(CBS4) Englewood, CO The Denver Broncos plan to cut embattled running back Maurice Clarett, third-string quarterback Danny Kannell, tight end Patrick Hape and several others on Tuesday, the official NFL cutdown day, CBS4 News has learned.
The Broncos told Clarett on Sunday he would be cut on Tuesday, the first round of roster cuts. The controversial rookie was drafted in the third round of this year's draft.
He didn't play in any of the Broncos' first three preseason games. A groin injury kept him from practicing much of training camp.
Other players the Broncos plan to cut include: defensive tackle Luther Elliss; defensive end Raylee Johnson; guards Cameron Spikes and Tim Stuber; and wide receivers Romar Crenshaw and B.J. Johnson.
Clarett, the most notable of the bunch, played one season at Ohio State as a true freshman in 2002, leading the team to a national championship victory. He recorded one of the finest freshman campaigns in NCAA history. But off-the-field problems kept him from playing his sophomore year, and a legal battle failed to make him eligible for the 2004 NFL Draft. Rules state a player must be three years removed from high school before playing in the NFL.
When he signed with the Broncos, Clarett passed up a signing bonus for a contract with performance incentives which could have made him $7 million.
Quarterback Danny Kanell is also expected to be cut on Tuesday. He was the backup QB last year, but fell to fourth string with the promotion of Bradlee Van Pelt this season. He told CBS4's Vic Lombardi that he had a good offseason, but understands the team's desire to go with a youth movement.

BVP didn't "beat" Kannell off the team, Kannell threw interceptions in practice everyday and so they cut him.

BVP was given a shot, and he took advantage.... I'm all for it. Kanell was just good enough to loose.

I called that Kanell cut, at least Shanny is classy enough to give him a chance to catch on somewhere else. Damn shame Ellis never got a chance to show what he could do with the injuries. Apparently Shanny got the negatives to those photos Hape had of him.

That's what's made me the most upset. He makes it sound like the staff "had it in for him" or something. I was laughing out loud at his "its not performance related" comment. That day that the D had something like six interceptions were mostly his fault. Hopefully he'll do well in some non-athletic field.

On Putz's 28 yard TD catch and run, Hape would have gotten 3 yards.

I'm kind of surprised about Hape as well. I thought he might get cut, but in the first round of cuts? zowie! I don't think anyone should be thrilled to see him go unless you're assuming that what's left is even better. He never did anyhting other than what we wanted him to do. I think someone will pick him up somewhere.

All from inside the 5 yard line. Needless to say I think Putz or Alexander could catch a 3 yard pass just as well as Hape.
Don't need to waste a roster spot on hime. I'd rather use it on Fatefehi, Davis, Adams or Devoe

I'm sad to see Luther Ellis not make it. I was hoping he could return to his Pro Bowl days.
I'm glad to see Kanell go. I feel pretty good about BVP as the back up. If Plummer goes down I'd say the Broncos still at least have a chance. And BVP seems like he's worth developing. When was the last time the Broncos had one of those?
As for Hape, I don't like or hate the guy. He did seem usefully in the redzone though. He was so much of a nobody that when they lined up inside the five yard line nobody ever covered him. Most of his TDs he was running uncovered for an easy score.

It is a little strange, I mean he was even in there with the first unit when they were running that Jumbo formation (3 TE's). I guess that was more out of neccessity since White House ie hurt, but still odd.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it on the goal line, not only that, but on that TD they put Carswell and Cornell Green in at the End positions (They reported eligible). I read somewhere they called it the "Hippo" unit.

Even todays' moves shouldn't make all the bubble players sleep any easier.
Keep in mind that Shanahan prefers the two QB roster, due to, in part, the need for a KO specialist & a long snapper.
Notice, Sauerbrun was manning the KO duties Saturday. If KO's to the one are good enough, expect the Broncos to keep an additional D-lineman, O-lineman or even WR (they really do seem to want to keep Todd DeVoe...but it's either him or Rice, and Rice wins that battle)
There's a fair to good chance Kanell won't be signed and can be re-signed if events take a bad turn.
As for Matt Mauck...he'll either be waived & re-signed to the Practice Squad...or released outright. I believe he has one more year eligibility for the Practice Squad...and may be a candidate for Europe.
Coaches said time & again that they expected Matt to take that next step up and take the #2 job. He hasn't done that & it could be all or nothing for him.
The battle for the final DT spot now comes down to Demetrin Veal & Dorsett Davis...you can bet the farm both will play a long, long time against Arizona.
Coaches like Veal, so the battle may be closer than you think.
They now need twelve to get down to 53, so I really don't too many more surprises..painful maybe, but not all that surprising.

