View Full Version : SoCal's Miami vs. Florida State Preview

FSU Pass Game vs. Miami Pass Defense- FSU QB Drew Weatherford has had some success against the scout team in practice but it will be a whole lot faster on Monday night. He has no experience and missed alot of workouts prior to the fall camp. Miami's defensive line should have good success collapsing the pocket especially from DT Orien Harris, DE Bryan Pata and reserve end Calais Campbell. FSU's OL has a decent player in David Castillo but not much else. Miami will get pressure but the question is, will it be swarming pressure or just decent pressure. While FSU does not have a whole bunch of targets (but keep an eye on WRs Chris Davis and freshman Richard Goodman), they will probably successfully exploit MLB Leon Williams. He is a terrible pass defender. If FSU's OL can hold up against a superior Miami DL, there will be big plays in the middle of the field with #44 in white getting abused. If the run game gets going, the play action across the middle against Leon Williams will really hurt the Hurricanes. If he struggles, expect to see Romeo Davis inserted into the game. (EDIT: Ive just learned Romeo Davis will start. Expect to see him in there during passing downs and Williams in during run downs. Davis is a smart player but he is undersized and does not have alot of natural talent, both will be targets of FSU's ground attack.) Miami's depth at CB is questionable. Kelly Jennings is a great corner, but Marcus Maxey is not special and Devin Hester has some injuries and is susceptible to double moves, despite being extremely talented. I hope FSU does not spread Miami out because they could expose the depth issue and dick Miami around with short passes to the inside guys against the nickel and dime corners. Miami's safeties should be able to break up a few passes though. If they get him on the field for a few plays, keep your eye on Kenny Phillips. He is the next great Miami safety on the level of Reed and Taylor and thats not overblown rhetoric either.
Advantage: MIAMI

FSU Run Game vs. Miami Run Defense
Florida State has two excellent backs in Leon Washington and Lorenzo Booker. Miami has to be very disciplined against these two. Look for Florida State to attack between the tackles and not to the outsides. This is for two reasons. First of all, Miami has very fast outside linebackers in Jon Beason and Tavares Gooden. Last year's leading tackler, Roger McIntosh, who is coming off of arthroscopic surgery should see some time as well and is also very athletic. Expect reserve WLB Willie Williams to see a little bit of time, he is solid vs. the run. The other reason FSU is likely to run on the inside is that DT Baraka Atkins is undersized for a DT, weighing in at aroudn 280 pounds. They will run right at him and force the LBs to close the hole quickly. Expect a few counter plays as well since FSU will try and use Miami's speed against it baiting them to overpursue one way before cutting another way.
ADVANTAGE: PUSH

Miami Run Game vs. FSU Run Defense- Miami got very lucky when FSU's best Defensive lineman, Clifton Dickson was declared ineligible for the fall. Florida State still has some good players on the line. In particular you will see Andre Fluellen and Broderick Bunkley stand out. Miami's offensive line is very shaky and in shambles. Aside from Eric Winston who looks 100%, the rest of the line has been shuffling its lineup back and forth due to injuries and youth. Miami will have a very difficult time running on Florida State with newcomers like Andrew Bain and Anthony Wollschlager on the line. In addition, Florida State possesses three excellent LBs. AJ Nicholson is a great weakside backer with good speed and pop. Buster Davis, while extremely undersized for a MLB is very productive and is a playmaker and ofcourse Ernie Sims the III is on the verge of stardom. This group will hold Miami in check. Tyrone Moss for Miami is a good inside runner but has little speed. He will prolly convert some tough yards but the combination of the OL woes and Florida State's great LB corps will make it hard to run well. Exciting scatback Derron Thomas will also get some time for Miami and he does seem to have big play potential.
Advantage: FLORIDA STATE

