View Full Version : Khan's Camp Report 8/16: Dropped Balls

Hey Guys. Khan here just back from camp. I found a new favorite place. I stood behind this tall white tarp poster thing today and it saved my skin from the skin. Just in case I wore a hat and sunscreen, but you have no idea how thrilled I was to find that stuff.

I'm going to try things a little different today. I wrote down things I noticed play by play rather than doing things by each possition. If it sucks I'll do it the old way tomorrow. Lets get started.

When I first arrived they were finishing up blocking drills. I saw the last drill where it looks like Carlisle made a solid block and foster missed his. I don't udnerstand the technique completely so maybe it was a missed assignment by Carlisle. Engleberger was getting high praise from Jacob Burney. Pryce always seems to be needing things explained to him. I don't know if that's good or bad.

After the few line drills I saw, they went to strictly run drills with the receivers working the other field. I'm glad because both run attack and defense looked weak last game.

Jake had a good hard count on a run for anderson up the middle that faked the defense out a little and allowed for better blocking to form. Anderson ran for a few. Ekuban was splitting time with Coleman on the end possition usually occupied by Brown. Coleman got pancaked on a play up the right side.

Bell and Anderson shared time on the first team with Dayne running on the second and Q on the third.

Nick ferguson had several nice tackles on Tatum bell specifically. He seemed to close on him really well and even gave him a loving hit. It looked like the other blocks were right but Ferg just closed and made the play. Lynch only played a few snaps but put laid one of his charateristic hits on Tatum to put him on his back. Safeties were making most of the early run stops.

Terry Pierce closed and put a nice tackle on Anderson when they ran the second defense against the first offense.

Q made a nice move to shake Curome Cox and get up the side of the field.

Dorsett Davis really attacked the holes today. On this one play he collapsed the hole and stuffed Q up the middle. I just don't think Q is a between the tackles kind of player, though.

Anderson had a fumble I think, I couldn't tell because a spider had landed on my ear and I freaked and batted it onto another guys' hat. All I know is there was yelling, and "oooo" from the crowd and when I looked over the ball was being scooped up off the ground by the defenders.

Dayne made a nice move that he broke to the outside for a decent gain.

Next more 11 on 11.

The first play from scrimmage Walls was playing off Rod and he did a quick comeback and beat him for a few yards.

Next they ran a toss play to Tatum. He caught it high and akwardly and ran before adequately securring the ball. No Fumble, but it had me worried. Lynch tackled him after a nice run (probably because he took off immediately rather than securring the ball.)

Anderson caught a pass for 15 on a PA pass where he released up and then out. Wilson and Williams were closing on the coverage but were beat.

On the second team drill Davis broke through for a sack on a five step drop back. Looked good and really got off the ball well.

First team ran a quick count and immediate toss to Tatum who cut back to pick up some yards. Engleberger tried to one arm tackle on the cutback, so I don't know if he would have tackled him or not. It was a decent gain.

Tim Stuber put a nice block on Raylee Johnson keeping some room clear.

Mauk ran a PA boot and Pierce came in on a blitz and would have nailed him. They always finish the play even when they would have been "sacked". He tossed it deep and got Lelie down field for a big gain. Lelie caught just aobut everything and he ran a lot of different routes. He seems ver confident out there.

Kannell made a nice pass to rice for a decent gain.

Q hesitated behind the line on the next run play and got swallowed up pretty quick.

Foxworth dropped an int that hit him right in the nubmers. The receiver, Adams I think, fell down right before the throw and the pass tagged him in the 22. Dropped int.

Jake threw a pass for Stephen Alexander but it was awful and both the corner and the safety should have intercepted it. They didn't.

Rod dropped a medium range pass down the left sideline with Walls in coverage that he should have caught. You could tell it bugged him because he was swearing about it.

Gerard Warren batted down a Jake pass that he should have caught himself. He batted it up and caught it but it slipped thorugh his fingers. The guy is excellent about swatting down passes at the line. He's had at least one every practice. If I was coaching, everytime a receiver or defender dropped a pass/int, I'd make them go immediately catch ten balls on the ball machine. That's just me though.

