ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Champ Bailey didn't take a preseason snap and didn't go through a full week of practice until last week while he nursed a hamstring injury.
For some, such inactivity would have an effect. Bailey doesn't believe it will.
"I don't think so," the seven-year veteran said when asked whether the lack of preseason game time would hinder him. "The one thing about the NFL (is that) you've just got to make sure you're in game shape. I'll find out how good a shape I'm in when we get to Miami."
Whether he's 100 percent is a matter of conjecture or semantics, depending on one's perspective.
"I feel like I'm ready to play," Bailey said. "I don't know what 100 percent is, but yeah, I feel ready to play, if that's what you want to call 100 percent."
BELL TOLL: Over the summer months, it was hard to happen upon a magazine rack without seeing a picture of Tatum Bell; any number of fantasy-football annuals proclaimed the second-year running back as the next big thing.
It's doubtful they'd be saying the same thing for this moment. While Bell ran well in the preseason, he currently sits No. 2 on the depth chart behind Mike Anderson, who will open a season at tailback for the first time in his six-year career.
Bell isn't bothered.
"I don't mind," Bell said. "Whatever I've got to do to play."
Bell said that he also expects to play on special teams, though he demurred when asked approximately how many carries he'd receive.
"I’ve accepted my role," Bell said. "I hope to get in, and when I get in, I hope to be productive so I can get more chances."
JACKSON SITS OUT: For the second consecutive day, tight end Nate Jackson was the only Bronco to sit out practice, and his status remains questionable for Sunday.
"He's just got a little irritation in that hamstring area, and it just hasn't been able to heal," Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. "We'll just have to wait and see."
Jackson missed the bulk of the preseason with the hamstring injury, but returned to play in last Friday night's game at Arizona, making a catch across the middle for a first down during the third period.
"He got a (painkilling) shot (Wednesday)," Shanahan said. "He said it was much improved today, so that's a good sign."
If Jackson can't play, Shanahan would have no trepidations about utilizing rookie Wesley Duke, who last week made his first game-time reception since his senior year of high school.
"We wouldn't activate him if he wasn't ready," Shanahan said. "We've got five tight ends, so we've got some depth there."
BROWN UPDATE: While Jackson sat out, defensive end Courtney Brown practiced once again and remains listed as probable for Sunday's game.
"He practiced; he looks good," Shanahan said. "I've got a good feeling. He's practicing pretty well. It'll be a game-day decision, like it normally is, but he's practicing full speed. We had pads today and it didn't look like there was any setback, so that's a positive."
