, Jeb Putzier, and Stephen Alexander were open almost every play in the first half. After the halftime adjustments, they actually tried to get them the ball more. These are the guys who will stretch the width of the field to open the gaps in the 3-4 pass defense.
The Dolphins ran the same slam 3-4 formation the WHOLE EFFIN' game. That is a base 3-4 without shifting to the Strong side keeping the gaps pure. Why you might ask??? Because they were defeating the players one on one consistently in the running game and Plummer was not exploiting the flats with the RB's and TE's who WERE open until the second half.
And two things need to be corrected on defense:
1. The Passive coverage has to stop. No more playing off the ball on third downs for the CB's. If they give up the big play, then so WHAT! Get physical at the LOS with Receivers. My Goodness this is not Basketball, you can Freakin handcheck AGGRESIVELY inside of Five yards. Hell, I have seen LB's Knock over TE's inside Five. The Cb's have to be Physical and aggresive on Blitzes.
2. Adjust the Blitzes to scheme for Max Protection. Send 6 or seven against six or seven occasionally. Attack various Zones instead of Overloads when you show Overlaod. Overload when you show multiple Zones. This actually worked four times versus Miami and resulted in an INT, Dropped INT By Ferguson, and Two incompletes on third down. Combined with # 1 this should cure a lot of the third down Problems. T

As in the case with a 3-4, the guards are unblocked so if the ILB over them doesnt come they kick out to help the backs if an OLB comes.
Thats all very cool, however I see a major flow in this blocking style, and maybe thats one of the reasons we are hurting. If the guards kick back to help the backs, then a delayed blitz up the middle kills the QB. The only way that really works is if the tackles block the guy over them towards the inside cutting off any chance of a delayed blitz from the middle linebackers. Football is so ****ing cool.
Well I dont like this at all. Its too much for our tiny brained QB. Hot routes? Are you kidding me? This is the NFL, we cant expect that out of our QBs! Seems a tad more complicated and also seems like it would work better in a run package.
Well crap. I hope they do it effectively.
In addition, rookie DE Luis Castillo is set to make his first start on the outside and thus it would certainly be a great time to test him instead of their superior NT Jamal Williams.
We have all been screaming for runs to the outside. Quit running Tatum up the gut dammit. ADJUST to the players. Id be surprised to see many outside runs, but I agree, thats what we need to do.
3. Exploit the Rod Smith vs. Sammy Davis/Drayton Florence matchup- Last year, San Diego played alot of man to man with Denver. One thing stood out to me in particular. If San Diego preserves this matchup, Denver needs to exploit it early and often. Rod Smith is still a solid #1 caliber WR and both of these players are below average #2s.
If Jammer is their superior corner, we should have a field day. Rod Smith will likely draw coverage from him if Lelie is hemmed up by Jammer and Rod Smith is running wild. Shotty isnt that stupid.
SAN DIEGO DEFENSE VS DENVER OFFENSE
1. Blitz Merriman in particular alot- This week, rookie OLB Shawn Merriman is likely to play. Behind Enemy Lines
By Cameron Healy
Date: Sep 16, 2005
A conversation with Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and quarterback Jake Plummer as they prepare for the San Diego Chargers.
On preparing for the San Diego offense
“I think we see a lot of diverse offenses in the league. They were very effective last year. they were balanced in both the running game, and the passing game and they did an exceptional job red zone.”
On the injuries of cornerback Champ Bailey and running back Mike Anderson
“I would say, on Friday, I should be able to give you an idea. They are getting treatment and we are going to look at it on Friday.”
On this game being a “must win”
“I think everybody looks at every AFC West game as a must win. If you do not look at it that way, you are not being realistic. Because I think we all understand that it is not, but if you don’t look at it that way, I think you are probably not going in the right direction in this organization, especially at home.”
On the importance of Sunday’s game against San Diego
“I think we talked about that Monday with the people (media) that were here. We just didn’t play good… We just didn’t play good collectively. You miss an assignment here, and you’re not getting the job done there, all of a sudden the momentum starts going in the other direction and you are fighting and uphill battle. Those things do happen, we just hope that they don’t happen very often. You look at it and dissect it then you move on. After Monday, you have to get ready for San Diego and that’s what our football team did. We were pretty tough on ourselves while we were looking over the film on Monday. You review it, go over it and then you get ready for San Diego. You can’t look back, you have to look forward.”
