View Full Version : So what happens to Ernster?

He hasn't created the consistant big touchbacks we were looking for. I would like to keep him and develop him so Todd and Elam can rest their legs, but three kickers isn't the BEST choice, especially when your coverage looks ok. Of course if Dainty has pissed off Shanahan as much as myself...

Buh-bye, thanks for playing Paul.
Nothing personal, but we've got a proven Pro Bowl punter on the roster and we just don't have enough spots available to carry 3 kickers on the roster.

What if Rice retires and we still only keep 5 widouts?

I thought Sauerbrun doesn't do kickoffs, and that's why we need a punter and a KO specialist. Maybe I'm smoking something, I don't know... :woowoo:

Come clean, how much is the kid paying you to pimp him? lol
or do you really think he will make a difference?

I'm just playing devil's advocate. Honestly you probably figure the extra spot can be used on one of our receivers who has made plays on Special teams thereby eliminating the need for the kicker. Who knows, though; It is Shanahan. I'm sure at least one cut will really surprise us.

Sauerbrun can kick off. Judging by the preseason, he can kick off as good as Ernster too.

If Rice retires and we keep 5 wide receivers, I still think the roster spot is better utilized elsewhere.

I think that with Rice cut and having only 2 QBs, the cuts wont bleed us of too much talent...
Bad I know.
I think Pope, Adams and Davoe helped themselves the most, hope they both survive.

I don't think they will cut Rice, he and Shanny have a history. But Ernster is history, probably from the begining just an insurence in case trouble came from Sauerbrauns roid problems. They might use the extra spot to carry another saftey? right now we got Lynch, Ferguson, Brandon, LeSauer? maybe keep around Anderson? I think that is the postion that lacks the most depth.

I still want Luke on the team. Besides the punt I don't think hes dropped anything his way.

Last week I would have said they keep him, after the Arizona game, I say he goes on waivers...I hope he clears and makes it to the PS.

Cut, resigned to PS.
You can't have a kickoff specialist whose kickoffs aren't very special. Use the spot to keep Luke, Veal, or even Mauck.
Gotta let him walk this is a SB run year and we need the roster spaces, there will always be another good kicking prospect and with the full complement of draft picks we got we can draft another WHEN we need him.

Keep him long enough to trade to Packers or move to PS.

Remember that scene in the Dirty Dozen when they sneak into Nazi headquarters and Telly Savalas flips out at the worst possible moment?
Skinnier version of Todd Sauerbrun.
Since when are steroids supposed to give you a physique like the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man anyway?
Keep Ernster.

Humid desert air last night. He'll be fine. Too much potential to cut him and I hate having no safety nut behind that chunky screwball. Who knows when Todd's going to start pouting about something and boycott kicking off like he did in Carolina? Then we're going to be hunting under the seat cushions for Brad Daluiso's phone number. Screw that, lets play it safe and develop this kid.

Yep, sourdoughboy's kickoffs are screaming line drives that don't give the coverage team an opportunity to get down the field.
Have to find a way to keep him.

Rice is gone. Shanny would cut his Mom. We need the depth at other positions to keep a kickoff specialist that isn't any better than Todd. Get rid of LaSeauer?!!! He looks no better than Deltha (gives up big plays)

i think he's gone, and that allows us to keep another position player.
i also think the selection "plummer throws too many interceptions and thats why ernster didnt get enough touchbacks" shouldve been added to the poll.
plummer gets blaimed for everything else in this town, so why not that?

We have to cut the guy. We'll keep that spot for a WR or DL player.

I'm freakin torn....can't stand keeping 3 kickers, but on the other hand...you can never tell when TS may get arrested, go on a 3 day drinking binge etc....Ernster is supposed to be a punting machine, but we really havn't gotten the chance to see what he can really do in that dept. He doesn't appear to be retainable on his kickoff ability alone though.....

I'm more worried about him choking on a chicken bone or something. He says he can't stop eating, eats as soon as gets up and doesn't stop until he passes out at night.

True...weight management is usually a problem limited to the Defensive or Offensive Line...
Going by what Ernster has shown in preseason he's a dime a dozen type of guy. Big leg, limited technique. Try to get him on the PS, sure, but no way does he deserve a 53 man roster spot.

Ernster??? Having just spent the afternoon watching Mason Crosby booming it into the end zone for CU, I guess I'm just not impressed. Note: I sure the hell hope Shanny can find a way to get this kid next year.

What are the odds that there is a deal in the works for this guy with one of the teams (Green Bay?) that is in need of a kicker?
Not that I think we could get much for him. But I could see a scenario where a call is made, basically to the effect of, "Listen, this guy isn't going to make our team. If we release him, Teams A, B, and C are going to have a waiver priority ahead of you for him. Give us the 7th round pick we invested in him, and he is yours."
Of all the cuts, he was one that I just assumed was a foregone conclusion. His kickoffs just weren't any better last night than Elam's were, back before we had Micah "Net-30" Knorr here. Why on earth would we waste a roster spot him?

Aha! I guessed right! (along with six other people). I see two possibilities here:
1.) This is trade bait.
2.) (As I said earlier) Paul will be able to let each Kicker focus on his respective roll so they kick with maximum power. Also Paul is the long term answer after Todd wears out his welcome.

And Sauerbrun will wear out his welcome.
Remember the little salary dispute Todd had with Shanahan before the trade was even consummated? You can believe that Todd hasn't forgotten. He got pissy with John Fox over money and boycotted kickoffs later in the season to show his lingering resentment. I want a safety net under this chump if he becomes similarly disenchanted in Denver.

Yes. Paul was kicking as well as (and sometimes outkicking) Todd in practice. His release isn't as fast and he's not as savy under preasure, but he's a rookie and those things are learned in time. Paul is the future and for now Todd is great too - for now.
