I was hoping he'd get a fair shot at the punting job but that idea died when we brought sourdough boy in. Now I just hope we don't lose him somehow!

And there is just as much time for him to show everyone why he is a 3 time pro bowl player. I get sick of people hoping and wishing for the worst out of players.

We have two Godzilla kickers. Darn it's going to be hard to cut down this year. How did we let Andre Davis slip thru our fingers? Ugh.

Wouldn't a player have to be in our hands to slip through our fingers? There was only a handful of teams asking about him and I didn't read Denver in any of the articles.

DAvis is better than rice/watts, and thats good enough to make him our 3rd WR. Watts is awesome at getting spereation, but cat catch, as we all know, DAvis catches the ball, and does both punt and kick returns pretty good.

I do understand why Shanny didnt go after him tho, we have so much comp here, i think he wanted to just leave as is for now. But thats all guess work, i cant really read minds.

I don't think anyone will think he's better than Watts in about 3 months. People are much too eager to throw this kid under the bus. He will get his hands straight. They weren't much of a problem in college; I suspect it's a mental thing he will overcome.

I hope he does overcome it, caz he is a man on a mission when he runs his routes but he just cant hang on. Im not throwing him under the bus, but right now DAvis is the better player, i hope ur right and watts proves to have the season lelie did last year after having a bad preseason

Can Davis block? I'd say that factor comes into every decision Shanny makes when looking at WR's.

Ernster will be good in 2 years, right now Sauerbrun is the punter & deserves the job(not that Ernster is a slouch at punting)

i'm more concerned about who our kicker will be in 2-3 years than Sauerbrun doing anything stupid :)

I don't know if he can block or not but I know he can catch it and run 99 yds for a TD.

Uh, how do you figure? Watts caught nearly twice as many passes as he did last season (31 to 16).

Because there is an inherent jealousy in some, that desire those who are rich, powerful, popular, etc. to fail. How many times have you heard someone say "If I made the kind of money these professional athletes make, I would be so squeaky clean..." I always call BS on that statement, because nobody really knows how they would act, given the same circumstances. I wish any player who wears the Orange and Blue the very best. I would even have to gulp really hard, but if tRAYtor Lewis came to Denver, I still would hope the best for him; because he is a member of the team that I am a fan of.

I've never seen Devoe catch 1 pass in the NFL (besides preseason). Has he ever been on an active roster?

Everybody, is talking of Ernster as a insurance against Sauerbrun.

But I see that Jason Elam is no spring chicken anymore. Is Ernster any good at Kicking Field goals and extra points?

AlienBronco
08-22-2005, 01:42 PM
Nevermind, I found some info on the Denver Broncos Team WEB page

Quote" He placed 19 punts inside the 20-yard line for the Lumberjacks while making 9-of-18 field-goal attempts (.500) and all 27 extra-point tries as the regular kicker, which moved him to third place on the school’s all-time points list (221). Ernster was named the National Special Teams Player of the Week by The Sports Network and CSTV as well as the Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for a strong performance in a win against Portland State. He made a 48-yard game-winning field goal in the contest with 12 seconds remaining, propelling Northern Arizona to a 21-20 victory. The kick was the first game-winning field goal for Northern Arizona with less than a minute remaining since 1997, and it ranked as the second-longest fourth-quarter game-winning field goal for the school since 1975."

So, he is able if need to! :yep:

That's a good point. Somewhere down the line I could see Elam pulling a hammy in a big game and we need Ernster to kick a FG...is he practicing field goals as well as punts though?

It would seem like a wise idea. Hitting 50% in college doesn't sound that great though. I wonder if he could benefit from NFL coaching in that area of if he's got the accuracy to do it at this level. Regardless...an emergency FG kicker is better than none.

He had one into the North Endzone that went to the 10 or 11. SF took posession on about the 35 on that one. Ouch. All in all I think he looked pretty good. I hate the idea of having 3 kickers, but get ready because I think its coming.

