And in the 1998 preseason they went 1-3 in preseason and we know how that ended. The moral of the story: The Broncos RULE!

the 1st Broncos team to lose the season opener and make the playoffs...to bad they choked in KC (in December, of course), or they probably would have won the division that year

Going 4-0 in preseason means your backups score better than the other guy's backups, especially at the skill positions. Without BVP playing well, moving the chains, the Broncs don't go4-0 this year. That's probably the big thing to get out of the 4-0.

The 1982 short-strikened 2-7 season wasn't very encouraging, either.

We went 3-1 lost to Tennesse because Loville couldn't punch it in with less than a minute left

Overall, preseason showed a few things of value. The team is fairly solid. They'll get burned here and there, but what the team has to do this year is show the mental toughness to not let bad plays compound.
Opposing teams will still mark the Broncos on their schedule as a team to beat, a team to feel really good about beating. So that's something that has to be accepted and dealt with. It's going to be a tough year. The Broncos aren't sneaking up on anybody. Every team will be primed and ready to go to meet up with the Broncs.
As I've said before, the coaching staff has to really shine this year. The coaching staff are the key. They have to make the adjustments on the fly that will restore the player's confidence after a bad play, put them in position to make a big play, keep them focused in tight games, make sure the players have a big 4th Q, make sure the 2-minute drill clicks.

I'm glad I can finally stop saying that preseason doesn't mean a thing, now that it's finally over.
I don't think any team sets out to win any of these games. Somebody just ends up winning at the end. There's no difference between 0-4 and 4-0. A week from now we we'll all forget about these meaningless games.

It shows our backups are good and can handle their own on the field. The preseason also shows that the Chefs backups suck. That is a good thing...

I checked the stats on NFL.com and we had the #1 offense over the entire preseason. The actual results don't mean too much but you can still draw inferences from the way we play - in fact in preseason its the only time the performance is more important than the result and its no good if you "Win Ugly".
Having said that you do want to see a little more grit and determination from the second and third team players becuase they are fighting for depth chart and roster spots, and I think we've seen that this year.
...so I am pumped about the preseason, but I always have to keep reminding myself that the last time the redskins won the superbowl they lost every single preseason game....so take it with a pinch of salt!!

The advantage of confidence and gelling far outweight the consequences of overconfidence IMO. You think Shanahan isn't going to tell them that preseason meant dick? That they got some big plays and turnovers and were statistically dominated by INDY yet again?
I would, and I'm not some NFL coach that could do better...well...maybe Mike Tice...maybe if he ever took that pencil out of his ear he would stop scratching it. I swear he sat down last night took off his shoe and sock and gave it a good scratching then went behind some sort of blind to relieve himself.
Still, would you prefer the team lost a game? It's still entertaining when they win, and builds some things. It's still hard to say how we will match up, but I think the team is deeper this year. I am not sure we have superstars on the front line, but we should fare better as men go down and we need fresh troops.

More than 0-4.
Plus, we didn't even put starters in for one series. It's our fault our backups kicked the team the media thinks will "break out" this year? Did we pull out the complete playbook with BVP this week in a desperate attempt to win the game? Are our second teamers better than our starters? Or maybe just close to as good?

So what you are saying is that your starters aren't much better than your second team?

No, I'm saying our second stringers kicked the crap out of Arizona's first stringers, getting 130 rushing yards to 28. The media has been so far up Arizona's ass. Now it's not going to take much to beat the rest of the NFC west, it will be one and out, but this was practice man...PRACTICE...I saw you lost again. I will ask you this. No matter what team you trot out, (and we trotted out second team from the kickoff except Elam) and went third team for the 4th quarter, on the road. So what is your problem? We were playing our first stringers?
I don't care they went 4-0, it's good, but it's better we did it with alot of backups. Look Bell had 10 yards a carry, BVP continues to improve, Watts improved, we got the DL sorted out.
I didn't see K. Bell on the highlight film either.

Obviously you haven't seen the Chiefs games. You are getting your interpretation from the scoreboard and not the actual players. You say preseason is only a practice, then act like it's a real game for the Chiefs.
Personally, I've been fairly satisfied with the Chiefs preseason. I also have not made any assumptions about the Donks preseason because I haven't watched the games, and the preseason dont mean anything.
But hey, dont let me piss in your cherios. Enjoy your preseason championship.

Baloney, I saw some of the Chef game tonight. I and others have made analysis on the overall content of play. I know Quinn has been playing, I know you have a good offense. WTF are you yapping about?
All I said I would rather be 4-0 than 0-4 in preseason. That was all. I think it shows some depth. All I said. BTW, we don't mind kicking Chefs around, but get your facts straight. Noone here said that preseaon games meant more than a way to gauge who to keep and who to kick to the curb, to your door.
All the conversation has been about how good and deep the team looks, at QB, RB, FB, TE, DL especially, LB.

I've seen them all. I'm not real impressed. I'm actually surprised from what I've seen. I expected them to look a little better than what they do. But this is pre-season.

By God, I'm so sick of preseason chatter. Bring on the pretenders, and lets see who's better. I'm in Reg Season mode now. I expect to see the Broncos chump some teams, and I'm gonna be pissed when they don't, especially in the playoffs. This isn't Kansas City, perpetual failures, these are the Denver Broncos, perpetual chumpers.
I better see some ass-kicking going on from the Broncos, come kickoff at Miami. I said at season's end last year I'm a happy guy if the Bronco first-teamers look smooth in preseason this year, and I've seen that.
So now, bring on the reg season and the pretenders to the throne. And I better see some ass-kickings being dished out by the Broncos this year. All this mamby-pambying, "Oh well, we've had some problems with cap and injuries, and we're close to being what we used to be" garbage has to be done with.
I expect an AFC Championship berth this year. And I damn well better see some superb play and coaching in the AFC Championship game. And I don't think I'm expecting that much. Just saying "I expect superb play and coaching in the AFC Championship game" is lowering the pressure I could put on the coaching staff and players.

We had the bad luck of playing Baltimore in the first round. We would of played Miami if we were division champs. Raiders lost to the Seabags on Saturday and we layed an egg on Sunday. We had our chance

Good point. And that's what you look for to translate into a good regular season. That's an excellent point, and very heartening.

I found this quip from an Arizona paper.
"View from the Press Box
It has been the theme of the preseason, and it looks as if it will be the story of the regular season: The Cardinals' running game is non-existent. The Cardinals couldn't develop one against the Broncos' second-team defense Friday. Maybe the Broncos were motivated by the home crowd. Well, with all the Broncos jerseys at Sun Devil Stadium, it looked like a Broncos home game."
