Hell, I've been performing human sacrifices all week hoping that the football gods would bless us with such a talent.

On a side note, the Tampa area is nearly devoid of Chief and Raider fans now. :)

What if we draft Tebow?

That all depends on where we draft him and for what position. As a quarterback I'm not sure I'd want to draft him at all.

Pelini obviously looks like he'll have us fielding good defenses for years to come, but this group was something special. Given that the juniors and seniors were part of one of the worst squads in the entire nation two years ago, to see them become a top 3 D is amazing and gratifying. It would be hard to overstate how incredible the turnaround has been on that side of the ball.

The future looks good. Hopefully the offense can improve. They will have some experience now. One of these QBs need to step up. I have no doubt we will keep up the great defensive performance.

This was a great game to end the season. This defense is something special.

Owa took USC off his list because of the coaching change. If the Oregon coach would have went to USC they would have been off the list. Its between Oregon and Nebraska. We have to over come his family being so far away from him. Bo Pelini had a in home visit with him yesterday. I hope it went well.

Jamal Turner QB from Texas committed to the 2011 class. He is the 16th ranked player from Texas and might be a 5 star. We have three commits to the 2011 class and they all could end up being 5 star players. It's a heck of a job they are doing so far.

Awesome. Rumors are that Carnes is a likely commit, so that would be two good prospects at QB in the next couple years. We landed a QB for the 2011 class before getting any in the 2010 class.

A slow summer. A solid fall. A downer December. A fast finish. And, at the wire, two quality picks, and one whale lost.

Nebraska football can certainly live with its 2010 recruiting haul, especially as quarterback Brion Carnes and safety Corey Cooper committed to NU on Signing Day. The class is fourth or fifth in the Big 12 overall, and first or second in the North, depending on whether you think Missouri’s collection of skill talent trumps NU’s trench bunch. (I don’t.)

But in 2011, the Huskers will have their chance to get fat off the recruiting lamb. And Bo Pelini and his staff will put on the 365-day full court press to get it done. Bo seems to know it, too, having landed three commitments for 2011.

“We have a nice group of kids committed for next year already,” Pelini said Wednesday. And NU has lined up more visitors before Junior Day in the spring.

I hate to get all futuristic on you when you’re still luxuriating in the 2010 bath. But Wednesday kicked off what I expect to be the most ambitious year of Bo’s tenure at Nebraska. With a narrow loss in the Big 12 Championship and the blowout Holiday Bowl win, Bo’s confidence turned the corner. He’s thrown out phrases - “five times better,” “Nebraska’s back” - that suggest he’s ready to hit the next part of the process.

“I came here to win a national championship and to win championships,” Pelini said. “And I recruited a class that I fully believe will get that accomplished.”

Most new coaches sign their defining class in year two. That’s the “regime change” class. Or the “you made me promises, promises” class. Look at Bill Callahan in 2005. Nick Saban in 2008. Rich Texas A&M's Mike Sherman in 2009. Rodriguez in 2009. Auburn’s Gene Chizik in 2010. Saban, in fact, has signed three massive classes in a row - 32, 27 and 26. Folks, that’s the whole football team. And that’s what you call scholarship turnover. Bama has a national title in back pocket - and more to come.

Pelini, meanwhile, has held off. It’s a curious, impressive restraint, actually. He’s lived up to the old Bear Bryant adage: He took Bill Callahan’s recruits and beat guys he once recruited to Oklahoma.

Because so much of Callahan’s 2007 class didn’t redshirt - and will be counted upon to carry NU to a Big 12 title in 2010 - Pelini has gambled, to some extent, with two small classes (20 and 21 signees in 2009 and 2010) in a row. Texas employed this same strategy in 2008 and 2009. We’ll see if the Horns get away with it. While Bo signed 28 in 2008, six of those players left the program within a year.

Bo could have cut more dead weight from the program, or handed out fewer scholarships to walk-ons, to create more room in 2010. He didn’t. All hands on deck for a huge 2010 season that will be won with Callahan’s last class and Pelini’s first two. Provided NU produces the boffo year fans expect, Bo should have 25 or more scholarships to hand out for 2011, and that’s when he can make the big push with the nation’s best skill players.

As for 2010?

