So I had to man a Breitling (http://www.breitling.com/en/index1024.php) watch booth at an Air show today. The funny thing was it was a total down pour, so we had a lot more customers than you'd expect. The other funny thing is that it was at Centennial Airport. For those of you who don't live in Colorado, Centennial Airport is, given average traffic, about one minute and twenty eight seconds from Dove Valley. :D The other funny thing is the rain let up around 2:45. Our show was done by 2:45 so guess where I took a stroll to.

It turns out it was totally lucky, because they said they weren't going to hold practice and changed their minds at the last minute. There was almost no one there. I saw maybe fifty people, and we were all alowed to walk around freely. Needless to say I got a good view of a lot of players.

First let me comment on Brown. I didn;t find out about it until I arrived at Dove Valley. Andrew Mason told me. It's troubling, but not surprising and I have some good news today that will do a little bit to take the sting off.

There were a lot of starters that didn't practice today, and some non-starters that didn't either: Pryce (Who practiced this morning), Bailey, Lynch, Nalen, Clarrett ("groin" Who called it?), and Alexander.

Lets get this surprise party started!!!!

First: An Exchange I had with Todd Sauerbrun.

So I'm walking into camp wearing some nicer jeans and my dress shoes with a Breitling polo on and my Jacket. I feel a little weird, but the air is cool and there is no sun. It was a welcome alternative.

As some of you know, the entrance is right by the field-turf field where the specialists practice a lot and were doing so today. As I walked down toward the sidewalk, I saw Todd and Ernster were practicing Sky-kicks for punts from the 40 or so. Todd NAILED one and it had really amazing hang time. I shouted "Nice Leg Todd!!!" He turns moves toward me and sticks both fingers in the air going "Aw Yeah!" I gave him a "Wooot!" and watched them for a little bit.

They both looked good. Elam was fielding them in the endzone. Todd was the best at putting back spin on his ball so they'd hit at like the two and then bounce back to the seven or so. The big thing was how long they were up there. They both had such great hang time that it would hard to believe that there is isn't a person alive or even partially dead that couldn't get downfield in time. They worked the special teams out today, including coverage, but I'll get ot that later.

Next: The Backup QB's get a chance - All of them.

First let me say that this practice was generally blah for me. It was a lot of fourth and third string work. Some of you may find that interesting, but for me the best part of the day was talking to Andrew Mason on the sideline. He really knows his football, and I got some nice insights from him. We were on the same page on some of the players, though I won't say which ones.

When I walked up the fiirst thing I heard was an angry man swearing at Nate Jackson: "Damnit Nate, get your head out of your ass!!!" This man, who continued to swear at the tight ends all throughout practice, is Tim Brewster. He is like a drill sergeant. I never heard him before because its never been as quiet as it was at Dove Valley. There wasn't even any media there really. Good for me, bad for them. Ha!

Lets get to the QB's

Chad Friehauf: He's still raw and has some mechanics, and accuracy to work on. Nice arm, though. He did goal-line drills (all the teams did) as well as some regular ones. He didn't make any throws into bad coverage, but he didn't make any throws. I kind of felt for him. He's out there and at one point faced the second team defense, and you're just thinking "Wow. Pat Chukwurah is planning on eating him!" They didn't have pads so contact was kept to minimal, but it still was interesting. He got quite a few reps and after a year on the PS I think and 640 bean burritos, I think he'll have a chance to compete.

Matt Mauk: He looked really good. All the quarterbacks did. He actually made a throw down field that was pretty deep and nice. Not a lot of bad throws and he went through his progressions better. He still looks a littl awkward, but he took some chances and I think the practices and reps are showing their quality.

Danny Kannell: He looked good. He played a little conservative, but at least he didn't throw a pick. Dropped one in the middle of a zone and threw to his backs a lot. He tossed one to Dayne, who dropped it. It wasn't a hard throw. I would say average performance, but at least he's better and trying.

Van Pelt: He looked solid. Some nice throws down field and he's doing better and better against blitzes. He nailed Tatum Bell in a soft zone in between Ian Gold and DJ Williams (I was surprised. They looked confused.) Leach is on the second team and made some nice catches for him, but more than that was Todd Devoe and Charlie Adams. Crenshaw had a few too.

Plummer: He was good but got very few reps. Generally they would call a play, he'd go out. They'd execute it fine. And then the others came in. They had one play where Warren tipped the ball at the line and no one caught it (despite my screaming for them to do so.) The closest player was DJ. His Shuffle pass is left handed. I want to remind you that Reuben scored on a shuffle pass play last year. That counts as a passing TD, so Plummer has 1 int and 1 TD left handed. Nyah!

Next: Running backs.

Kaylore

Tatum and Anderson split time again on the first time, while it was just Tatum on the second except for a few plays when Dayne was in.