Many people cite the fact that he could play FB as the reason they kept him but if you noticed when he was in there at FB he was horrible. He is too tall to be a FB, I believe he is 6'4 and 264 lbs. FBs have to be able to get through the hole in the OL and take out a LB. He wasn't a RB and could never get through the holes. He would trip over the feet of the Olineman and he didn't have good agility either.

If it si between Veal And Davis then advantage Davis simply because he was a high draft pick. I think he's played better as well.

I've begun wondering this myself.
Truthfully, he hasn't looked all that great in camp + he's not getting all that many reps in practice or pre-season games.
I'll guarantee you this, hwoever...IF he isn't going to make it, I'm guessing Shanahan would announce a tearful retirement press conference...NOT just add his name to a cut list.

He's not getting reps (which you could pawn off on "resting the vets) He leaves to visit his daughter all the time missing several practices...I thought he wasn't even going to come back from the last visit. We'll see I guess, but I agree if he did, it would be a "special event".

Oh, brother. The guy switched positions in the final three weeks to fill in when Kyle Johnson went down. I guess he was supposed to walk in and bury LBs like Tom Rathman in his prime.
Oh, well, another day or two of revisionism and the Ha(p)ters will need to move on and find a new whipping boy. But who?
Who's another blue collar street free agent who's squeezed the maximum out of his talents as a Bronco? Bonus points if they play multiple postions or convert big plays when they get their opportunities.
I'm guessing Shanahan is going to bestow a roster spot on a project this year and they knew Hape was going to lose out in the numbers game. They probably figured this would increase his chances of catching on somewhere right away. If he doesn't, I'm sure management will keep his phone number handy in case of injury.

When he was in a game, good things always seemed to happen.

I guess Rice was moved to No#3 because he had a great camp (and because Watts sucked). I guess the pre-season games don't matter. I'm starting to wonder if Shanny didn't use Rice much in the games in case he sucked then he wouldn't have to answer any questions. I think his whole intention was to brag about his "great" camp performance and leave him out of game situations. I think Shanny took the easy road on Rice.
NFL.com's Adam Schefter reports Denver Broncos WR Jerry Rice has had a great camp, on and off the field. He'll stick, meaning the Broncos will cut one more young wide receiver. Chances are it's last year's sixth-round draft pick WR Triandos Luke, who also has served as a returner for Denver.

Luther and Raylee both have enjoyed long, distinguished careers. It's sad to see their careers most likely come to an end.
I hope what Hape contributed to this franchise isn't forgotten by the fans.
Last, my only personal contact on the team is through Nate Jackson and I am pulling hard for him to crack the team again. He's as much of a long shot as you will find in the NFL. He beat out one of my best friends for his WR position in HS (who happens to be a diehard Broncomaniac like myself). I tell my friend, there's no shame in losing your job to a future NFL player.

Ernester probably won't make it to the practice squad or if he does I think sometime during the year some team would sign him off of it. Of course we really haven't seen him. I was a little surprised Sauerbrun didn't do better on his kickoffs on Saturday. Even though most went to the 1 or 2 and he did get a couple touchbacks, they were very low line drives with not much hang time...unlike his big punts. Considering that was in the Mile High air, I was assuming Ernster might have got a spot. No way Ernster gets through waivers considering the trouble some teams are having with kickers in camp.

The sad thing is, stupid Clarett will get all the press. Too bad. There were some real NFL Players cut.
The rest of the guys who are being released know it's because they are being given an opportunity to make it on another team. And if they don't? Well, guys like Kannell or Hape are only an injury away from having their phone ring.
I've wondered while watching the young guys go to Jerry Rice on the sideline if there isn't a chance he spends his final season as a player-coach. I don't know what he sees as his future, but if has the ability to teach, who better?

I have my money on Rod Smith. As soon as Watts and Lelie start to blossom this board is going to be lit up with
1. Rod should be our third WR
2. Rod's production is down. When is he going to retire?
3. Trade Rod and draft a (whatever)
We should set up a website so that I can personally tell each of these fans to just choke themselves.
EDIT: My hope is that Jerry Rice makes it possible for Rod to stick around as long as he wants. Rod is a Hape like player that just stuck in there until something good happened. He's the one I consider a good luck charm.

1. I have nothing against Hape, but it is a poor indictment of the Red Zone Woes when your best red Zone reciever is the third TE/H-back.
2. Tim Stuber wiffed horribly on a sack versus the Colts game and was pathetic getting push up front in the running game.
3. What's up with Cameron Spikes getting the early Boot? I wonder if the system really screwed him up. Green and Clement look to be the main backups on the OL and they are both Tackles. The loyalty to Carswell is starting to make me nervous with OG. I seriously Wish they would just move Clabo back to OG exclusively and let him go at it.