It’s a talented, deep class on defense - second best in the Big 12, I say - even without stud defensive end Owa Odighizuwa, who committed to UCLA. NU got its fill of interior defensive linemen and padded depth at defensive end. JUCO linebacker LaVonte David is, at the very least, a special teams dynamo next year, and potentially more. Safeties Corey Cooper and Harvey Jackson have prototypical size and speed.

Bo is rightly building the side of the ball that best gives him a chance to win the Big 12 North. A great defense can carry an offense looking for an identity. Not in every game, and not forever, but the 2010 bunch matches up exceedingly well to any offensive haul in the Big 12. Yes, including UT and OU.

NU paid close attention to the trenches, too, signing 10 offensive or defensive linemen. It takes discipline to do that, because linemen rarely play well without a redshirt season.

We’ve already rehashed offensive recruiting enough in the last two months. The Huskers have one season - 2010 - to prove themselves to top-flight skill talent and patch over a washout 2008 class and this thin 2010 bunch.

NU arguably has a commit from one of them in Arlington (Texas) quarterback Jamal Turner. San Antonio running back Aaron Green, brother of Nebraska cornerback Andrew Green, is another. Two more signature, top-flight receivers. And more speed. Much more speed.

“The best recruiting tool is to win,” Pelini said. “We’re starting to do that.”

Well, yes and no. Winning helps. But a clear vision - and sheer salesmanship - are the best formula. Saban parlayed a 7-6 season in 2007 into one of the great recruiting classes in the last 10 years, which has already produced Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, Terrance Cody and three other starters on the 2009 national title squad.

Anecdotally or statistically, there’s a connection to getting top-shelf talent - no matter where Rivals and Scout rank it - and turning around that talent in short order. Pelini sloughs off those services, to some extent, because he doesn’t always think they’re accurate.

“I like our football team,” Pelini said. “As long as we stay on track of where we are and the direction we’re headed and they keep working the way they are, I like our football team…we want to develop each and every guy on our team and if we do that, we can compete with anybody in the country.”

That confidence in infectious, and it speaks to Pelini’s holistic recruiting philosophy: The selling doesn’t end when the LOI is faxed.

“Recruiting just started today,” Pelini said. “Now it’s our job is to take these young men who have high goals, high expectations, and help enable them to make those dreams come true. And I believe that’s where this staff is at its best.”

The 2011 class has..
Jamal Turner QB
Ryne Reeves OL
Tyler Moore OL

Moore is the highest ranked player right now on that list. Aaron Green RB should be a commit sooner or later. His brother plays for us now. Everything I have seen has him as a 5 star. Reeves should be the top center in the nation or close too it. We are looking at 3 or 4 possible top 150 players committing to us pretty early this year.

ndamukongsuh-ap.jpgThe Associated PressNdamukong SuhA release from Nike today:

NIKE BUILDS ON ITS OUTSTANDING FOOTBALL HERITAGE, SIGNS TOP PRO FOOTBALL PROSPECT SUH

Standout Defensive Lineman Ndamukong Suh is Newest Nike Athlete

Nike today announced a partnership with 2009 AP National Player of the Year and top NFL prospect Ndamukong Suh. One of the nation's premiere collegiate defenders, Suh is projected to be drafted at the top of the first round of the 2010 NFL draft this summer.

Suh will join selected Nike football athletes participating in a webcast Friday, February 5, kicking off the 2010 Nike High School Combine Tour (Players will be available to media during webcast -- press alert to follow). Various Nike athletes will be attending the combines, which are open to high school football players at any level across the country, free of charge.

The 6-4, 300-pound Suh was one of the most dominating defensive tackles in recent memory while starring at Nebraska. At the conclusion of the 2009 season, the Huskers senior was recognized for numerous accolades and awards including a consensus first-team All-American selection, Defensive Player of the Year honors in addition to being named a Heisman Trophy finalist. Suh also became only the second player in Big 12 history to earn both the Defensive Player and Lineman of the Year awards in the same season.

Suh tallied 85 total tackles (24 for loss), 12.0 sacks and 1 interception during his senior campaign. Many analysts are predicting Suh will be the top overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Born in Portland, Ore., Suh was a prep star at nearby Grant High School, so his teaming up with Beaverton, Ore.-based Nike is a natural homecoming.

He joins a top roster of football of NFL Nike athletes, including: LaDainian Tomlinson, Troy Polamalu, Adrian Peterson, Larry Fitzgerald, Tom Brady and Brian Urlacher.