Lelie caught a nice medium pass across the middle despite bobbling it.

They ran a LOT of draw plays with Van Pelt. Sometimes the D played it well, generally they didn't. He needs to be better about protecting himself. He protects the ball well, but sometimes he tries to do too much and he can get hurt that way.

Dorsett Davis came through fiercely on the next play to force a a bad throw. It wasn't an it but it was too soon a pass to Stephen Alexander on a slant that was missed.

Rod redeemed himself with a nice deep pass, toe-touch catch on the sidelines for a big gain. Bailey on coverage.

It was a Ceti-Alpha V spider! You should have caught it & saved it for Kirk or Bob who ever pisses you off 1st!

One thing I noticed about PSG1 was...no effing Turnovers...if this team wants to win they need to take the ball away often.

They ran a quite a few different rush formations. They would attack from the inside, outside, and sometimes stunt. It was very interesting seeing them attack in so many different ways and formations.

Next: Redzone work

First play off, Mike rips it in for a TD. He put a little juke move on to fake out the tackles.

On a perfect PA boot, Jake threw incomplete to Alexander on perfect coverage.

Third attempt mike blasted up the middle but looks like he would have been stopped short of where he needed to be.

Next play they ran a Fullback blast play that no one on the defense bit on and Kyle Johnson was stopped dead.

Next Tatum ran up the middle and was stopped dead.

Next was a false start and so after moving back five they handed off to Dayne who had the ball stripped in at the line. Not sure who had possesion at the end.

A good rush/bad protection forced an early throw by BVP that was errant and out of bounds. Karl Paymah ran to try and make the pick anyway but it was too high. It was good to see him attack the ball like he did.

The next play Van Pelt gunned the ball to 83 in the endzone for a touch that looke a little like "The Drive's" Td catch where Leach rolled under the ball in a coruched possition and caught it on his knees. - Yes Leach is on the second team no I'm not Saying BVP is like John Elway. The play looked similar.

Dayne ran out to the right side for a nice touch. Good to see a touch after a fumble.

Goaline punts drills -

Lepsis was practicing long snapping today. After a few practice snaps, the special teams met to work on goalline punt drills. You'll be happy to know that Shanahan was personally overseeing the practice and making comments. He also wasn't very happy with a lot of it until the end.

Mike Anderson was the caller and did a good job ammending the formation to pick up the attack.

First Punt is out and goes 60 yards landing somewhere near the 40 with Bailey returning.

Next one bounces to the 35. Blocking looked sloppy and downfield coverage was very urgent.

Next one was a miffed snap that was high and left. He got it off fast as it went to the 45. It was a lot higher, though, so coverage was able to get down field in time.

Next one had a smoother realease with the coverage down field looking so-so. Then Ronnie Bradford was yelling at everyone. Then the place got silent because Shanahan started chewing out BJ johnson for "going through the motions." Everyone was talking about how that must suck for everyone in Dove Valley to hear the head Coach chew you out. I was pleased because after that every played with more intensity. Until a snap was botched going over the upright for a safety. They did two more drills and they looked much better. At least they are aware of it. Sauerbrun was never blocked.

After the last snap they had the whole team huddle up. Shanahan was talking to them and I'm willing to bet it was about Special Teams, though I couldn't hear. Then they broke for seven on seven work.

Lelie was nailed by Plummer on a crossing pattern with protection looking sufficient.

Van Pelt threw across to his dumpoff guy in the flat but Jashon Sykes played it perfectly closing for almost an int and certainly a tackle for a loss. Shanahan openly praised him for "playing smart".

BVP hit Rice (back on the third team) for twelve.

Mauk dropped back and launched what appeared to be an overthrown ball for Devoe. Everyone thought it was too deep but devoe closed at the last seconds and caught it for a 50 yards.

Mauk threw a nice quick pass to Leach the next play for 8 yard gain.

Plummer hit Alexander across the middle but DJ played it well and it was dropped.