Miami Pass Offense vs. Florida State Pass Defense
Miami QB Kyle Wright has been generally impressive in drills. He has great height, good mobility, a great arm and a good head on his shoulders. This will be a great test for him though, because he lacks in experience. The Hurricanes have a decided advantage on the outsides. Florida State lost its crown jewel at corner, Antonio Cromartie due to injury so some no-name players will be tested heavily by very talented wideouts Ryan Moore and Lance Leggett. Sinorice Moss will also be a threat from the slot. Florida State's only threat in the back four is safety Pat Watkins. He will need to have a great game if Kyle Wright gets time to throw because the wide recievers are clearly better than the corners. A really key battle will be TE Greg Olsen against SLB Ernie Sims. Sims is a devastating hitter and an athletic LB. Olsen has been called by Coker the best TE in the country and a guy who can be even better than Shockey and Winslow. Miami will rely on Olsen as a safety valve and if Sims can hold him in check, it will really slow Miami down. The key here though is pass protection. If the OL can hold up against FSU's front four, than Wright will be successful. Make no mistake, while Wright is green, if he has time to throw, the staff is very confident that he can move the ball very effectively. FSU will likely test the OL with alot of blitzes early. Its anyone's guess whether Miami's patchwork line can hold up against FSU's talented LBs bringing heat.
ADVANTAGE: Slightly to MIAMI

SPECIAL TEAMS: Florida State has a poor kicking game and an average punter. Miami is solid at those positions and also has the very explosive Devin Hester returning.
ADVANTAGE: MIAMI

INTANGIBLES: While many people think its on Miami's side since they have won 6 in a row in this series, FSU is like a wounded animal right now. Everyone is writing them off even though they are at home in an atmosphere they will feed off of. The fact that it is a night game at Tallahassee has substantial effect. Florida State has alot of talent despite all the doom sayers and the difference in talent between the teams is greatly exaggerated. The Hurricanes have missed some practices in the last week due to inclement weather. There is a concern about rustiness.
ADVANTAGE: FLORIDA STATE

Prediction: Florida State 19, Miami (Fla.) 16

Good lord. Is there a bandwagon you DON'T jump on?

SoCal, your guys need to pull it out tonight. It's bad enough that you have to play a surprisingly strong Clemson team next week. I really don't want you guys 0-2 and pissed off heading in to face my Buffs in 3 weeks.

I want to see how this ACC conf championship game plays out. I'm not a big fan of the game unless everyone has one. Still seems dumb to make a team thats 13-0 go play a team 9-3 to find out which is the better team. On the flip side if things go NU's way thats the only way they would get a BCS bid this year :).

On offense:
Kyle started out really slow and was misfiring, threw a couple picks. They got all their 10 points in the first quarter off of our mistakes. Moss had a great night. Very consistent from start to finish, very effective on runs. Kyle got better as the game went on. Moore made an amazing catch basically on a deep jumpball for our TD. Olsen was awesome. We had some problems with dropsies and Hester was awful. He muffed punts and just didnt look very good at all. The biggest culprit was the OL. They just got to us easily and often. Kyle was great in the 2nd,3rd and 4th. We have a good one. We didnt take advantage of the chances we had when we were in their area. We missed 2 short FGs and ofcourse as you saw, Monroe bobbled the last one. We really should have scored about 20 points on these guys. Kyle, Ty Moss, Moore and Olsen were the only ones to step up. The line is a ****ing sieve.

On defense:
Great. They just made Weatherford look awful. He couldnt complete anything at all. The backs made some nice runs on us but for the most part we played pretty well. The only thing working for FSU was little slip screens to the backs. We shut them down cold besides that. We had a great stand when Monroe's punt was blocked in the third and they got the ball at our goalline. We stopped them four times and then they missed the FG. The refs hosed us a bit, Merriweather picked a ball off in their redzone and they called it incomplete. But we ****ed ourselves over too. Jennings had the biggest gift INT you could ever imagine right in his hands and he dropped it. That was also in FSUs end of the field. The defense was great, its just a shame we couldnt pull it out for them.

couple of things to add,

1. FSU's OL was just as porous as Miami's and Jeff Bowden did his usual poor Halftime lack of adjustments in protection.

2. The refs had a poor game missing several PI calls for Miami, a weak non fumble recovery, and several Late hits by both teams.