Redshirt freshman stars in spring game

Associated Press

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A third man has emerged in the competition for starting quarterback at Nebraska.

Taylor Martinez was all the buzz during spring practice, and Saturday he showed why to the 77,936 fans who turned out at Memorial Stadium for the Red-White game.

The redshirt freshman threw for touchdowns on two of his first three series and rushed for a game-high 60 yards as his Red squad won 21-16.

Sophomore Cody Green led the White team to one touchdown and a field goal, passed for 155 yards and ran for 12.

Senior Zac Lee, the starter last season, was sidelined all spring after having surgery on his right (throwing) elbow.

Martinez appears well-suited for the direction the Cornhuskers want to take their offense. Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson plans to incorporate more quarterback runs, something the Huskers showed in the 33-0 Holiday Bowl win over Arizona.

Watson said Martinez is clearly the fastest quarterback and that it's only a matter of time before he hits the game field.

"We're not stupid," Watson said. "We're going to use talent. He's got talent. So we're going to use that talent."

Martinez completed 5 of 9 passes for 79 yards and had a tipped ball intercepted. He worked four full series in the first half before giving way to others.

His first two plays were designed runs, and he ran with confidence. Twice on his opening series he looked to pass, saw no one open and took off, the first time for 7 yards and the second for 10.

"I think you guys saw his speed," running back Rex Burkhead said. "He took control of the huddle and really ran with it."

The first time Martinez threw, he delivered the ball on a line to Tyler Legate for a 6-yard touchdown. He later hit Brandon Kinnie on a post pattern for 36 yards, with Kinnie dragging four defenders the last 5 yards to the end zone.

Martinez wasn't made available to reporters because coach Bo Pelini doesn't allow players who haven't been in a game to speak with the media.

"He's got a skill set that, honestly, you can't coach," Watson said. "He can put his foot in the dirt and just go. He's an instinctive runner. If something breaks down, he can make something big from it for us. And he's just getting better and better as a passer."

A couple long passes highlighted Green's day. He hit Niles Paul for 48 yards to set up a field goal. Two plays after he badly overthrew Mike Hays on a short sideline pass, he passed 72 yards for a touchdown to Will Henry.

Green said he was satisfied with his performance, but he believes the starting job is Lee's to lose.

"We all know that, just because he hasn't been here," Green said. "You've got to give him a chance to get in there and compete with us. This spring has really helped out everybody. You can see, we're all playing at a high level."

Watson said Lee will have to make up for lost time in preseason practices and that he can't assume he'll have an advantage over Green and Martinez because he started in 2009.

"He sees the young talent we have and what they bring to the table," Watson said. "Zac will bow up to it and compete. That's his nature."

Pelini said the play-calling would be basic, and that was the case except for two trick plays.

The Reds lined up in the wildcat formation, with Burkhead taking the direct snap. He threw quickly to cornerback-turned-receiver Prince Amukamara, who was engulfed by Pierre Allen and Terrence Moore for a 4-yard loss.

The White team's razzle-dazzle had a better outcome. Green threw a bounce-pass lateral toward the sideline to Mike McNeill, who fielded the ball and passed 31 yards to Paul.

"We gave each team a chance to make up a play of their own," Pelini said. "One worked, one didn't. We wanted to put Prince in there [on offense] and have a little fun with it.

Kid A
05-11-2010, 05:58 PM
I have mixed feelings about the Big 10 possibility.

Pros:

-It would be us making the first move, not reacting too late after Texas and OU jump ship to the SEC or something.

-Lots more money. Like at least $10 million more a year.

-While not a lot of obvious/traditional rivalries up there, we would probably be taking Mizzou with us and Iowa would be a fun series. And Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin would all be cool matchups every year.

-Dr. Tom isn't a big fan of the Big XII. He was lone dissenting vote to lock the league championship game into Cowboy stadium for the next three years. He has always felt Texas gets way too much power (which they do). In short, we would be getting out from under Texas' shadow. Granted OSU and Michigan are big boys too, but I'm not sure they run the league on the level Texas does (at least in Tom's eyes).

Cons:

-Different recruiting region. We've always depended big on Texas recruiting, which would probably take a hit by not playing there twice a year or being on TV in that region all the time.