Louis green broke up a pass to Patrick Hape.

Myers had a nice play knocking a pass down at the line. The starters are really good about puting their hands up to deflect passes at the line.

Putz ran an in then out pattern that Plummer got him on for a 22 yard pick up. Zone coverage with Walls closing.

BVP ran a draw play that he got 40 yards from. I'm glad we don't play Michael Vick this year because the defense was scrambling to catch him.

The next play Davis closed on a roll out right play against Plummer where the coverage down field was so good he had to throw it away.

My favrote play was a forced drop by Darrent Williams where as the ball was being caught, Williams laid a sick hit on the receiver and he dropped it. Lynch would have been proud. Darrent makes some gambling mistakes but by the end of practice he was one of the few guys out there that was not showing signs of fatigue or boredom. He gave it his all all practice and you could see the desire for him to do better when someone beat him. I really like the kid.

Lelie ran a deep route that was a little underthrown by Plummer. Walls was right there, but Lelie quickly cut in, leaped and caught the ball and cut back and the two quick changes of monentum made Walls stumble. It would have been a touch.

A screen pass to Dayne was shut down from backside persuit. The D line just played it well and didn't bite very hard.

Ferg dropped a sure int from an errant pass. It really had me upset that the defense couldn't keep their hands on the ball.

Q ran for a nice big gain moving inside the blocks. He seemed a lot quicker today.

BVP ran some plays from the shotgun. They weren't very effective. Chuckwurah came in on a sack on one of them. He managed to tag Luke but he fell and dropped the ball.

Ok general thoughts next.:

Dorsett Davis looked really good. He had good push and pocket collapsing. The Tight Ends caught a ton of passes. The pocket folds reasonably well. Jake threw a few balls bad, but they weren't bad in terms of target choices but more in terms of mechanics which can be polished. He was good about throwing the ball away when things got messy. They thew a lot at Van Pelt today and I think its good. they are trying to "break him in" I think and you'll see lots of different plays this weekend. You will all have to have good reports because I have to close Saturday and so will miss the game.

I didn't see Meidator today but we had no way of hooking up so hopefully Mediator I'll see you tomorrow, and we can merge our brain power for tomorrow's report.

He dropped on across the middle but it was way overthrown and he tried to one hand catch it. Other than that, he looked ok. He didn't get a lot of passes, it was mostly the TE. As I said he ran with the first team again so that says something.

A couple things that stood out...Lelie sounds like he's in great form and could actually be a Pro Bowler this year...Mauck should be the #2 QB over BVP... and this Todd Devoe guy sounds amazing...I mean if he's closing in on balls that are overthrown to him, then he could have a bright future with this team...

I think our offense is going do great (considering) but they'll be streaky. If the OL takes a hit we don't have anyone in the second tier that is pushing anyone.

I think the starters themselves are nicked up, (Lepsis) running out of gas, (Nalen) or should be on second string (Cooper). It bothers me that Foster isn't dominating at this stage of things. I was expecting one of the OL FA pickups to actually be worth something.

I am looking at the depth chart and can say safely on paper it doesn't look that bad but everything I am hearing in camp is saying there is a problem there that is going to show up later in the season when the guys are banged up and half the season is gone.

I actually agree. As I was writing it, I was thinking "This is actually kind of lame." It's not as detailed as I like. Tomorrow I'll just look at general possitions and players again rather than trying to get each and every play down. I actually didn't see as much as I usually do because I tried to follow each play rather than looking at the guys I wanted to look at.

Its probably just you.
Safe bet - I’m looking for the D to be the solid side of this team.
The offense looks pretty good considering how very young the season still is. But the problem there is if we sustain any key injurys. Other than at RB, if anyone of the solid offensive starters goes down you can also watch all those 12-4 forecasts go down the drain.

We struggled ALL last year with that. What bothers me is that the defense isn't getting the picks in practice, in pre season and if I close my eyes... nope. I can't even visualize it. I still see "whirled peas" though.