On running back Tatum Bell’s ability
“I think all of our backs are talented. I’ve got belief that if one of our backs go down, then the other guy will step in and get the job done.”
On Bell’s development as a running back
“Tatum has done a pretty good job since he has been here. It is like all running backs: Until a guy plays consistently through a season, you really don’t know. He has been injured since he has been here and when he has played, he has been productive. He averaged over five yards per carry, which is pretty good, especially as a rookie. I think he was the leading rookie in the National Football League last year, so he did some good things, especially when he missed half of the games, or close to it. The growing curve is constant and I think he will only be getting better.”
On wide receiver Ashley Lelie
“Our football team knows what kind of football club they (San Diego) are. We have the same guys that we had a year ago. (Wide receiver) Ashley (Lelie) has had some great games, and Ashley has been very consistent this year throughout the preseason and camp. He didn’t play one of his better games. He has to look at it, be tough on himself and get ready for the Chargers.”
On the feelings a team takes away from a loss
“You don’t have to use it as motivation. We work our rear ends off trying to prepare for the games and if you don’t play well, of course everyone is going to be disappointed. It is hard to get over it in a days time. Sometimes it takes a few days, but you can’t dwell on it. You can’t look back – You have to look forward. Yeah, there is some disappointment. There is not a team in the National Football League that lost that doesn’t have that bad feeling inside of them. The only thing you can do is get ready for the next week. Everybody is in the same situation.”
Jake Plummer
On what adjustments need to be made after the Miami game
“Well, we need to find a way to stay on the field. One for 12 (on third downs) isn’t going to win many games in this league. We have to find a way whatever it is to stay on the field. If we can do that, that will help out with a lot of the issues right now.”
On San Diego’s pass defense against Dallas
“They lost just like we did. Obviously, we didn’t do some things well. We did some things well. Every game has its own ebbs and flows. We have to go in there ready to set the tone to run the ball and pass the ball. Just because they did last week doesn’t mean they will this week. Last year, they struggled against the pass a little bit too. They have a very physical pass defense. They’re doing some different things. I think that with time and the game plan, we might be able to take advantage of some looks. Just because (Cowboys quarterback) Drew (Bledsoe) did it doesn’t mean we’re going to go out there and do it. It gives us the opportunity to go out there. There are definitely some plays to be made.”
On what the team does with the disappointment from the Miami game
“Obviously you let it hurt and learn from it. With 15 games left, you can’t let it linger. It’s not how we wanted to start, but if we go and beat San Diego at home then no one will really think about that game. We’ve got to win in our division.”
On what the team has been focused on this week
“There are still some things that we can do better. As 11 guys out there, there isn’t one guy on that offense that didn’t make a mistake that hurt a play or didn’t allow us to make a play. That’s me included along with everybody. It’s just taking responsibility and doing your job and playing as a group so we can get better.”
On the surprise of how poorly the team played in Miami
“I’m surprised and shocked that we’re still talking about it. We’re playing San Diego this week, and they are a division rival. You guys are talking about it amongst yourselves. We’re moving on. We have to move on. As players, you have to. I’m not going to sit here and mope and whine. We’re not going to sit here and worry about what we did down there. It’s over. It’s done. We don’t like how it happened. Now what we’re going to do is go play San Diego.”
On any concern over running back Mike Anderson’s injury
“Knowing Mike, he’s going to be back. He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever played with. I’ve had rib injuries, and they’re not fun. They’re not pleasant. As long as there is nothing that can hurt him worse and if there is pain involved, Mike is going to be out there playing. I know Mike. I know what he can do. If there is something that could possibly hurt him further or cause us to lose him for the year, then he has to be smart. As far as toughness goes, they don’t come as tough as him. If his rib will allow him to get out there, then he’ll be playing I’m sure.”
On the importance of this game
“I think that regardless of when you play your rival, it is your division rivalry and that is always a must win. Down in the end of the season, if you win your division, you have home field (advantage). It doesn’t matter what happened prior to this game. This is just a big win that we must get and they are in the same boat and they need it bad. So, we have to let what happened last week go and get ready for San Diego. They are going to be coming in here ready to play, and we are going to be ready to play also.”