-Loss of long running rivalries. In the case of a Big XII implosion CU goes to the Pac-10, and what remains of the OU rivalry might just be dead. The teams that needs to be really worried about all this talk are KU and K-State. Who takes them in (though KU basketball is obviously always a commodity)?

-Not sure I'm sold the Big 10 is an overall tougher conference (I'll take Texas and OU over OSU and Michigan in the last decade, with TT, Nebraska, K-State all fielding at least a couple formidble teams in that same stretch), but it's hard to imagine whatever division they put us in would be as easy as the Big XII North has been. Probably end up with Penn State and Iowa on our side (assuming they keep OSU and Mich together).

Anyway, really interesting to see how this plays out. I wouldn't mind seeing the Big XII man up and get stronger to avoid a break up (get TCU?). But if it's inevitable, I'd like us to be ones taking initiative. If we get offered a lot more money and the XII doesn't counter...we're going.

I think this article is the closest to the truth:

He says that the Big 10 never officially asks people to join, but they can suggest that a school apply to join, which would be voted on during their meetings on May 17-18. I'd put big money on Nebraska, Mizzou, Notre Dame, and Rutgers being teams that were encouraged to submit applications. If all four were to apply/join, they'd need to add another school to get to 16. If Notre Dame says no thanks I think they stay at 14.

Either way, I think the odds of this happening are pretty high. Any idea what the divisions would look like? I bolded the teams I think are a lock to be grouped together.

West: Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota, TEAM # 16 (Kansas? Pitt?)

East: Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, Indiana, Rutgers, Northwestern

McKid A you are right we can't sit and sink with the B12. The Texas recruiting thing is over blown a tad though. It's not like we steal many players from Texas. If they want a player they get them so we get the rest. The only issue with recruiting there now that I see could become a problem is the distance that parents would have to travel now to see games. At the same time though we would get way more games on national TV because of the Big Ten network deals.

-Lots more money. Like at least $10 million more a year.

Why is this? I thought us, Texas, and OU got a big portion of the Big 12 money but we would have to split more evenly in the Big 10. Wouldn't that be less money Nebraska or do they just make that much more money in the Big 10?

They have a crazy good TV contract going, especially with the Big Ten Network being pretty much national. Right now all the schools get $22 million a year I believe just from TV. I think we get like $11 million right now or something? Add in a Nebraska, Mizzou, maybe Syracuse, let alone Notre Dame...huge money.

As for the Texas recruiting, I've seen arguments both ways. Our recruiting numbers have gone way up there since the Big XII (almost as many players from Texas in the last 15 years as all our history before) so it has to be a real concern. Making this big of a move, though, and playing in what would be nearly an equal to the SEC in prestige along with an incredible TV package would not hurt our national image/exposure.

The rumor I've heard is that if they do get the Big Ten up to 16 teams they want to divide into four divisions of four. Kind of like a pro football conference. Makes sense, but it would be a sea change for NCAA football. Just as we've gotten used to Raiders, Chiefs, Chargers along with a mix of AFC every year, it would probably be Missouri, Iowa, Illinois with a mix of other Big Ten (16) teams during our conference play each year.

Also if they go to 16 or even 14 I think the math will be off enough that they'll finally change the name. ;) Rights to the Big 16 are owned by the Big 12 ironically. Maybe the Big North Athletic Conference?

Yeah McKid A is right the Big 12 doesn't have a TV deal while the Big Ten, Pac 10 and SEC all take in huge amounts of money from theirs.

As expected, it looks like the Big Ten will base the divisions on how historically competitive teams have been.

So we have:

Division 1: Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Minnesota

Division 2: Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois

And each team has a designated crossover rival for every year. Nebraska's will be Penn State.

On paper Nebraska got in the better side: Michigan is down, while clear top dog OSU is on the other half. But you factor in Penn State every year on top of Michigan, Michigan St, and Iowa, and you're looking at a solid slate.

But it gets better. There are still two slots open for a couple other cross division games. And in the first two years (2011, 2012) for Nebraska those teams are...OSU and Wisconsin.