I am a little confused on what reports from camp make you think that Mauck should be the number 2 QB? Everything that Kaylore and the other articles I have read are talking up BVP. Since I don't really follow college football all that much and I am not from the area, I am not biased one way or the other about BVP. I am just wondering what makes you say that Mauck should be ahead of him?

REP!

I have a feeling that Shanny may try the 2 QB system again & move both Kannel & Mauck down to PS (I say both in case someone claims Mauck & he does not want to match offer). If Jake & BVP are healty I bet he uses 3rd QB slot for Ernerster to kickoff. That is what I would do, you can always move a qb backup. Rules now allow 8 players on PS, having 2 QB's there that know the system would help if Injury bug bites (thought we would probably be screwed either way...)

Who is their starting RB? Or who started in the PS game? Two of their guys had a 4.5 ypc and a 5.3 ypc. I just got to watch the game last night when I got in from work, and on Houstons first drive, they ran the ball pretty good. Atleast IMO they did.

WElls had 15 yards on 3 carries against our first team defense for 5 yards per carry...again not steller defense.

Four straight stuffs on the goal line doesn't count as "stellar defense"? ???

When you step up on the 1 yard line and keep a RB out of endzone on 4 consecutive plays you are shutting down the running game. Not one yard on four straight... I'm having a hard time biatching about my boys run stopping ability... couple that with the fact that G-Money wasn't playing, CourtDawg wasn't playing, and Trev hadn't seen live action in a long long time!

Yes I remember the stuff at the goal line. That is what I would like to see happen alot this season if Denver is put in that position. But leading up to that point, Houston had no problem running against us.

Now Denver on the other hand seemed to have all kinds of problems running the ball. Anderson and Bell both looked terrible. Well not so much them, but the Oline just didn't get it done.

Broncoman13

I thought the D was kinda soft as well but i'am not going to put any merit into it because it was the first preseason game, now if out #1 unit is still being soft in the last preseason game i'll start to worry.

Well I prefer to stop them at all points :)

:) Hey, I'd love to force three and outs all season. But we are going to get tested in red zone at times. Last year, we would generally fail the test. That goal line stand was a good sign. Hopefully, it will continue into the regular season.

You know when I'll worry... when we're in Miami and Ronnie or Ricky, or Lamar, or Travis or whomever run on us... then I'll worry. Until then, it's just practice at getting better!

Is it just me, or does anyone else think our Offense is not gonna be that great this year? I don't know, maybe it is just too early and I'm reading too much into things.

Khan isn't one to give out faint praise. He could be some idiot homer with Orange Sunglasses, but Khan isn't really the romantic, at least anymore. At least he knocked me out of homer mode into my more comfortable comlaining mode. Wait till I see a game. The homers can stay at the official site, including the reporters.

Sounds like everything is going well, great report Khan. The old method was better, though this isn't bad by any means.

Should Lelie be practicing against Bailey instead of Walls? Rod knows what he can do and could probably use to give Walls an idea as to what he should expect from a savy vet #2 WR. Lelie needs the premier competition that Bailey can offer him, because frankly, Lelie should be able to just run past Walls.

Like the word on Mauck, sounds like he's settled down and is playing solid ball now. Thats all I'd like to see from him is solid ball that won't hurt this team should he find a spot on the roster. I don't see how he makes the PS though with Saban's QB depth chart in Miami.

Devoe sounds like someone who should make the team. Davis is once again showing those flashes huh? Let me know when he shows them in the regular season. ;P Glad Shanny is kicking some ass on special teams too, they clearly needed it.

Thanks for the report Kaylore! sorry that you were'nt able to make it out to Legends's for the game Sat. I am not going to put much into this first game or the depth chart at this point, the season is still not here...yet. Does anyone think the Eagles will be as bad as they played in their first game? It was the first time playing against someone besides their teammates, and seeing different plays and such, Don't put too much into Ron Dayne either, last year he led the NFL in rushing yards during pre-season, but only carried the ball 52 times during the year...Watts NEEDS to start playing in games the way I have seen him practice, Devoe reminds me of Chris Doreing, everybody liked him and compared him to McCaffery, he made some good plays in the pre-season but did not make the team, Devoe was playing against the 3rd stringers and scored late in the game, that is a lot different than doing that against the Patriots in week 6.