3. ST's finally went FSU's way and despite some atrocious playcalling the team outplayed the calls.

Well that was a great game. I hate seeing the 'noles win. You guys had multiple chances to win it and just flat out choked. 6+ sacks is inexcusable. Yeah preassuring the QB was the way to go. It seems like when Miami kept backs inside for max protection that things finally got moving. When games are defensive struggles you suddenly realize how important special teams are.

As a Nebraska fan I can't give any smack to Miami, but it was pretty fitting that they lost in that fashion. FSU has lost so many games on special teams that it was about time Miami experienced a heartbreaker. I don't know how well either team will do this season if their offenses play like that. It is just the first game. I would expect both QBs to pick it up over the next few weeks. Having your first start against FSU or Miami has to suck.

No, it just illustrates my opinion. I am not going to say it illustrates your ignorance, but in the area I grew up (Colorado's Front Range) with most of the people that I knew AT THE TIME, Miami was looked on in the same light as the Faiders. That being, The team to root AGAINST. Now of course there were the Oklahomas and Nebraskas, and other such teams, but the team you always wanted to see go down was MIAMI. Thats the way it was. In all honesty, both those Florida teams looked as though they are going to be real good NEXT YEAR, or possibly, at the very end of this year. Both the QB Positions (for both teams) looked mostly shaky, and in the need for some real experience. Which they will get. But what is extremely evident on both these teams is the pure and absolute athleticism each one possesses. I am sure in a few year's time there will be many first round draft picks originating from these two squads...

Your going to have a rougher time with Vtech. the defense is really nasty and their secondary is far better than State's. not too mention Vick is going to frustrate that defense a little bit as well. hate to say it but if Miami continues to play like they did they will have yet another loss for the year.

E. Winston did not impress me as much as I thought he could tonight. He played well, but FSU's DE's got the corner on him several times forcing Kyle Up into pressure. Kyle has good Escapability too or FSU could have had three or more sacks to that total. On the Other hand Orien Harris manhandled a pathetic FSU interior OL. None of the FSU QB's had more than a three step drop before there was pressure inside.

The Inability of Andrews to adjust his coverage's to control Olsen in the Last drive was HORRIBLE. Eight Guys in coverage on third down and None of them Near The Only guy to catch a first down pass the whole game for Miami? There is a reason Mickey never got past FSU!

My total unbiased look at the game in recap:

Kyle Wright has a nice future in him, he started out looking like Brock berlin but by the 2nd quarter on he was tossing some darts and making smarter decisions with the ball. My opinion is that he had trouble adjusting to the speed of college football and FSU's zone created problems for him, once he got the speed down and stuck with his main weapon in Olsen, then he was a lot more comfortable in there.

On the other hand, FSU can't buy a QB(and believe me, I'm sure they would.) Weatherford looked aweful in there as 5 of his 7 completions were dumps or angle passes to the RB's. Xavier Lee came in and after the first play, didn't look impressive as well. The gun has a cannon on him, but 2 handoffs and a botched snap from the shotgun negates a dart throw for 10 yards. Florida State escaped this one in spite of their QB's, I don't see them as a NC contender though unless they get some serious improvement.

Both team's RB's looked nice out there, Tyrone Moss was on fire and Miami really should've stuck with him more in the 1st quarter considering ow rusty Kyle Wright looked out there. Him dropping nearly 20 pounds in the offseason really paid off as he was lightning out there with still the power moves, his cramping in the 2nd half really hurt the Canes offense. Booker and Washington was a nice duo out there as well, and the only reason why FSU put up their measily 10 points. I was more impressed with Booker as he seemed more elusive with the gamebreaking speed, but FSU can't go wrong with either.