It should be a lot of fun games, but this is defintily not a gentle introduction to the league. Not that we deserve one. The new kid should get matched up against all the big name schools. Hard to imagine not coming out of these years without at least a few losses, though:

The 2011 slate:

10/1 at Wisconsin

10/8 Ohio State

10/15 Bye

10/22 at Minnesota

10/29 Michigan State

11/5 Northwestern

11/12 at Penn State

11/19 at Michigan

11/26 Iowa

And 2012:

9/29 Wisconsin

10/6 at Ohio State

10/13 Bye

10/20 at Northwestern

10/27 Michigan

11/3 at Michigan State

11/10 Penn State

11/17 Minnesota

11/24 at Iowa

Martinez is getting a ton of hype...most of it based on quotes from other players after practice. He did look good in the spring game. My guess is a Lee-Martinez mix, ala Florida in 06 with Leak and Tebow. The freshman might be too talented not to play some, but the coaches will temper that by giving the veteran plenty of playing time too. Lee is healthy, and showed something promising in the Holiday Bowl. At least that's what I think would be the smart move.

But, if they want to go all in with T-Magic (or even Green, I guess) it will make these first couple games against cupcakes more compelling. Everyone loves a hyped freshman. But if we are serious about a national title run, the track record for freshman QBs is thin.

Obviously, Martinez was the story. Yeah it was a ****ty WKU defense, but he showed a knack for breaking big plays, and didn't seem phased at any point. Might want a couple passes back (especially in the 2 minute drill at the end of the 1st half), but he looked like a solid passer most the time. He's going to have some struggles against the Texas' of the world...but so would any QB on our roster. He looks and sounds like he doesn't get rattled by much. I'd be awesome if he is the real deal and we can look forward to having the same QB for 4 years. We shall see.

Bo ripped the defense after the game, and probably deservedly. They were fine in the 1st half, but they got run over in the 2nd. It's only week 1, but it seems obvious that we will miss Suh in the middle a lot. Losing our starting LBs won't help either. We should still be a good defense, but all this talk that we could be even better despite losing the best defensive player in school history is looking pretty silly. I'm still confident they'll be intimidating in a month or so, but it looks like the offense should plan on scoring more than 10 points a game this year.

Upgraded offense, downgraded defense in week 1. Not sure where that leaves us, but I'm excited to see what strides they make against Idaho...and of course the next week at Washington.

I think you nailed it McKid..... pretty much my take.

The one thing on offense that still needs some major work is the WRs holding on to the ball. There were a lot of drops last night. The RBs looked solid and really all three QBs looked decent.

Also, this Western Kentucky team will win some games this year, not saying they are a good team but they are not the worst team like they were last year IMO.

I wouldn't worry about the defense that much. I'm pretty sure we gave up more yards and such in last seasons opener. We also took some LB injuries that hurt some.

It's finally fun to watch both sides of the ball. When was the last time we could say that?

We could hang with them. This team could hang with anybody (they pretty much showed that last year, even without any offense). The question is if they can finish against anybody. I have zero doubt we can have a lead late in the 4th against any team in the nation.

What Nebraska has been incapable of in recent years is not choking at the very end. If they can get over that problem (or, hell, just rack up bigger leads early on) this team can be special.

I have a hard time seeing either OU or Nebraska going unbeaten given some of the flaws we've seen from them, but they should both be favored in every game the rest of the way. That said, they both need to start rooting for the other to win out.

The Big XII does not look to have many teams that are respected on the national scene (outside the Sooners and Huskers). Meanwhile Oregon, Boise, Alabama, TCU, and Ohio St are all looking like they have run-the-table potential. This could be a tough year for the Big XII champion, even if they go undefeated. The only shot at the BCS title might be if we get a battle of unbeatens in the championship that gets national attention.

Again, that scenario might be longshot given the up and down performance of both teams, but it would certainly be my dream scenario and a fitting end to the Big 8 rivalry. First, though, we need to prove we're the team that pounded Washington, not the one that sleepwalked to an ugly escape against SDSU.

Man, this was actually a rivalry that mean a lot to me growing up in Kansas surrounded by State fans. Took a lot of **** at school for being in red, but it was overall pretty fun. Geographically the nearest rival too.

Martinez, is the real wild card here (and probably in a lot of games moving forward). He showed against Washington he could make mediocre defenses look plain stupid. But, he was pretty lack luster (along with everyone else) in the SDSU game. I think he bounces back and puts on a solid showing against a good K-State defense.

On defense our weakness has looked like the running game, which would seem perfect for K-State. Pelini in interviews, though, seems to really not think the run D is an issue and that the gameplans were a large factor in allowing some yards early in the year. We shall see. He tends to tell the truth, positive or negative, so I lean toward thinking we will be able to handle them tonight.

