Im curious if anyone saw the game? I thought it was strange to see Smith as the starter for SF. Ratay did well last year when healthy and I would have thought Smith would be eased in a bit. Only thing I saw of note was that Ratay needed only 6 plays to put up 14 points on Fade 2nd stringers, and that Collins was dinking the ball all over, not that it is a bad thing for them but not the vertical gamecalling I expected.

SF needs QB help NOW. I'm not surprised they are giving Smith a chance to be the man right away, since they decided to go the QB route and not use that #1 pick on other needs.

No, I didn't see the game...to answer your original question...

It was very hard game to watch, it was live at 10 oclock on the east coast. The raider defense did not look good, and Smith had his moments againts them. Their O was alright, but they looked like they were going thru the motions. I watched about 15 minutes, so they might have improved.

Which one of the 3 and outs would that have been? They got one first down from a penalty in the entire first half.

??? According to the article he did absolutely nothing.

And no, I'm not worried about the Fader defense at all, btw.

Those numbers were telling: Smith was 3-for-9 for 25 yards and the 49ers managed just 39 yards of total offense. By comparison, the Raiders' first and second units racked up 203 yards by halftime during Smith's tenure.

From the Tribune recap.

Andrew Walter looked far better than Smith. He made some big time throws.

As state I watch about 15 minutes, he as rookie qb he was able to avoid the rush, step up in the pocket once or twice, and basically stay alive. I didn't say he looked like Joe or Steve Young. The play that I like when brief time I watched was when he had to scramble, didn't get the first but showed his mobility.

From everything I've seen and read, 3rd rounder and Colorado native Andrew Walter looked much better than 1st overall Alex Smith.

Here's the God's honest truth as impartial as I can be.

Oakland moved up and down the field at will, running and passing. Gabriel and Teyo Johnson both dropped sure TD's. Our OL looked dominant pass blocking, run blocking needs work. Jordan looked pretty good, like a legit RB. Fargas looked like garbage.

Out of the 4-3 our front 4 played well, 3-4 still looked suspect. Brayton looked good playing SSLB and looks to be in the 260 range. Overall the D looked dominant, but it is Alex Smith and the 9ers so my enthusiasm is tempered .

Tuiasopsopo looked like stir fried **** and one of his lollipops got picked off and ran back for a tater. Some dude who will probably be cut fumbled the ensuing kickoff and there was another score.

Stanford Routt looked ok playing the slot guy, but once he took over for CWood at LCB, he got lit up like a Christmas tree. Fab Washington looked like he knew what he was doing out there. Schweigert played well. The Guard we took from Iowa (Pete McMahon) played well. Anttaj Hawthorne looked like crap though.

Kirk Morrison looked faster than advertised and tackled everything that moved.

All in all, it was hard to get a read off of that game because the 9ers suck so bad.

Walter threw a goddamed pea between 2 defenders and hit the reciever on the head, as he wasnt looking because he figured he was covered.

I think that Walter will be the one player picked by the Raiders that will ultimately have the most impact on that team. He is absolutely perfect for that system. Not real mobile but, big, strong, and accurate. He didn’t break 25 year old pac-10 career college passing records for nothing (which the duke held up till Walter made it to ASU)

I watched most of the first half. Jokeland looked vanilla, but they weren't even looking Moss' way. Jordan looked decent, but not scary. Collins still looks streaky.

They suck.

I thought Oakland's first team offense and defense did very well. Granted it was against SF but still. The 49ers back seven did do a decent job though in the beginning on forcing Collins to check down to the backs. Lamont Jordan caught alot of passes in the early going in the flat area. Jordan had some very nice runs as well. Oakland ran the ball alot in the early going. Their offensive line did a good job in protecting the passer. Collins got a good deal of time to throw although Julian Peterson almost got there a few times. I did notice the Raiders WRs drop several balls though. I think thats something they can work on. Johnnie Morant was very impressive as the game went on. Gabriel made some plays as well. I didnt think Teyo Johnson was that impressive. Walter had a good night but it was against the 49ers scrubs. He did pretty well though and made an amazing play at the end getting away from a defender and lofting it into the endzone for a TD. He did throw an INT the next series though. I didnt notice Anttaj Hawthorne at all. The Raiders had a guy named Carr who made plays. Warren Sapp had a pretty decent night. For a little bit he looked like the Tampa Bay Warren. He had a sack. They did pretty well I thought despite the score. SF was able to run on them a little bit. Maurice Hicks and another back did fairly well although Barlow didnt do alot. One problem for Oakland's starters was their red zone offense. They did a good job moving the ball but once they got near the goal they struggled and had to settle for FGs with Jano missing one very early on.

How did Courtney Anderson fare? He went to my alma mater so he's a rare exception to root for on the Raiders.

I think njbil, Next Step and Maximus are true football fans and very knowledgeable. However, they never get my blood boiling because they are so classy and have their heads on straight. It seems like the Raiders aren't talked about enough on this site. I hate all the focus on the Queefs on this site. We need to get more Raider hate on here!

52, I saw Anderson a few times but I didnt really notice him alot. As far as the WRs and TEs, Morant is the one who really stood out to me.

Hopefully Dick Tomey can turn that program around.

I think I saw a gleam in the Raiders coachs eye. I wonder if it's like that gleam Shanahan had when revealed and then completely hid "the plan"?

Raiders didn't want to show anything to the 9er's so this was such a waste of time watching this game. I don't remember the Raiders doing well in pre-season since back in the days when they really sucked.

I caught a glimpse of the Chiefs game and some of the Chargers highlights. There wasn't a Bronco highlight, clip, game, or mention made. The cruel and bitter irony.

Walters had some rookie mistakes but that kid looks to have a future in the league. Very impressive. I wouldn't mind having him on our roster to develop.

Raider fans have reason to be excited about this prospect.

Walters already looks better than Tui.

He looked good but he was playing against the 3rd string D and Smith played against the first string with Sapp, giving him his first NFL sack (won't count in the books though)

Gabriel is still a body catcher. Morrant was snatching the ball with his hands.

no dis intended, but the niners are so bad it was hard to tell anything from the performances in that game.

With KC's game, yeah, it looked like they were just as bad a last year, but then again, the defense was possibly playing a gameplan that is not in any way indictitive of what they'll do in a month.

Pretty much what I thought would be the case when they started Smith. 49ers were in no way an offensive juggernaut last year, but with Smith in their for his first pro snap ever, well it was bound to be ugly.

No problem at 11 o'clock at night sometimes the post doesn't come across like it should.

What I liked about Smith is his mobility and brain. What I don't like is his size (he needs to bulk up) and SF line, it going to get him killed.

PS: Might Joe Young was great movie.

It looked like Turner was trying to see if they could put together long drives and grab the TOP advantage rather than a bombs away approach.

Who the hell knows, it's preaseason.

Well, its like this. You take a handful of crap see, and you throw it up against the wall and "bam" it hits the wall there. And then it stinks and its all over the place, with no real pattern or organization, and thats how the Raiders did.
