BRONCOS CLAIM S MARQUES ANDERSON OFF WAIVERS
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Tuesday claimed safety Marques (MAR-kus) Anderson off waivers, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. Anderson was waived by Oakland on Monday.
Anderson (5-11, 210 pounds) is in his fourth NFL season and has played 44 career games (28 starts), totaling 211 tackles (150 solo), six interceptions (140 yds.), 19 pass breakups, six fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. Anderson, who has scored two touchdowns on interception returns, was selected by Green Bay in the third round (92nd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft and has played for the Packers (2002-03) and Raiders (2004).
After Oakland acquired Anderson from the Packers on Sept. 3 in exchange for its fifth and sixth-round selections in the 2005 NFL Draft, the safety played 14 games (10 starts) for the Raiders. Anderson ranked fourth on Oakland in tackles with 72 (54 solo) while posting one interception (23 yds.), two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
The 26-year-old Anderson played all 16 games (7 starts) and started both of Green Bay’s playoff contests in 2003 to record regular-season career highs in tackles (78) and pass breakups (10). As a rookie in 2002, Anderson returned two of his four interceptions (114 yds.) for touchdowns and finished the year with 61 tackles (41 solo) in 14 games (11 starts).
A four-year letter winner at UCLA, Anderson played 46 career games (33 starts) for the Bruins and finished his career with 236 tackles (174 solo), eight interceptions, four sacks and 40 pass breakups. He was one of 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award (nation’s best defensive back) and a second-team All-Pacific-10 Conference choice as asenior.
Anderson was named a SuperPrep and PrepStar All-West selection at cornerback for Long Beach Poly High School in Long Beach, Calif., after posting four interceptions as a senior. Marques Anderson was born May 26, 1979, in Harbor City, Calif.

Shanny is prolly trying to get a scouting report on Oakland's new defensive packages this year and then he'll dump him in final cuts.

Yeah, because Oakland is expected to field a "Raven-like" defense this year that can win games on its own.

Someone needs to inform Al Davis that releasing every other safety on the roster will not make Derrick Gibson into a better player.
Anderson hits like a mother but can't cover for ****. The TE's in the division abused him last year. A good guy to have on the roster but not starter material IMO.
Still he can be a decent backup. I don't agree with the decision to release Anderson but whats done is done.

I could be wrong here but our new secondary coach may have coached him when he was a Packer.

Slowik, 51, most recently served as the Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator in 2004 and coached the team's defensive backs from 2000-03. He has eight years' experience as an NFL defensive coordinator, also working in that capacity for the Cleveland Browns in 1999 and Chicago Bears from 1993-98, and has coached five Pro Bowl selections.
It looks like he did so that may have something to do with it.

Way more likely that Oakland would exploit the guy (given the chance) than him giving us anything we could use. Gameplans change from week to week. Flaws in an individual player's game take much longer to iron out. Obviously Oakland feels they're well aware of Anderson's flaws and that's why they cut him. We probably picked him up because we have genuine interest in him as a player.

Yeah, but he knows the audibles and what type of playcalling the offense is going to be using. Remember Lynch in the SB vs the Faid... schemes may vary from week to week but the audibles remain the same!

His career stats aren't that bad. Slowik knows what he can do as well. While he isn't a superstar he has started in the NFL which is something. Still the guy does have 5 more career picks then Fergy.

Personally I liked Anderson. If he had a little more size he would make a good linebacker. He's a good pickup if you plan to have him in on obvious run plays... Goal line defense. There is no question that he's a hitter!

Attempting to polish previously highly thought of turds...
Taking a shot at drafting questionable character players...
Signing divison rivals waived players...
The Broncos have morphed into us...
I half expect that sawed off runt Shanahan to roll out of a 70's black Caddy with blacked out windows wearing a pimp black jogging suit and slicked back hair...
Anderson was very good in the box last season, but looked like he was running around with a Toyota strapped to his ass this offseason for whatever reasons...
Normally I'd wish him well, but considering where he ended up, here's to him waking up with a burning sensation in his pee...

i think the rule is the player who has been on the team the longest gets initial & last name, the player who's been on the shortest has to list entire name
i could be wrong though(i remember Fox mentioning it a few years back during a Cardinals game when the QB had his entire name on the jersey)

Do the audibles remain the same on every team from week to week? Maybe after getting boofooed in front of two billion people by John Lynch and Baby Gru the Raiders have decided its in their interest to shake things up periodically.

I have given my opinion that coverage safeties are the future. That's why I was hopefull about Browner. We should be able to pick Anderson's brain a little and if Slowik likes him, bring him in for depth, but if I'm Denver, I keep an eye out for some final cuts. I fully expect to see a couple OL come in for tryouts as the real hard cuts start surfacing. There are always some vets out there let go for the perennial "youth movement", and some draft choices that we might of had an eye on. Bring 'em in and workem' out and see if anything sticks. We should literally have a man in charge of that. Sundquist I imagine. He can bring in the retreads and rookie castoffs, the coaching staff can look at them and kick the losers to the curb. Works for me. The more you look at, the more likely you will find a keeper.

If you recall, Marques Anderson intercepted Jake Plummer in the 1st quarter of last year's game in Oakland and ran it back into Denver territory. Oakland kicked a field goal to take a 3-0 lead and then Denver scored 31 unanswered points in a laugher in the rain.

Some Highlights:
All the way up until camp I was their guy," the newest member of the Denver Broncos said Wednesday, "and for some odd reason, it just all changed."
The return of Derrick Gibson -- who missed all of 2004 with a shoulder injury crowded up the Raiders' safety field. Anderson, whom the team acquired after Gibson suffered the injury, was soon the odd man out of the mix.
"I asked for the release," Anderson said.
"You know, it's almost a relief," he said. "I'm ready to be a Denver Bronco, wear the orange and blue. We see the Raiders twice this year and that's one way that I can take a little frustration out."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
If he asked for his release from the fade then I like him.

I like Marques Anderson and watched him a lot in the many Raider games which are broadcast in Hawaii, and the guy was pretty consistent. He was fairly decent at coverage considering he had to run around all day while the opposing QB smoked a cigar and had all day to pick out a throw with that patehtic excuse for a D-line and linebacker corp the Fade had last year.
With our new D-line and linebackers he'll look much better at coverage, and the guy can really hit. He'll learn a thing or two from Lynch and Champ as well.
I cant think of a much better pick up from training camp cuts than a guy like this. I was getting nervous realiizing that Leseur was an knee sprain away from starting at safety this year. Its all the sweeter that he'll be more than anxious to give a debriefing on the Cholelands off-season and be itchin' to lay some lumber on the silver and black when they come to town.
Having been coached by Slowik it'll be snap for Anderson to get up to speed in a couple weeks.