I think people forget how much the D improved over the course of last year, until they were absolute monsters by year's end. I still doubt that we can quite match that level this year, but I don't see State getting more than 20 tonight. Big game to show where we are as conference play begins. I hope to see them show some dominance, but truthfully we should be happy to get out of Manhatten with a W however it comes.

Be interesting to see if anyone bothers to put the ball in the air. K-State will 1) want to avoid what is arguably the best secondary in the nation and 2) give the rock to arguably the best RB in the nation, so you would think they go that direction.

K-State comes in with the worst run D in the Big XII. The legs of Martinez, Helu, and Burkhead have been our best weapon so far. Could look a little like those 90s battles between great run attacks.

Yeah, October has been our bad month the last few years and this one is as tough as we'd have. Texas isn't a pushover, no matter how much of a slide they are in. OSU on the road has not been kind to us historically and they have explosive offense. Mizzou is the only other team in the North near our level, so that could be a battle.

We get out of this month unscathed...then I start worrying about where we rank. Having a championship game (hopefully against I highly ranked OU) gives us some help over Oregon and Ohio St who have no conference championship. That said, if they stay perfect it could be hard to leap them with most voters. Definitely keeping an eye on them, even if it is way too early.

Just about 90 minutes away, guys. Not sure what to think. I expect maybe a 10-14 point win, but if we jump early it could be an easy win. But, if we turn it over a couple times (something we are very capable of), and it's a dogfight. I really don't want to imagine going out on a loss to Texas this year.

As much as they've dominated us this decade, it is worth noting we are 4-1-1 against the spread the last 6 games. Now I'm not one for moral victories, but in almost all those games Texas came in with top 10 teams while we were unranked, major underdogs. If you look at it that way, we actually always give them one of our best games. We just choke it away at the end. Hopefully we can handle being the favorite and show we can kick the hell out of a team while it's down.

I really don't like how this coaching staff plays QBs. They need to pick one and stick with them. Martinez is really young and this last game was a learning experience. Even though he was playing bad there was at least the potential of big plays and a comeback with him in. All hope went away the second Lee was put in.

Penalties go 16-2 in favor of aTm, including complete bull**** PI on the game winning drive. Offense was pathetic, no doubt, but good god. Coming into this game no Big XII team had fewer penalties called against its opponents, and this will just magnify it. Partly our o-line's stupidity, but I'm about to buy into the Dan Beebe conspiracy theories.

Silver lining, this game really didn't matter in the grand scheme. We had a tiny tiny outside shot at the BCS title if we ran the table and lots of other things happened. As it is we need to beat CU on senior day to go to Dallas, which we should do anyway if we deserve to play for a championship. This team is good, but has not kept up the early season progress on offense. A trip to the Big XII title game would be more than good enough and give us a shot to achieve the season's primary goal: leaving the conference on top, middle fingers extended in the league office's direction. Getting by CU first will be no cakewalk though.

This is obviously not a confidence inducing prospect, but I'd love for him to prove some people (myself included) wrong this week. Defense is peaking like they have every year under Pelini and should hold CU under 20. Just need smart play from Cody and for him to connect on some passes. Congrats OU fans. Another tough championship game loss to swallow on this side. We've been to three Big XII title games in the last half of the decade, had outstanding defensive performances in all of them, but lost because of turnover prone offenses that couldn't cross midfield for quarters at a time.

Time to take a serious look at what is up with the offense. For years now we've looked good on that side against mediocre teams, but gotten completely shut down by teams with any speed or talent (i.e. OU, Texas, Texas A&M). We're in for a world of hurt if we can't establish something more dependable (or at the very least not fumble 50 times in a year).

Again, tough loss. They teased us with a big lead, they teased us with golden opportunities at the end to have a game winning drive. OU's QB showed his poise and growth and their defense stepped up.

You have to be ****ing kidding me. The Holiday Bowl (where we played just last year) vs. Washington (a 6-6 team we beat 56-21 earlier this year and will be meeting again early next season.)

Somehow Mizzou, a team we trounced and had the same record as (prior to the championship game) gets the Insight Bowl against Iowa, which would have been a great match-up. Christ, did this season end on some sour notes.

