View Full Version : College football eh?

Right, someone could do a new football fan a huge service.

I never thought I'd like the NFL, but when I moved from Scotland to Fort Collins I discovered it is awesome. I LOVE sports, my next two tasks are to get into hockey and college football (NCAA? is that right?).

Hockey seems reasonably simple, basketball is pretty good (it's been reasonably popular over the pond since the Orlando Magic (shaq) Phoenix Suns (Barkley) and the Bulls) and I LOVE FOOTBALL!

I have since moved to Boulder (the wife wants to be a doctor or something) and I have a friend in Denver who loves CU, so it seems he'll be coming here and crashing for the games.

Now, my brother in law says college football is completely different, shorter, not allowed to hit as hard and all kinds of stupid rules that make it suck. Now he normally talks crap so I take it with a pinch of salt but I imagine there must be some differences right (he probably just was too drunk to list them and thus made stuff up...)?

Also, how does the season work? Like, in comparison to the NFL - 4 pre-season games, 17 week season, 16 games, 8 4 team leagues, NFC/AFC, North/south/east/west, then wild card, then 1st round, then 2nd round then AFC/NFC championship then superbowl, then pro-bowl.... I think, only one season under my belt guys...

How many leagues are there? when does the season start/end, what's the heismann trophy? who decides who gets into the draft and where they place (how did tom brady get into the 7th round? who's F-up was that?) Whats CU's ranking? Are they any good? I've heard of Notre Dame and USC, and the Rose bowl and Orange Bowl... is that right?

God, so much I don't know... if anyone can help I would hugely appreciate it, but I understand it's a huge ask!

Thanks.

P.S. I have seen Rudy...

Wow...where to start...

The Heisman Trophy is given to the "best college player" in the country...supposedly. It's mostly given to players at the skill positions on offense and ignoring defensive talent, in my opinion.

A season is between 11-13 games, depending on if you go to the championship game in your conference.

In college, you only need one foot in bounds to be a legal catch. You have to have two feet in bounds in the NFL.

College football depends on poll rankings to determine who goes to the national championship game. The top 2 teams at the end of the season are supposed to be in the championship game, although there has been controversy in the past about who the top 2 teams are in a given year. There's no playoffs, like in the NFL.

That's just the beginning. This forum should be more active once the season starts in September, so keep checking in here. You'll get it, eventually...

Dag your questions would take pages to answer!!! The best thing you can do for yourself is go and lurk around CBSSportsline.com or ESPN.com. Find college football and just look around. You'll find all the different conferences and the schools in those conferences. Since you're new here I'll point you in the right direction. Pay close attention to UT (UofTexas) this year. They have about 7 future first round picks on their team right now. They have a QB that will probably start the season off first or second in the preseason Heisman Hype.

Most people you find will have one favorite school and that's who they'll watch and route for and nobody else. Personally I like to watch every school I can. For example, I've never been a big Ohio St. fan but I watched a few games last year and was happy I did. I now know that Ginn Jr. is one of the most electrifying players in the country... you'll see him soon enough! Same goes for Memphis and RB DeAngelo Williams. I guess I'm trying to say that it's okay to be a fan of college football in general and to watch players as much as certain teams. You may end up enjoying it more that way and the more you watch the more you learn.

So you know the big conferences in college are the Pac-10, Big 12, Big 10, ACC, SEC, and to a lesser extent now the Big East. The MAC is a conference that is up and coming.

Teams to keep an eye on this year and watch if you can: Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech (fun passing game), Ohio St, Miami (SoCal will tell you more, player to watch his Hester), Memphis, Bowling Green, USC, Minnesota, Boston College, NC St, Michigan, Florida, and last but not least Tennessee. All of these teams will more than likely have a player that gets drafted in the first round of next years draft. You'll see those guys as you go... some schools (Ohio St, Texas, Tennessee, Miami, and USC have more than one that probably gets drafted in the 1st).

Hope this helps... I'm probably rambling but too many buds will do that to a person!

Later on!\

Especially pay attention to Texas on September 10th, when they get their asses beat by Ohio State.

Could happen... OSU has the LB's to spy on Young... but I doubt it will happen!

Ohio State has the LB's to knock Vince Young out of the damn game, or just try to make him throw an accurate pass would be just as good.

You know what would rock? If your GF was so impressed by Frank Gore's 9 YPC against the Broncos that she also adopted Miami as her team along with Michigan. :~ohyah!:

Whats CU's ranking? Are they any good?

Unranked, but close to the top 25. I think SI had us 24th. Now, remember, this is from a CU homer, but you should try following the Buffs for a year. Since they're the local team, you'll hear a lot more info about them than other teams. Go to a few games at Folsum. If nothing else, you'll love the stadium. It's absolutely gorgeous.

As long as you don't cheer for Nebraska, you should be fine. ;)

CU defense will be tough. QB has a great head on his shoulders. The rest of the offense is short on experience. Best kicker in the country.

Our defense is going to surprise some people this year. Unfortunately, I think our O is too -- with how bad it is. I blame our OC for that one.

How's that Saul?

BTW, how are the Wildcats looking this year?

By the way... I just got my ticket for NUs first game. It will be interesting seeing all the new players and how they fit in. IF they can gel as a unit they could make a push for the big 12 north this year.

I knew I'd get your attention.

BTW, even Kansas could make a legitimate push for the Big XII north. That said, IMO, it's Iowa State's to lose.

I'm excited about K-States "new" defense. Much more speed, much less injuries. Injuries really hurt us last year on defense. Look for the ole Lynch Mob to rise to power again.

Offensively, i'm worried about the O-Line. Got loads of young, inexperienced talent, but its just that.

QB, Allen Webb. Write it down.

If you can get me a ticket. ;)

I'm going to Marshall for the KSU - Marshall football game. I might go to Iowa State (cheap tickets). Can't afford all the roadies.

Whoa.

Cheers for all the replies!

Can see Folsom field from my deck (4th July was awesome!) and we're getting an observation deck built on the roof so even if I can't get tickets (tricky? easy?) I'll still be able to hear it!
WIll def follow CU, the wife's a grad student there and it's so close, it just makes sense! (and I HATE Fort Collins so never CSU...)

I like this guy.

Friends don't let friends go to CSU

Tickets are not to hard to come by, to bad you missed out on getting student and spouse tickets on the cheap. That's a steal.

It's official per Snyder. Webb will get the nod. I'm psyched about proving the naysayers wrong by rebounding from last year to have a great season.
