ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Champ Bailey didn't take a preseason snap and didn't go through a full week of practice until last week while he nursed a hamstring injury.

For some, such inactivity would have an effect. Bailey doesn't believe it will.

"I don't think so," the seven-year veteran said when asked whether the lack of preseason game time would hinder him. "The one thing about the NFL (is that) you've just got to make sure you're in game shape. I'll find out how good a shape I'm in when we get to Miami."

Whether he's 100 percent is a matter of conjecture or semantics, depending on one's perspective.

"I feel like I'm ready to play," Bailey said. "I don't know what 100 percent is, but yeah, I feel ready to play, if that's what you want to call 100 percent."

BELL TOLL: Over the summer months, it was hard to happen upon a magazine rack without seeing a picture of Tatum Bell; any number of fantasy-football annuals proclaimed the second-year running back as the next big thing.

It's doubtful they'd be saying the same thing for this moment. While Bell ran well in the preseason, he currently sits No. 2 on the depth chart behind Mike Anderson, who will open a season at tailback for the first time in his six-year career.

Bell isn't bothered.

"I don't mind," Bell said. "Whatever I've got to do to play."

Bell said that he also expects to play on special teams, though he demurred when asked approximately how many carries he'd receive.

"I’ve accepted my role," Bell said. "I hope to get in, and when I get in, I hope to be productive so I can get more chances."

JACKSON SITS OUT: For the second consecutive day, tight end Nate Jackson was the only Bronco to sit out practice, and his status remains questionable for Sunday.

"He's just got a little irritation in that hamstring area, and it just hasn't been able to heal," Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. "We'll just have to wait and see."

Jackson missed the bulk of the preseason with the hamstring injury, but returned to play in last Friday night's game at Arizona, making a catch across the middle for a first down during the third period.

"He got a (painkilling) shot (Wednesday)," Shanahan said. "He said it was much improved today, so that's a good sign."

If Jackson can't play, Shanahan would have no trepidations about utilizing rookie Wesley Duke, who last week made his first game-time reception since his senior year of high school.

"We wouldn't activate him if he wasn't ready," Shanahan said. "We've got five tight ends, so we've got some depth there."

BROWN UPDATE: While Jackson sat out, defensive end Courtney Brown practiced once again and remains listed as probable for Sunday's game.

"He practiced; he looks good," Shanahan said. "I've got a good feeling. He's practicing pretty well. It'll be a game-day decision, like it normally is, but he's practicing full speed. We had pads today and it didn't look like there was any setback, so that's a positive."

Nate out?? Woulda thunk??

Dont matter, we got 5 of them ol TE's anyways, and there all pretty good id have to say. Altho i wouldnt wanna throw Duke in yet, he does look like a big talent, and i mean BIG.

Hopefully Brown plays, I REALLY want to see him in there. He has always been a favorite of mine since he was drafted. When hes not injured, hes a monster. Cant wait for Sunday!

I thought I heard Branch didn't play all pre-season either...didn't seem to affect him any last night....

I'm more concerned about Champ. We might need to rest him one more week and just let the little one out there.

Champs injury sure seems to be lingering. sounds like Brown is slow but steady recovering. That guy, I swear. His foot wasn't supposed to be back till about now, so here we go. We will see if he can be effective. I don't anticpate it right away at all. Hopefully we can get him some mop up duty this week.

All I heard last night was how poor Jerry Porter was out all PS with Hammy & how he was only going to be used sparringly. Too bad Mary Collins couldn't get anyone the ball under pressure in 2nd half. Didn't hear them talk about Branch much.

They did mention Branch hadn't played a down all preseason and not due to injury but as a decision to not risk injury, I guess.

What makes that odd is they basically let David Terrell go and he hadn't been able to play in pre-season due to some type of staph infection he was having a hard time shaking.

So one guy gets cut because he can't play, and one guys stays who is deliberately kept out of play.

Doesn't matter. Everything seems to work for New England.

we should be able to beat miami handily with or without bailey (knock on wood), so that being said, i think it should be a preseason game for champ.
play him, get him some reps, and get him some rest too.
use him maybe 30-40% of the snaps so he can work back in and be healthy for the two ensuing division games.

I don't like this kid's attitude much. He seems to be happy with whatever comes his way.

i like that he is humble don't need any clowns on this team or players saying the other team is soft, but i regress.

I personally think he's got the right attitude. Especially on this roster.

It's always tough watching someone regress.