Devoe and McCaffrey... now that you mention it, they're like identical twins... like one of them is looking in a mirror.

Khan or anyone who knows,

I'm planing on going down to Dove Valley tomorrow for the first time. Do I need to pick up some tickets some where? Or just show up and walk in? Also what is the schdule like? I see on the teams page that their scheduled at 8:30 and 3:50, but what happens if I get there around 9:30-10:00? Will I still be able to get in and if so how long does the morrning practice last?

Thanks in advance for any info!

No fuss, no mess. No tickets. Just show up. Morning practice is 8:30 - 10:30. So if you show up at 9:30, you'll just get in an hour.

One thing about the first string is that they are often not playing their hardest. Most are guaranteed a job and don't want to risk injury and are playing for little. I've seen some of the worst performances in preseason suddenly change on opening day. I'm thinking both Anderson and Bell are worried about another injury.

It's nice to see that Bailey and Warren are back out there. Will they play this Saturday?

The practices are free and usually end between 10:30 and 11:15 - whatever Shanny feels like. People come and go as they please. Look for me while you're there! If you don't see a large genetically engineered man with white hair, look for a 6'3" white young man who's wearing all white with a black Tag Heuer (http://www.tagheuer.com/thebrand/history/index.lbl) baseball hat. Mediator12 should be there as well. See you tomorrow! :Broncos:

Thanks! Theres been some change of plans though, I'm now going to the later practice.

I'm really excited, been wanting to go check it out for several years. If you do happen to be at the later practice, you'll know me by my piercings and my white Bailey jersey.

I'll keep my eyes peeled, but don't hold your breath on evening practice occuring. What is the saying? "You know you're from Colorado if you never schedule a picnic in August between three and six."

From what I understand, the morning practices are more likely to have pads and vicious.

I think they go thru more contact in the morning, let them munch down, check them out, and kinda go thru coaching and drills in shorts in the afternoon. I think Wednesday morning might be the last full pads practice of camp.

There won't be alot of difference next week, other than I think it will be a ton harder to even get thru the gate. I think you will need a press release.

We should petition to get Wabbit (who I think writes a bit allready for a certain place), or Kaylore to get press cred. I think it might be possible.

I have a press card, Mock...or 'placard' as security prefers to call it.

I've just had other priorities & haven't been able to get out there as often as others...who, by the way, have done a fantastic job detailing the goings on, as it were.

Also, assuming this post posts...heh...it'll be the first time in a while I don't get a 'this page has expired' alert from my computer. I haven't been able to post for a few days now, although I keep up with what is going on here.

I finally got a chance to see the game!

The Broncos showed NOTHING in this game. NOTHING!

Defense will snap it together if they focus on football instead of talking themselves up. Our new CB's are looking good. Oh dear God keep them away from the microphone. I hope they find a slot for Dorsett.

Offense looked like crap. They played better than last year but it's not too late for them to really stink it up. BCP does not look like the punk from State.
A QB running should not count towards the "running game".

Someone needs to slip a weapon and a koran in the Special teams coachs carry-on next road trip. Holy Crap they are bad!

You posted fine Wabbit. There have been some problems posting, but I haven't had any. Yeah, Kaylore is having fun with it I think, only I think Khan is getting to be a lobster, he might look like an Arab out there with a black cap, but it's allready cooled here in N. Iowa, so the worst is almost over. It's been pleasant here. I miss the moderate climate of Denver, not to hot, not too cold. Kinda like the Bears porridge. God it was horrible in the summer in the panhandle of Florida. Just horrible humidity and hot. It's hurricanes from the north here in N. Iowa at times in the winter. It's rare Denver gets either.

I agree with this. Our defense should have shut down the run period, and not just on the goal line stand. The Texans run a very, very similar run blocking scheme like we do so to our defense that should have been bread and butter plays.
