My take on the 2005 roster:
OFFENSE
1. QB - Jake, please don’t go down. As a Wyoming Cowboy I have a lot of hatred to get over with BVP. Having watched him thus far, he is a football player, he has the tools, and surprisingly is saying all the right things, but he is a PROJECT. In the full speed NFL, he would be the proverbial deer in the headlights.
2. WR - I think Rice being the #3 takes a lot of the pressure off of Watts. Lets him work on technique, clear his head, and progress the way a WR in a complicated scheme needs to.
3. RB - Denver will always be able to run the ball. I don’t care who totes the rock as long as the chains are moving and the defense is on the sideline resting.
4. TE - Three good pass catching tight ends, but I’m not convinced any of them can run-block. Thank goodness House will still be on the roster.
5. O-Line - Depth is all I worry about, but if they avoid the major injury they will be fine.
DEFENSE
1. D-Line - For all of the talk of the Browns DL busts, can anyone name ONE player on the post-expansion Browns who was not a bust? These guys were consensus 1st round picks coming out of college, they just had the misfortune of moving to Cleveland. Throw in a healthy, motivated Trevor Pryce and they could be scary.
2. LB - This could be one of the best LB corps ever. Starters are excellent, depth is good.
3. DB - I’m a little worried, Walls is fragile and has never really put together the kind of work he needs to be a top-flight corner. Rookies get targeted and schooled in the NFL, no matter how good they are. The only thing that saves the secondary is if the D-Line lives up to its potential.
SPECIAL TEAMS
They can’t possibly be worse than they have been. So far I’m encouraged by the kicking and I think Adams & Williams good be very good in the return game.
I am optimist but I think this team will either put it all together and be very good, or they will be exposed and be very bad.
