View Full Version : Sirius Satellite Radio Worth It?

minibronco

I need some help and guidance from existing Sirius Satellite radio owners. I already have a receiver, but I want to know if the $12.95 monthly fee is worth it.

I did a lot of research and all the marketing gimmick sounds good (no static, commercial-free, lively DJ's) and I see that there's good Bronco's coverage. Since I live in Los Angeles and it's hard to see all the games without going to the bars all the time, the home and away stations might help me.

Any opinions?

You should,too.

The answer is 'yes'. Move on.

Why is it better than XM?

It is all about content. Their federal licenses mandate that they need to have a common chipset by late this year so that you could use the same hardware for both and switch back and forth. That deadline will get extended.

Yes. XM does not have the NFL (Most obvious reason). I spend a lot of time in my car for business travel and there's nothing like listening to the same station as you drive across an entire state. It siriusly rocks. Oh, and you can tune in most of the stations on your home computer over the internet once you have an account. Makes it easy to listen indoors.

personally I've had it since christmas and hardly ever use it, I have the adaptor for the home & car but I've never even got the one for the car installed... If I listen to the radio it's usually only on the way to work in the morning and I like to listen to the local radio show, then when I get in to work I like to listen to Lex & Terry on the feed from www.wzzr.com ... so for me it's not worth it... I usually only listen in the house if there are Broncos preseason games on, other than that it only gets turned on when I'm cleaning or doing stuff around the house..

My radio reception sucks in of1. I was thinking about adding a Sirius also. Does it work everywhere or will it not work in the plains of Kansas and other worthless spots in America.

since I don't have it installed in the car I can only tell you about the home docking station, it picks up ok, but it seems the satellites rotate and I lose the signal often and have to move the antenna around every 30 mins or so to find the satellites again.. it can be a pain in the ass

Why is it better than XM?

It's not. Give me XM 54 Lucy any day of the week. Honestly, it just depends on your tastes. XM has a little more rock than Sirius, but Sirius has better pop/hip hop stations from what I've heard. I can't stand listening to football on the radio (just not the same) so that's not a selling point for me either.

My XM radio does not give out in the state of Colorado except at teh midway point of Eisenhower tunnel.

Just be sure to have someone who knows what they are doing install the radio. I guess they are more touchy than a regular radio.

You should not have to move the antenna on a stationary unit once it is set. Point it toward North Dakota is what their VP told me. The coverage should hit all of US except parts of northern alaska and Hawaii. Should also get proper reception in southern Canada, Mexico, Central America and most of South America. The Satellites are not in a stationary orbit like weather or GPS satellites, but has an eliptical orbit theat makes a figure eight over the western hemisphere.

I bought mine in April and I love it. Of course I only get three radio stations over the air where I live so I have a bit of a skewed perception. The NFL Radio is what I listen to most of the time. The music stations are okay, but they have playlists just like every other radio station and you wind up hearing the same songs over and over again. At least there is a wide selection of channels to change to if you want to hear a different song.

For me it's worth the yearly subscription fee.

It hasn't moved in a while, I got in on 6/28/04 at $3.08. Hopefully there will be a decent jump in the upcoming holiday season and after Stern starts up. Highly doubt it will ever touch the $34 mark, but it would be nice.

It's a two horse race. Personally I wouldn't invest in one or the other. I would hedge myself and buy some of both. One of them is going to pop.

Got in on XMSR 12/17/03 at $22.92 but it is alot easier to buy at $3 than $22 so needless to say I have more Sirus. I don't think Satelite radio will become a common thing, and XM seems to be offered in a lot more in new cars than Sirius is.

Hell yeah it's worth it, I have had mine for over a year now and I have not listened to the "radio" since, nor have I bought a CD, investment paid right there! If you buy the entire year you only have to pay for 10 months or something like that, better value.

Thats an uniformed statement. Sirius is dominating the automobile contract industry and in 2006 will be rolling factory installed in just about everything but Hyundai.

This time last year it was 3.80, right now it hovers around 7. When the Christmas/Football/Howard Stern pop comes, uninformed investors will send the price flying to 15-20 pts... thats when you dump. Go to Yahoo Finance and follow everyday... when the insiders get out, you get out.

I own a butt load of Sirus stock (bought it at @ 3.00 and then some more @ 5.30) but think that XM is better. You can get both on your computer if you have a subscription but the XM interface is better. Can't go wrong with either but as of right now, I prefer XM.....

It works everywhere except in tunnels. I live in miserable Kansas and it works fine. I don't listen to FM radio anymore. NFL channel is awsome. Nonstop football all year round. Somehow they can keep talking about it and keep you interested. I highly recommend sirius.

What content? If you can listen to NFL games on the radio, go with Sirius then. Personally, I have to watch it, listening doesn't do it for me. Howard Stern? Please. I can get fart jokes anywhere. Most overrated show since "Friends" went off the air.

For those that want to check out XM with an open mind, check out XMTestDrive.com. You can find out which stations play your favorite bands. You can get station suggestions. It's good stuff.

Hey Meck,
It works everywhere, I just got mine the other week and love it. I got Sirius because of the NFL coverage. There is one channel devoted to NFL coverage and at least 4-5 others that have tons of NFL coverage from time to time. Plus you can listen to every NFL game. I've heard some college games too even tho they don't promote the College game. The only place I've heard where coverage is bad is in Southern FL because of the Satellite angle and that was withe XM satellite. Siriously.... Sirius rocks.
Looking forward to seeing you in Denver on the 24th.

NFL Channel, all NFL Games, NBA games, HairNation, Shade45, RawComedy.

Also you can listen online at work with internet connection. All you need is you account number. So now worries with not getting a signal in doors in an office.

Well worth the price of $12.95.

I've had sirius radio for 2 years and I couldn't be more satisfied. The coverage of the nfl is excellent, you get both broadcasts the home team and the away team on different channels. Plus, you get the nfl channel which starts at 7am CST and goes with live call in shows untill 6pm CST and then nfl total access goes untill 7pmCST. Then they replay the programs over again for the second and third shifts. All the music channels are commercial free, most have live DJ's. The comedy and news channels are pretty good, but some of the syndicated channels do have commercials. Weather channel and traffic channels are nice, all channels are digital quality with absolutely no static. Final Grade A- I travel a lot and I couldn't live without mine.