Ryan Moore and Senorice Moss both impressed me, along with Olsen. Those 3 helped Kyle Wright become more confident in the pocket and Ryan Moore made a nice play for the Canes solde TD by coming back to the ball and getting up over the FSU safety. I would like to comment on FSUs receivers, but considering that there were only 8 completions by the 'Noles with 4 of them going to RB's, its a little tough to give an opinion of how they looked(Fred Rouse might be kicking himself in the ass right now.)

FADERPROOF
09-06-2005, 06:23 PM
Miami's OL got pretty dominated, which is exactly what Kyle Wright did not need. To their defense, there were 3 or 4 times that Kyle Wright should've gotten rid of the ball and had a nice chance to, but took the sack instead(the goallin stand that FSU made in the 4th comes to mind of a prime example of him holding onto it.) I agree with Mediator that I wasn't all that impressed with Eric Winston. FSU kept coming off the edge with their DE's and Winston didn't have a chance of stopping them, wasn't all that thrilled in seeing a top rated Ol look like that out there. FSU confused Miami's OL a lot with their blitz packages, seemed a lot of the Ol just stood around looking for others to pick the player up, and the defender would come in clean and have a nice shot at Kyle Wright. FSU's line was better, but were also outmatched as Miami's speed was tough to stop whenever they blitzed. While Weatherford had a ****ty game, it wasn't just his inability to play QB that did it, he had a lot of pressure from the Miami front 4 and LB's and had to look for safety valves in RB's in order to complete passes because of it.

Both of the D's were brilliant, Miami will be an ACC championship contender as long as that D stays intact with the offense that they were showing. FSU MUST have that D come to play every single week in order to be a ACC contender, because that offense wasn't looking great by any means. I agree with SoCalBronco in that Kenny Phillips will be a stud in college annd future top 10 pick in the NFL, he only played sparingly but he made the best out of his playing time. Sims and Nicholson will be the anchors of that FSU D, and Winbly is stepping up nicely on the DL, but their secondary must get better. The loss of Cromartie showed up last night as they could not match speed with the Miami WR's and were flagged for PI on numerous occasions because of it.

It's time to stop the Devin Hester talk, the guy has the ability to take it to the house, hes fast and elusive, but he's a mile away from being the returner that Teddy Ginn is. He blew a big chance to show how good he really is on the national stage, and didn't do anything with it. The refs were right in calling the fumble out of bounds instead of FSU ball, but he on more than one occasion made a boneheaded play trying to return a punt of kick.

Who would've thought that it would've been the Miami special teams that blew the game, we're so often used to it being FSU that blows the game by missing FG's, botching snaps, and getting punts blocked. FSU did have their share of miscues on special teams, but Miami overshadowed it.

Is it really a wonder why the FSU offensive coordinator is on the hot seat down in Tallahasee? Not only did they score the least amount of points last year than any FSU team since 1981, but that was the most disgusting display of goalline offense since NC State vs. Ohio State back in 2003. Momentum is on your side, you just blocked a punt, you're at the 2 yard line...how do you not score points? Well, if you run the same play to the FB up the middle twice, then on 3rd down decide that instead of running the FB straight up the middle, that you'll try the RB up the middle, then you get the picture as to why they didnt get a TD out of this one. FSU fans have every right to be psised at the FSU playcalling, Miami rightfully should've won that game and that series of downs at the goalline would've been the reason why.

Overall it was a great game, and although FSU won this one, Miami showed to me that they were the better team and will make a bigger splash in the ACC and the national championship picture in the long run as tis season progresses. If the Canes can beat VT and run some ACC table, we could see a re-match in the ACC title game, considering the other teams FSU has in their ACC division I don't see a reason for FSU not represent their division.

Good game Canes-Noles, hopefully we see it again later on in the season.