Elam kicked off 87 times last year and I doubt more than a handfull reached the end zone. If you figure that Ernster could make a difference of about 5 yards per kickoff, all the sudden carrying him as the 3rd guy doesn't look so bad...435 extra yards the defense doesn't have to defend.

I think the Broncs pretty much have decided to do that. The most likely gotcha would be that a key player gets a fairly minor injury that will keep him out for the first couple of games and Broncs need to keep someone at that position as insurance.

Ah, all criticism of the rich, powerful, popular, etc is rooted in simple jealousy.

What about when famous people criticize other famous people?

Is TO jealous of Jeff Garcia?

Does Spike Lee secretly wish he was Tarantino?

These rappers who bash each other constantly (when they're not shooting each other), all about jealousy, right?

Or, perhaps, you can be an asshole, who's worthy of criticism, no matter what your Q rating or bank account says.

The Germans have a word called Schadenfreude. Its defined as a malicious satisfaction in the misfortunes of others.

I've always been surprised that there is no English translation because Schadenfreude is such an integral part of modern pop culture.

I think we love it so much that we're ashamed on some level. That's why this culture is so ready to give out second and third chances to almost anybody. The concept of public disgrace has changed dramatically. Its a temporary condition now, especially if the offending party shows contrition, or if they're perceived as special because of athletic or musical talent.

Everybody keeps saying Ernster would be the THIRD specialist, but I beg to differ: Mike Leach is STRICTLY a long-snapper. I know Leach is seeing a little time at TE, but he's nowhere near their 3rd stringer - Patrick Hape.

I think it's inconceivable they'll keep 4 specialists. HOWEVER, Jason Elam - and Sauerbrun for that matter - are getting up there, so why not Ernster to the practice squad? (At least until Todd's next DUI.) BTW, an NFL Practice Squad is not a bad deal for a rookie Lumberjack.

Yo, SLAP - I agree w/ your Schadenfreude definition EXCEPT: I don't understand it to be "malicious," really, just more of a quiet inner enjoyment of other's failures and misfortunes. BTW, there's no English translation for "burrito," either, but it's managed to carve out a pretty good space in pop culture ;-)

Hey, maybe I just don't get it, but I have ALWAYS WONDERED why the same guy can't Kick and Punt! I mean, they're both kicking, right? It's not rocket science! According to everything I've ever heard, the kickers do very little at practices, anyway.

Hey! I can drive a car . . . but I CAN ALSO DRIVE A TRUCK! Does that make me special?

The reason for this lies in another question... Are you the BEST car AND truck driver in the world? Are you in the top 10 in both categories? How bout the top 32?

If there was a guy out there who was in the top 32 in both Kicking AND Punting, you can be damn sure he'd be pulling in big bucks from some team.

I guess that's why they're called SPECIAL-ists, then. But what about Mike Leach? Can't ANYBODY "hike" the damn ball back 15 yards to save a roster spot? Lepsis? Nalen? Myers? Hape? I guess I just don't get that "long-snapper" stuff either . . .

I guess Mike Leach must be in the top 10 in the world at quickly hurling a football thru his legs and past his butt?

Boy, that's some way to make a living!! I will say, though, Leach is REALLY getting after it on coverage this pre-season!

Teams have been traditionally very leery about giving any one guy both duties. I think the prevailing opinion is you'll totally rat****ed if the guy takes an injury because you lose both specialists at once.

I know injuries to kickers are rare, but cheap shots can happen. Ask Dan Reeves.

This is really the point... Leach is in the top 32 at quickly hurling a football thru his legs and past his butt while making sure the 330 lb nose tackle directly in front of him doesn't break through and make a pretzel of his punter before the ball is away, then he is expected to recover from that activity very quickly and contribute on coverage. Might seem simple on the surface, but when it comes right down to it... I couldn't do it, could you?

Best thing that can happen to a long snapper is for nobody to mention his name all season. The only time those guys get any publicity is when they screw up in a big situation.

Well, no, I probably couldn't do it - although I am quite adept at getting a variety of things past my butt :strong:

I would just rather see Palepoi or Sykes or Clabo or Devoe make the team than Leach