I think he will be a stud if he takes coaching and developes. I have also heard good things about the young guys. QB is one of the positions I'm not worried about. Receiver is a position I am very worried about.

The ironic thing is he rarely took Huskers while at Denver. He seemed more enamored with the SEC and Big12 South.

Why did you guys get kicked out of AAU?

From what I have heard a lot of that had to do with NUs emphasis on agricultural studies and lack of a medical school. The University of Nebraska at Omaha has the medical school.

A couple more weeks until Husker football starts up again. Can't wait to see what we have this year. If they can get a good offense, the team will be fighting for the division title and possibly the national title. This was said last year as well though. Hopefully Martinez can stay healthy this year.

The worst part is the B12 North NEEDED CU to get back to being a creditable team. Maybe there would have been more balance in the B12 and UT might not have got everything handed to them when they asked for it.

NU falling off didn't help any either but hell man at least we voted against UT.

We need a good dominate game in all phases to get momentum rolling for the rest of the season... hopefully Minnesota is the perfect team to start that up. I think the defense started to come together (finally) in that second half against Ohio St. and the offense is also on an upward swing. Would be great to get past Michigan and State and get another shot at Wisconsin.

So, bowl game aside (hopefully something around New Years against an SEC opponent) season is over.

I saw 2-4 losses coming in conference play this year, and looking back I think 9-3 is something the team should be proud of. Simply put, not a lot of pretty wins this year (and all three losses ugly in their own way) but they ground their way impressively at times through a brutal schedule in a new conference.

No Roy Helu + Martinez never looking quite healthy enough to have that extra gear that broke so many runs last year = an offense that was never close to as explosive as last year. The O was defined by Rex Burkhead, who carried the team on his back in almost all their conference wins. I love love love Rex, but I do hope they work the young guys (Abdullah, Green, Heard) in more next year, as their speed could bring back that score-from-anywhere-on-the-field element we were missing.

Martinez, despite losing the explosiveness, was much improved. I've never been as down on him as some Husker fans seem to get, and he really showed growth as a passer. Yes, the motion is godawful to look at, but his arm really carried the offense in several games. I truly think in the last couple years of his career here he'll continue to develop as more of a dual threat and become one one of the top QBs in the conference.

The defense in all three areas was a big step down from last year. The injuries on d-line in particular left us by the end of the season with poor run defense and zero pass rush outside blitzing. On the positive side, Dennard and David both looked like top 5 players in the nation at their respective positions. I think David, despite only being here 2 seasons, will be remembered as one of the best LBs to ever wear the scarlet and cream. For the Ohio St game alone he should be beloved.

So, most the year we were in the awkward spot of a grind-it-out offense being the stronger unit. Thus our best games were over fast and featured little scoring by either side (not unlike Denver!). The defense obviously has some ability - they showed they could absolutely shut down a non-mobile pocket passing offense. Even a pretty good one like Michigan St, who they nearly shut out. But, dear god, athletic QBs ate them alive. We should 1) be thankful we weren't in the Big XII this year and 2) be more than a little squeamish of what that D will look like next year with the best 3 athletes removed (Crick, David, Dennard).

I hold out hope that the secondary can continue its tentative progress. The d-line might be okay as well once they get healthy. LB...I just don't see any speed out there. Pelini has earned his reputation, but he'll need to get something out of young guys we haven't seen yet to have a rebound year in 2012 for the Blackshirts.

If you look at the first couple years of recruiting he had, they weren't all that great and I think that is catching up with us right now. That said, we showed we can hang with the top talent in the Big Ten like Ohio St, Michigan St (and I'd add Wisconsin next year when they lose Wilson). Pelini figuring a way to slow the bleeding against mobile QBs will be the key to taking the next step.

State's got a great team this year. If they can get by Texas (they always do) and West Va, could be lining up for a special season.

Nebraska is a team with no apparent speed at LB or on the edges of their defense. And not much pass rush. Bo benefited a lot from the recruiting of the prior staff, and coached it into one of the best defenses in the nation. Does not seem to have done as well in his own recruiting, though. At least we've got like 4 starting quality RBs that we can sometimes all play at once in that weird hybrid pistol formation?

In a down year in a down decade for the Big Ten, NU still might be a frontrunner for the Rose Bowl, with Ohio St ineligible. Probably got out of the Big XII conference and its basketball scores just in time.
