Chiefs | Gonzalez Pinky is Broken
Tue, 16 Aug 2005 20:12:51 -0700
Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez (finger, foot) actually has a broken pinky. "Now he's got the broken finger with a splint on it. But we mainly (want) to keep pressure off that foot. He still gets a good physical workout without taking the physical pounding driving off and blocking. He's very tough. He has no limitations," said head coach Dick Vermeil. Despite the injury, Gonzalez caught two touchdown passes late in practice Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Aching to play
Gonzalez shrugs off latest injury, a broken finger
By ELIZABETH MERRILL
The Kansas City Star
RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The conversation today, just before the cafeteria Swiss steak and steamed rice, is about quantum physics. Tony Gonzalez is reading another book and getting deep. He’s thumbing through The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel. This guy Haanel, supposedly, inspired Bill Gates to leave Harvard and start Microsoft.
Surely he can help Gonzalez channel the pain that shoots through his right hand and left foot.
“I’m interested in what makes people tick,” Gonzalez said, “and what makes myself tick.”
Nobody can really figure out Tony G. He’s a reality TV star who doesn’t have a television in his dorm room. He’s a training-room junkie who’s stretching for a catch in the end zone.
Just when it looked as if Gonzalez was ready for a healthier 2005, Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil broke the latest injury news early Tuesday: Gonzalez has a broken pinky finger. With two fingers taped together and a bandage that resembled an oven mitt, he practiced again Tuesday afternoon, referring to a chapter in another book he’s reading in his 11-by-13 dorm room.
It’s How to Be Like Mike, a biography on Michael Jordan.
“This is the NFL,” Gonzalez said. “If you can’t play with pain, then this isn’t the game for you.”
Without a high tolerance for pain, it’s doubtful that Gonzalez would be a six-time Pro Bowl tight end. Or catching two touchdown passes as he did in Tuesday’s late practice. Gonzalez made history last year when he became the first NFL tight end to catch 102 passes in a season. Nobody knew how much he was hurting — that he did it with a loose fragment in his foot that was caused by a stress fracture.
Offseason surgery was supposed to rid him of the pain, but Gonzalez still feels it when he practices during training camp. In some ways, maybe it’s good that he’s only working out once a day. Gonzalez never believed a team needed five hours of two-a-days during camp to develop chemistry.
Especially the Chiefs. The offense has been together for four years now, roughly 100 days in River Falls, so it’s not as if Gonzalez has to worry that Trent Green isn’t going to find him on a deep route or that Willie Roaf is going to forget how to block.
And when Gonzalez is taking a practice off, he’s not exactly loafing.
“Tony Gonzalez is always working out even if there’s a period where he’s not working with the team,” Vermeil said. “I’d rather have him with the team, but I know what we have to do to prevent a prolonged problem with the foot.
“Now he’s got the broken finger with a splint on it. But we mainly (want) to keep pressure off that foot. He still gets a good physical workout without taking the physical pounding driving off and blocking. He’s very tough. He has no limitations.”
Vermeil might have winced Tuesday afternoon if he saw his team superstar on the stairs outside the cafeteria, horsing around with his buddy Jason Dunn. Inside the lunchroom and the tight-end meetings, they talk about the meaning of life and the political musings of James Carville. Outside they joke about one owing the other money and chase each other like schoolboys.
Dunn is out because of back spasms, and their time on the sidelines is kind of like group therapy. Gonzalez had a what-next feeling when he grabbed his finger in pain during the first half of Friday night’s preseason game at Minnesota; Dunn had a whatever moment when he was injured from a teammate pulling on his jersey during practice.
“Tony wants to get better, and he’ll push that,” Dunn said. “That’s just like me. But we also understand that you need rest to get your body straight. You don’t want to be behind the eight-ball early. It’s not fair to the team to go out there hurt and not be your best.”
Dunn, at least, brought a TV to River Falls and has caught Gonzalez’s reality show called “Super Agent.” He ribs his buddy about how his voice sounds different on TV. A couple of assistants walked by Gonzalez earlier this week and wanted to know how the series ends.
Gonzalez smiled and kept walking. They’d have to keep watching.
“He doesn’t fit the stereotypical athlete,” Dunn said. “I know Tony, and when he’s at home, he’s at a Borders or sitting at the library. We talk about a lot of things, life in general. Our ultimate goal is to be the best man possible, and that’s on and off the field.”
For now, for once, Gonzalez would settle for being a healthy man.

We'll see how effective he is with a broken finger the first time he has to rumble with a LB off the line of scrimmage in run blocking or get past him across the middle.

a broken pinkie is someting to be dealt with for a TE. It doesn't sound like he will miss any time, but it's still something to content with. If catches a ball akwardly, that could be the end of his season.

Pretty sure this will heal before the regular season starts...
Anyway, I'm not concerned. Gonzalez caught 102 balls with a stress fracture in his foot last year.

Tony G better not miss any time for this, I was a damn WR and played with a broken finger before, then again I wasn't making millons of dollars which gave me the right to be a primadonna and sit out games for it.

Best hope so, BOB. Considering he is your best threat in the passing game, really because QUitterson has a decent catch every couple of games and then disappears, you best hope the ONLY consistent guy you have in the passing game is in there.

Kennison had 1,000 yards and 8 TDs. Shut up.
Really, WTF? The Chiefs have killed everyone in the passing game 3 years running now.

Good for Gonzo.
Hope he cant ever catch another pass and I hope Dick Vermeil is crying about it.
And I hope Bob, crazyhorse, Zach, Saul, and ROY all have that sinking feeling in their heart knowing that without Gonzo, teams dont have anyone but Priest to worry about.
Whats that sound?
Oh, the door slamming on the Chiefs chances at a superbowl for another 40 years.

Ok, I guess I found it:
Noun 1. corn liquor - whiskey illegally distilled from a corn mash
bootleg, moonshine
corn whiskey, corn whisky, corn - whiskey distilled from a mash of not less than 80 percent corn
Apparently the mash is what you get the squeezin's from to make shine.

My god, you mean the offense scored in a practice? I mean that NEVER happens in Denver, right? Plummer hasn't thrown a SINGLE touchdown pass this august in camp? :pfbbt:
