Just heard while watching CNN that the 49ers will have to release a player from their 53 man roster to allow Rice to sign so he can retire as a 9ner. The coach said he doesn't plan on doing it. Wow.
Thoughts?

Coach Nolan is an Ass. How hard would it be to cut and sign back a vet making league min. I am sure there are a few players that would love to be the answer to that trivia question.

Nah, he was good for us, did his job and respected in the end by the Raiders for honoring his request to be released to pursue other prospects.
I personally don't want the guy to be in our HOF because we don't deserve the credit for his game but if the guy is forced to pick a team, I am sure the Raiders will be more than happy to give a 1 day contract to honor the best WR to ever play the game.

I'm not siding with anyone. I'm just stating that I don't find it particularly important and figure the whole "retiring as a ________" thing is a joke when you aren't playing a down for that team.
If he wanted to retire as a 49er, he should have tried making their roster, not ours.

While Jerry does deserve to retire as a 49er, he can't be dropping this on them now. It's like 3 days before the season starts, they're getting ready for their season-opener, and they shouldn't be putting everything on hold to figure out who to cut, signing Jerry to a contract, etc.
Although at some point, be it after the season is over, or some other time when it's convenient for the team, they should let him retire a 49er.

For a cold-hearted, glass eyed, egotistical maniac, that Shanahan sure found a way to get the message across to Jerry that it was time to hang 'em up.
The "Retirement" Ceremony may be a scam but it's become a tradition. It's not just the coaches and players. I certainly enjoyed my chance to say goodbye to Atwater.
Jerry sold a lot of tickets in SF. Those people should have the opportunity of a final wave. But then hey, the fans are just the open wallet part of the NFL equation.

The bad guys in this situation is the league office... All they'd have to do is give the 49ers a temporary roster limit of 54 and allow the 49ers to bring Rice in and retire. It would be no big deal and no other team would complain... I don't blame Nolan at all...

I agree with your take, but Jerry Rice shouldn't have retired 5 years ago. At age 40, Rice had a 1000 yard season which earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl.

That... or instead of costing a Broncos "bubble" player his roster spot, couldn't Jerry have privately talked with Shanny... and the 9ers... before the final cuts had to be made? Shanny would have released him so that he could sign a one-day contract with the 9ers... and they might have been more willing to accommodate him if he hadn't waited until just days remained before meaningful games started...
But then, that move wouldn't have served to keep the media talking about Jerry Rice, would it?

Considering the Broncos signed David Terrell with that slot it doesn't seem like it cost anyone on the "bubble".

You're probably right, Tre... but at the time the final cuts were made, that wasn't a certainty. If we'd kept a "bubble" player instead of Rice, that player might still have been released to make way for Terrell. Who knows?
At any rate, this whole "retirement as a 9er" thing seems ludicrous to me after he already had his tearful farewell speech. Does he really need to make two?

As I posted before, I think it does have something to do with the fans in San Francisco. I have never forgiven Dan Reeves for the way he unceremoniously dumped greats like Louie Wright and Rubin Carter. I immensely enjoyed the opportunity to cheer one more time for Steve Atwater and say thanks and goodbye.
Had he been a Bronco all those seasons on the way to becoming the greatest receiver the NFL has ever seen, I know I would like the opportunity to express my appreciation.

Yeah, I understand that... and I'm sure the 9ers fans would have liked him to retire as a 9er. But he chose to announce his retirement while on the Broncos' roster. As noted, he already gave his emotional farewell speech.
At this point in time, the 9ers need to focus on Sunday's game and not kissing the derriere of a former 9er great, Jerry's ego notwithstanding. And Jerry should know better than to be distracting his old team from "job one" (trying to win football games).

Broncos Regret Signing Loser Jerry Rice
DENVER--After a preseason that was described as “pathetic” and “extremely disappointing,” Jerry Rice finally retired Monday, much to the delight of the Denver Broncos, who regret signing the loser in the first place.
Just minutes after Rice made the announcement, Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan ripped him in a press conference.
“Ugh, am I glad that’s over,” Shanahan said. “In all my years as a coach, I have never seen a player so hapless, slow, and inept as Jerry Rice. We signed the guy thinking, ‘Hey, he’s one of the best receivers all time. Maybe he can help us out.’ Boy were we wrong. The guy couldn’t get out of his own way. Now I hear San Francisco might sign him to a one-day contract. Oh man, I can’t wait to see that. That’s going to be the longest day of their lives.”
What disappointed Shanahan most was the negative effect Rice had on the team’s younger players.
“Jesus I though this guy might be a good example for the young guys, but he was horrible. He couldn’t do the simplest thing. Jerry, run a deep route. Nope, too slow. Can’t do that. OK, here do a slant. Nope, sorry can’t outrun a linebacker. How about throwing a block? Ha, yea right. That’s not happening. So in essence what he taught our young players was to suck at everything then be a quitter. Thanks, Jerry!”
Rice joined the Broncos with the hope of being the team’s third receiver, but he couldn’t even achieve that modest goal. Shanahan called him Saturday night to inform him that he would be the fourth option at receiver and said Rice was lucky to even be on the roster.
“I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to telling him to piss off,” said Shanahan. “I’d been waiting a long time to give him a piece of my mind. So when he came in, I told him ‘Rice, you’re a bum. You’re horrible. You’ve been an albatross since the day you walked into camp. Get out of my sight, and don’t come back.’ Of course, even after I said that he was very gracious and professional. What a pussy”
Some of the team’s younger receivers also expressed relief that Rice was gone. They echoed their coach’s assertion that Rice provided no leadership and was essentially taking up space for no discernible reason.
“My few weeks with Jerry Rice were some of the most disappointing weeks of my life,” said Ashley Lelie, who is considered the Broncos receiver of the future. “I thought I might learn something. I thought he might set an example. Instead, he got outplayed by practice squad guys. It was sad, really. He was almost as bad as that pussy who played in Oakland last year. What was his name? Oh, yea, Tim Brown.”
Lelie recalls trying to help Rice and be a mentor to him, but Rice had no interest in being coached in the finer points of the game.
“I tried to help the guy. I took him under my wing, I gave him a few pointers, I really tried to impart some of my knowledge to him. But he was uncoachable. He kept trying to teach me stuff. Imagine that? A fourth string receiver trying to teach me something? Talk about a slap in the face. I just hope he gets his comeuppance some day.”
Rice will now be forced to spend his retirement wondering what went wrong in Denver. His brief tenure with the team was an unmitigated catastrophe that left his sterling reputation in tatters. With his career over, Rice retires with his head down.
Still, he managed to maintain a positive attitude.
“Hey, look, things just didn’t work out for me in Denver,” he told reporters at his retirement news conference. “I just wanted coach Shanahan to give me a chance, and he did. Unfortunately I just wasn’t good enough to crack the starting lineup. Hopefully the way I carry myself will be an example to all the young players out there. Even when things don’t go your way, you still thank the good Lord that you got an opportunity to play in the NFL. That’s all a man can ask. At the very least, I can be thankful for one thing: That I don't have a gay-ass name like Ashley Lelie.”
