Secondary banged up for Colts game
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer
If the Broncos' secondary is looking to make a statement, albeit a preseason one, against their aerial nemesis Peyton Manning on Saturday night, they might have to do it at half strength.
Several of the Broncos' defensive backs were noticeably absent from Monday's workout, including star left cornerback Champ Bailey.
He has missed Denver's two preseason games and hasn't participated in a full practice in more than two weeks. Coach Mike Shanahan on Monday continued to label the injury as a "tweak."
Shanahan said there is no worry the injury has significantly worsened, although Bailey has said he has aggravated it. Bailey is expected to play Sept. 11 in the regular-season opener at Miami. Bailey has not missed a regular-season game in his six seasons. If Bailey practices this week, he may play against Manning and the Indianapolis Colts at Invesco Field at Mile High. Manning threw for 457 yards in a 49-24 victory Jan. 9 over the Broncos in the first round of the playoffs.
Joining Bailey on the sideline Monday were safety John Lynch (soreness), rookie Darrent Williams (knee) and cornerback Roc Alexander (hamstring). Alexander, who has been bothered by his injury for about a week, started practice but then was taken out.
Shanahan said he didn't think any of those injuries were serious. Sam Brandon took Lynch's place. Lynch is expected to practice today. Third-round pick Domonique Foxworth worked with the first unit in place of Bailey and Williams.
Also, tight end Nate Jackson (slight hamstring tear) likely will not play Saturday. He is expected to be back for the preseason finale at Arizona on Sept. 2. Defensive tackle Mario Fatafehi, who suffered an MCL sprain Aug. 6, was at practice Monday and is expected to fully participate Wednesday. Defensive end Courtney Brown, out since Aug. 4 with a dislocated elbow, is expected to be back next week and play against the Cardinals.
Rookie Brandon Browner's right broken hand likely will eventually land him on injured reserve. Running back Cecil Sapp (hamstring) and offensive lineman Tyson Clabo (ankle) also didn't practice.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shanahan said rookie running back Maurice Clarett (groin injury) is looking healthy and hasn't suffered a setback.
Rice to return
Shanahan excused Jerry Rice from practice Monday and today so he could tend to a family matter. Rice will return Wednesday and is expected to play against the Colts. With Rice out, Darius Watts, Charlie Adams and Todd Devoe are getting more practice time.
Plummer likes backs
Mike Anderson, Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne got extensive practice time Monday. Anderson still leads the competition, with Dayne and Bell performing well. The three combined for 188 yards on 34 carries Saturday night.
Quarterback Jake Plummer, who has backed Anderson all camp, likes the mix.
"I've been leaning toward Anderson, because he's a veteran and I've been with him," Plummer said. "But Tatum is doing a good job pushing him, and Ron Dayne is pushing him as well."
Footnotes
Lynch's hit on 49ers tight end Billy Bajema on Saturday night will be reviewed by the NFL. Lynch may not be fined because film shows he led with his shoulder and Bajema was running upfield. ... With Williams hurting, Adams may get more return chances against the Colts. He had three punt returns for 77 yards against the 49ers. ... Brad- lee Van Pelt remained the No. 2 quarterback and appears headed toward winning the job, although the determination likely won't be made for a week or two.

Wow...that was quicker than I expected for him. I hope they aren't rushing this guy. Shanny needs to treat him and Bailey like priceless antique china dolls IMO. In fact, I'd rest anybody not directly competing for a job whose banged up this week. Who gives a flip if they beat the Colts in preseason? We don't want them seeing our regulars much anyway...break out 4th team...let 'em see Cox, Babers, Brandon...nothing but rooks and new guys. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Pryce sitting on Peyton's head a few times for grins.

I agree, 27.
Dont take any chances. The first time DJ explodes through the line and drives Gayton WoManning's fat forehead into the dirt will be worth galaxies more than the result of the game. Keep Champ on the bench and anyone else who is suffering from something "minor", Darrent Williams included.

I agree. Every year, my preseason/camp analysis is the same:
Great camp/preseason: No/Min injuries.
Vets like Bailey, Brown etc don't have a huge need for preseason reps. It's good to hear the Brown's recovery is on track and really, it could have been a lot worse. At least he'll be able to play the Miami game, which I must confess, is one more game than I thought he would be able to play for us.

