He has to beat out Predator, Pierce, Burns and Sykes for one of two or three spots.
Unless Meyers or someone can displace Leach as long snapper, Hape or Jackson go this week or next. Shanahn does Hape a favor and gives him an extra week to find a new team.

He won't be in the first round of cuts. I'm thinking Burns gets cut and signs as a coach.

I don't think Kanell will be among the first round of cuts. My instincts (and that's all they are) are telling me that Shanahan is still deciding on whether to keep Mauck or Kanell and won't make that decision until he has to. Pretty good list, otherwise...

Looks good, but some how I think Hape sticks around again this year. I don't know why we would keep Jackson over Hape. If I thought that Jackson would make it a year without breaking then I would keep him but thats not going to happen.

Today's Denver Post hinted that Nate Jackson's job is quite safe despite his nagging hamstring problem:

Tight ends
This position appears set. Stephen Alexander (who has been playing in single tight end sets), Jeb Putzier and Nate Jackson should all have active roles. All three are exceptional receivers. If the Broncos go into a four-receiver set, it doesn't have to be all receivers.
Two days ago, the Broncos inked Jackson to an extension through the 2006 season.

Exactly. And I will be shocked if common sense that DK (even thou I dont like him) says Shanny will keep the only backup on the roster with game experiance. Mauck will either make waiver to the Practice squad or land in another team.

Problem with Sykes is that we are in year 3 of the great Sykes project and with the exception of a bit of face time that he saw last year, he really hasnt been able to quite shine in the eyes of Shanny and staff to really make much of an impact.
I hate to see him earmarked for waiver wire fodder but considering our depth at LB, and the need to shore up spots at other defensive spots, it wouldnt suprise me to see him end up not making it out of August in a Broncos uni. Hell, I'm just proud that he has made it this far along after his injury a few years ago.

pretty accurate list.
there's no way kanell gets dumped in the first cuts, and its unlikely hape or green would be either, but other than that i agree.
as for the mention of cutting hape early so he could hook on with another team, i'd agree with that as a possibility EXCEPT for the fact that jackson is hurt right now, and even if he wasnt, you dont want to release a guy like that and then have alexander or putz have a serious injury the next week.

If Hape gets cut it will be because of Leach stepping up, not Nate IMO. Khan said that Leach had a very impressive camp catching the ball, so maybe that makes Hape expendable.

Kannel gets cut if Shanahan has made his decision to go with a young QB(s) as the backup(s). Vets are cut all the time at the first cut down to give them a chance to find another team before the season starts.

i just dont see that shanahan could already have his mind made up.
i think he's waffling between keeping three or two.
if its two, kanell would get the boot and you get mauck back on practice squad (and God help us if plummer gets hurt)
if its three, i gotta think kanell stays and mauck goes back to the practice squad or gets an outright release.
im sure shanny is sympathetic to kanell wanting time to latch on somewhere, but i just dont think he's made his mind up yet, which means kanell stays for now.

Sucks having depth... who do you cut. See linebacker, cornerback, and running back. Since we are into specialists (long snapper, kickers) something's gotta give. I'd imagine Denver makes run at keeping only 2 QBs again and putting Mauck on the PS. I wonder if they would cut Duke in the first round of cuts as well. Since they intend to put him on the PS, don't they keep him until the last possible moment so he can play in the final preseason game?

Great thread. It's threads like this that I love the mane for. I think Leach, Burns, Jackson, and Coleman are on the team. Kannell is gone, Mauk is PS. Green might not make final cuts with Sykes, Burns, Cukwurah and Pierce as locks. You also gotta wonder if Jackson edges Hape out, but then we wonder that every year and it doesn't change the fact that they keep him. The only thing is that Tim Brewster is the new kid on the block so maybe his opinion of who should stay and go will shake things up a bit. We'll see, I guess.
The other thing is that these second string Tight Ends were used as the slot receiver a good deal in camp, so you got to wonder if we don't go 5 wideouts this season and keep extra tackles and running backs.

The deciding factor between Green & Sykes will be Special Teams play.
Watch the two perform against Indy...should be an indicator...not the deciding factor mind you, but if one is a major player in disrupting returns or blocking...that's your guy.
One has to go, unfortunately, and Green has gotten better & better the last couple of Training Camps...Sykes, however, has that speed.
Shanahan really likes Patrick Hape, and don't forget that he's a load as a goal-line FB.
With the development of Kyle Johnson, I'm not sure sure Patrick has that security to fall back on any longer, so he may be one of those painful cuts for Shanahan.

I specifically asked about Clarett to one individual, shall we say, connected to the Broncos, who said Clarett was 'front & center' on potential cut lists...and that was a week ago today (Friday)...so, no-one has really kept tight-lipped about the fact that it just aint happenin' with this kid.
So, to answer your question...Schefter is only picking up on the vibes that no-one seems too shy to put out there.
As for Dayne...I wasn't aware that the Broncos have turned down a potential trade. How can he NOT go with BVP?
Pay no mind to the hype, BVP really is NAILS!
My earlier take: (BVP) he scrambles with authority, makes people miss, keeps his head up and his eyes scanning, has the pump-fake down cold, and can FLY (at least for a QB not named Vick). I'm not exagerating, either. And he's had 2 TD passes DROPPED by Darius Watts (the 49ers TD pass to Watts was dropped, but the Texans TD pass to Watts actually wasn't a drop - his second foot was on the line).[/quote]
Kannell is a G H O S T
