Does anyone else find this insulting?? I mean individual teams throw away $10 million to individual players on signing bonuses and the NFL can only pony up $1 million for Americans in dire need. I saw Wal MArt donated $17 million. That is great. Tell me the NFL as a whole can do $17 million without hurting their bottom line.

It is insulting, BUT, they dont have to do ANYTHING!!! Anything they do give is a bonus. Plus many teams surrouding that area have sent in supplies to help out.

They don't have to do "anything", but one million seems a little weak considering. You have to remember the NFL doesn't hold purse strings, it's an organization that coordinates many seperate corporations into a league. Call it the UN of the NFL. We all know how effective the UN is. Or should. We need to get a handle on the situation militarily and get everyone out, clean out the dead bodies and various critters, drain Lake New Orleans, and then build bigger dikes or abandon the city for higher ground. I don't think total abaondonment is an option. Honestly, I think this is a 100 billion dollar operation, not counting private insurance.
The taxpayer will pay as usual.

Hell the Yankees owner gave a million just by himself, and he isn't even affiliated with the NFL. Come on, if the NFL is gonna give, surely they would be the ones to give the most.

I like Warrick Dunn's idea. Each player from each team, except the Saints, donates $5000. That equates to $265,000 per team. For a grand total of $8,215,000 for the league. As he puts it, some guys will drop $5000 a week on frivolous things, and this is important.

New Orleans has hosted 9 Super Bowls. Can you imagine the amount of revenue that city has generated for the National Football League?
At the same time, I think the criticism should be directed towards the Fortune 500 companies that haven't donated dick.

It is a joke, the billion dollar TV contract, and all they can pony up is a million? Opening day ticket proceeds should go to NO that would be classy, hell I was even checking out my www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com web site and all proceeds from their programs and concessions for all sports events for the whole month of Sept will go to relief. Com'on NFL your top brass can afford to not go on one trip this year. Help out the city that has hosted 9 of your SB's you have made millions off of them for years, now it's your turn.

I do hope this is a miscommunication of some kind.
A million bucks for a catastrophe of this magnitude is something like deploying one guy with a siphon hose to drain off the flood waters.
The NFL would've been better off pawning off the charity to individual team collections than to throw in a couple of dollars & claim they did their part.
How incredibly embarassing.

yeah you would figure they would pony up not just a million dollars but help out with the relief efforts by giving kids nfl gear etc. What a shame they treat NOLA like this after hosting 9 super bowls.

Let's bring in Cher and Barbara Striesand to siphon off more money in a "Charity Event".

Did you know that in some of the 9/11 "charity events" only 20% went to charity. Out of that, I don't know the exact figures, but I would guess half made it to actual victims. Administrative costs, ya know. As far as I'm concerned, I cover an entertainers expenses, that's it. And these promoters...they get their cut. These concerts are huge ripoffs. I've looked into it.

The NFL needs to be a little creative with the season beginning. For example, I think the NFL should match any money that the stars involved in the Kickoff Party donate to the cause.

I think that offer is insulting. They would have been beter not donating anything.
Hey, at least they fixed the problem for 2 families.

I called out the NFL this morning on our radio station. I also think it's a joke that the owner of the Houston Texans can give 1 million, and the NFL only gives that amount. What an insult.

I agree. $1 million doesn't pay for a backup quarterback. A *real* gesture would be to donate all proceeds, including tv revenue, for one regular season week.

Bob McNair also set up a matching fund phone line which raised over $1.4 million from Texan fans which McNair promised to match up to $1 million. The funds will be targeted to the refugees that have fled to the Houston area.

Wow! 1 million.........that must have really set the NFL back. They might have to start laying people off to make up for the loss.

Bill Bidwell turned his pockets inside out and donated a whole $25,000.00. Meanwhile, Hillary Duff donated $250,000.00. So, I hope the Broncos humilate the Cardinals, and I think some of you should go out buy Hillary's new album. Hillary will be overjoyed that you took the time to show your appreciation.

NFL to donate $1 million to hurricane relief
NFL.com
(Sept. 1, 2005) -- For the past several days, the people in the Gulf Coast states, especially those living in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, have had to deal with the unthinkable. No one could have predicted the amount of personal and structural devastation Hurricane Katrina would leave.
Though thousands of storm victims will eventually need to focus on how to begin rebuilding their lives, their immediate needs are for life's most elemental essentials -- food, shelter and clean water.
The victims of Hurricane Katrina need our help, and they need it now. Help now.
Like many people across the country, the NFL, its teams and players have either been directly or indirectly affected by the storm's devastation.
The NFL has been working with the American Red Cross (ARC) to determine how best we can assist them in their efforts to respond to this terrible tragedy. The NFL announced that it will donate $1 million to the ARC towards relief efforts.