I think the Broncos need to test the second string guys and let them get a taste of what it's like out there. I think the Colts are going 0-4 in pre season like they did last year. I think the Broncos are going to fine on defense. I think the Broncos are going to win but the Colts are not going to showing anything.

Not a bad idea. I say we put in the 2nd string and run as many blind-side blitzes as they’ll let us get away with. :dunk:
I’m not too picky about who on the team gets their licks in on Payton.

Sounds like Clarett might be a go...If he can go and he has any brains he should want to play against the Colts D...Their run D so far this year looks every bit as bad as it has been the last several years. W.Dunn was running for 5-10 yards straight up the middle against them before being touched.

Right...I'd prefer seeing him planted like a daisy half a dozen times to a win...giving him something to think about come January. Something about his fresh-faced little prep school look that is just very annoying. And what kind of football playing dad names his kid "Peyton" anyway? Peyton is a name for a soap opera star...maybe a male tennis instructor at a Beverly Hills country club. hmmm...

But I guess its not too bad coming from a family where the Dad’s named Archie and the brother’s named Eli.
Peyton's better than "Jughead", even though that's more fitting.

The good Lord has a strange sense of humor when playing the Colts. In three years of playing them the only time we have beat them is with a healthy secondary. The other times, oh man! At least Peyton's OL looks worse on the interior than DEN at this point!

I agree with you completely but the facts are our guys are nicked up.
This is preseason. The only way you can win this particular game is if you learn something about yourself or about the Colts that you didn't know.
In poker you toss a few hands to see whose sitting at the table. If our defense is deep and wonderful then show me something. Champ isn't out there? Perfect. It's pre season. You cannot get revenge in pre season. All you are supposed to be doing is learning. You don't think our CB are going to improve during the season.

If a guy is hurt, he's hurt. I'm not big on the precautionary measure for this one game. If Champ doesn't play Saturday then he will go into the regular season having not played any preseason snaps at all because there is no way he suits against the Red Birds. Not sure I like the idea of Champ having no preseason at all, eventhough he is the Champ.

They don't announce that stuff, at least Denver doesn't. Denver's offense will play 2, maybe 3 quarters depending on how they do. If they look crisp it will be closer to 2 quarters. The defense seems to play a few more series. Perhaps they are expecting the defense to be on the field a lot this season.

I wouldn't call that an announcement or a proclimation of any sort. He just sort of says this is what we typically due... his usual casual candor. They were supposed to play into the 2nd quarter last week and left after two series because they accomplished what they set out to do (10pts on SF's D).

Trade him to DUH Bears since they cannot sign CURTIS Benson. Angelo is dumb enough to pull the trigger. Bears had A-train & let him go then draft a RB at #4 (Plain Stupid) then cannot sign him. They need a backup QB worse than we do thought Orton may come along but won't get the chance to start until they are 0-4 or 1-5.

Actually, it's number of plays like the pitch count in baseball. That is why the first string defense did wholesale substitutions on the SF scoring drive. The first team Offense got theirs in two drives, the "D" had to wait several more series to reach their playcount. They prescript certain plays that worked well in practice and others that need work in live situations. Its not really about playcalling a particular gameplan in preseason.

That's true, but I doubt they reached their number of plays on O, although I certainly didn't count them. The first drive was like 5 plays! They scored quick. They were supposed to play about 25 plays and they were in for 17.

i hear ya, but you also have to remember that our starters need to
get some cohesiveness before the regular season, and the best way to
do that is to play into the third quarter against live competition.
if guys CANT go for that game (the starters that do play likely WONT play the final week), then i can understand wanting them to at least take some snaps in the final game just to get back in sync.
of course i agree i dont want anyone RUSHED back before theyre healed to play in the preseason, but i also think if they ARE capable, then it is valuable to get some gametime.

Generally, in the 3rd preseason game, they give the first team the most work, into the mid 3rd quarter, then barely play them the last week to rest them for the opener. I'm starting to worry about Champ. I set him on the shelf if he hurt it again. Still have about 2.5 weeks to kickoff. Start Williams again. WTF are we playing the Colts again for? Every time, they play us at home in a meaningless game, and we have to go there when the marbles are in play.
