We've often had the argument on this board as to where terrorists come from. I've long beleived that it is poverty, not religion, that is creating the terrorist problem.

I give to you New Orleans as exhibit A. It sucks.. but there is a lesson to be learned here about the true effects of poverty.

IMO the poverty helps feed terrorism no doubt. Also in the NO example I think thats simply a product of our failing education system feed by poverty. How do I explain this? Take the Middle east the religious nuts need people to brainwash and its a fact people who are poor/uneducated are easy targets. They are seeking something/anything that will take them in/care for them/make them a part of something bigger then the hell they have to live in.

No matter where you go, the criminal element in any society is always going to try to exploit disasters like this one.

Could apply just as easily to the oil companies and gas station owners as the looters in NO, I guess.

Poverty and lack of opportunity for social movement have always been two of the key contributors to terrorist recruitment. That why place like the Middle East, Africa and the Southern Philippines are major sources of the current problems, all very poor and people have little opportunities to improve themselves.

In New Orleans meaning many of the looters are very poor who using this disaster to make you for their pre-hurricane conditions, where their lack of education and other factors kept them on lower ring of society

Nice theories, completely unsupported by what we know of the 9/11 terrorists and the British suicide bombers.

Poverty is not the reason those men became terrorists. They all followed a similar path - raised as Muslims, a departure from their faith, then returning to it, but to a far more radical version, under the guidance and mentorship of other radical Islamists, and then acts of terror based on those radical Islamist beliefs. Poverty was not part of the equation.
