View Full Version : Another Bust in KC (Bell)?

The Kansas City Star reports Although the Chiefs indicated this week would mark LB Kendrell Bell’s return to contact, Bell was again held out of the contact portions of practice Tuesday. HC Dick Vermeil said he was unsure when Bell, who has a balky shoulder, would be cleared to play. “I anticipate Kendrell coming back,” Vermeil said. “I’d like to see him get involved right now. I don’t control that. The medical people do. It’s just when they feel he’s ready and he feels he’s ready.” Rookie LB Kris Griffin was in Bell’s spot at right outside linebacker rather than Keyaron Fox.

Wow, and all this time I've been getting told that Bell is 90% ready.
What was the word on him? Did he fail his physical in Pitt? If so, does anyone have a link stating this?

No. He also did not fail his physical in New York.
The Chiefs are just being cautious with him.

Q: How about Kendrell Bell? He practiced a little more today?
VERMEIL: “He was in the contact drills. He jumped into the goal line and short yardage work. Like I said, he needs just a few snaps a day to get the rust out.”

There's a very good reason for that. He does not have an injury.

Didn't Bells' back "lock-up" on him in the last month? I friend of mine (yeah KC fan, what ya gonna do???) said Bell has yet to participate in contact drills so today must be a first. He also said that he's not been in any preseason games and that it's likely that his shoulder is trashed. Sounds like the Star confirmed all that.
Bell is not a bust, he had a fine rookie season. He's just broken down and if somehow he gets on the field, given his hard-nosed style, he'll be back on the IR pretty quickly...KC was reaching, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Got this one from a KC fan on another board.
Today I listened to a radio segment about Bell's situation, so maybe I can clear this up for you.
First of all, Bell has told everyone that he's 100% (not just 90) and is ready to go, and has been for some time.
Like we've been saying, the coaches have simply been cautious with him, just like they have with Gonzo/Will Shields/etc.
Bell has an arthritic condition that he's dealt with since college. He's played through it every year thus far, and will continue to. He will see action in the last two preseason games, and be ready for the opener on Sept. 11.
Now he's 100% but can't practice or take contact? hmmm...

Good point. The Chiefs fans thought the 2003 defensive additions of Shaun Barber, Dexter McCleon and Vonnie Holliday would be the key pieces towards a Super Bowl run. At the time, none of them were even close to being in the top 25 percentile at their respective positions.

When it is all said and done nobody is really going give a #u@& about the Donks finishing second in the division for the 4th consecutive year but that is not going to stop a bunch of people spending a bunch of time talking about it. There is no point in that either but that is the great thing about this country and that is we all have the freedom to talk about what we want whether it has a point or not. OK Bob since this is a Bell Thread, lets move on to today. I see some waffling going on here with Vermeil:
Q: Do you think Kendrell Bell will get 20 snaps?
VERMEIL: “I don’t know yet. He may not get any snaps.”
Q: Oh, so he may not play?
VERMEIL: “He may not play.”
Q: Why? Was there a set-back today?
VERMEIL: “No. I don’t know if he’s ready yet to just turn it all loose.”
Q: You seemed more optimistic about it yesterday.
VERMEIL: “Yeah, because I liked what I saw on video tape. We just want to make sure he’s 100% ready in his own mind as well as physically.”
Q: Is there some doubt that Kendrell Bell won’t be ready for the opening game, or do you expect him to be out there?
VERMEIL: “I expect him to but we’re not going to put him out there unless he’s really ready. We brought him here to play and made a real commitment to him.”
Q: What do you need to see from him to be convinced that he’s 100% ready?
VERMEIL: “That he can play without favoring his old injury. As soon as we see that then we know he has confidence in it and go from there.”
Q: Has he re-injured anything since then?
VERMEIL: “No.”
Q: Do the doctors want him to be cautious; do you want him to be cautious?
VERMEIL: “I think a combination of everybody starting with us and Kendrell. A player knows when he’s really ready and when he’s not ready. Yesterday he jumped in there and he flashed around. You could see it. He has movement just like Derrick Johnson does and those guys are rare. But he showed some signs of not really wanting to use everything yet, just turn himself loose into the contact area. When we put him in the ballgame we want him to do that.”
Q: There was some question about his shoulder when you signed him – that it might not be 100%. Did he lead you on that it was and wouldn’t be a factor this year?
VERMEIL: “He passed our physical. Anyone who passes our physical I assume he’s going to be able to play.”

Q: "Is he a big puss, coach?"
VERMEIL: "Too early to say, but it looks that way."