Anderson: Mike looked tired today. Andrew Mason reminded me it was two-a-days and it was wet and chilly out. Nonetheless, I couldn't help notice that the Taco Bell was agressive and still had burst. On one play Anderson tried to spin away from fatafehi, and just got bounced back. It was a pretty weak-sauce run. The D-closed very well against the goalline draw and bootleg plays today. Andersone didn't get a ton of reps. He still catches the ball the best.

Tatum Bell: Played well today. Had good burst and broke through to the hole. Caught some nice balls. He had a good delayed release. hE set his block up well, broke down field and just as he looked the ball was there (BVP).

Ron Dayne: He dropped two easy balls. It looked bad. His running was strong though. We are forunate to be so deep at that possition. His drops didn't seem to hurt his status because he got some reps on the second string.

Brandon Miree: He was in on maybe two plays. One pass play that he dropped, and another run play. Nothing there.

Cecil Sapp. Sapp looked good. He broke some nice runs. Caught the ball once, and picked up a nice blitz. He looked good.

John Engleberger: Boo-yah! This kid camp to play. The kid notched like three or four sacks. He was all over the field today. He really breaks to the seams on some plays. I don't know how I've missed him, but maybe it was the system or just one of the players who play better in the afternoon. Maybe I just missed him, but it was fun to watch him. He's light and quick and that's tough to beat. A nice tackle behind the line. Just overall good hustle. Worry not about Brown.

Ian Gold: He was really playing well. He had two tackles behind the line and stuck with his man pretty well. Our Linebackers suffered in the zone coverage today, including Al Wilson. They didn't close very well. I would say Ian was the best up there (Sorry Slap and SoCal.) He just seemed to be one that was still playing hard at the end of the day.

Guess who was in Bailey's Spot on the first team: Darrent Williams. He plays better in the afternoon. He had some great coverage and generally his guy didn't get thrown to much. No big plays except for the kick off practices. My biggest knock on Darrent Williams is he is too agressive. He gambles a little too much. He'll play off for a pick and get burned. During returns rather than set and secure the ball, he'll try to run into and secure as he moves. This is a big no-no, and he dropped one today because of it. The good news is he beat two guys and broke one through. His body control and quickness is amazing. Luke and Roc were also returning kicks, but they didn't look as good, though all made very deep returns.

I'll do the coverage report now since I'm talking about it already. Coverage was below average (obviously). They rotated a lot of different guys into different slots. I'm not sure what they were doing. One guy appeared to me to miss a block, but the ST coach was congratulating him after the play, so there is something I'm missing about their scheme or something. The rest of this and next week's evening practices is special teams, so be grateful its getting worked on. I'm sure they were just trying guys out today. I certainly hope so.

Ian was the best backer today? ugh!~ ahh its okay, he cant suck everyday. ;D

Great reports and I am glad to see them working hard on Special Teams.
Very good.

I am really excited about seeing these young corners in preseason games. Darrent Williams looks like a big play type of guy and Foxworth appears to be consistent. Glad that it looks like we may have hit on this damn position for once.

Ya Da. seems to me like a guy that would play aggresive/ gamble a lot. It pays sometimes but most the time, you just get beat caz in the NFL QB'[s and WR's are really good and fast. Im glad Da. is playing well tho. Engleberger is also not a shocker to me, he is my kind of player who just hustles all the time.

Kaylore - Was DJ and Al lacking effort this afternoon, or were they just plain sucking in zone coverage/confused??

Kaylore
08-04-2005, 06:10 PM
Ok that's it. General thoughts:

Special teams: I think with as good as todd and maybe even Ernster are, we don't need the coverage to get real good. If we can do "average" and try to bury him the other return guy with kicks, I think that will make us light years better. Oddly they didn't practice returning with them kicking, but used a machine.

Offense: It occured to me how hard it is to defend Shanahan's playcalling. The defense was trying really hard, but there were so many different plays and audibles that the D gets owned. That's just characteristic Shanahan. I guess we need the pads to come on to get a true guage of where they are at.

Defense: The rush still looks good, but not as good. However, Pryce and Brown were out. Ekuban played well his part for where he was at and Engleberger impressed me today. Maybe knowing that Brown needs some healing has him thinking he can start? Don't know. I watched Warren closely today and he makes plays and hustles. So far no one has unseated him from his starting spot, so we'll watch and hope. Another D-lineman that looks good is Palepoi. Mason reminded me that he was second highest on sacs last year. We are deep on the line, and the wisdom in that is obvious.

Ok, really I'll be off in the mornings for sure this weekend. I'll try and get to a Special Teams practice, but don't hold your breath until Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. That I got to this one was a fluke of good luck. Thanks for your support and patience with my excessive typos.

Thats a possibility although with Khan's reports the last couple days that he has been getting better and better I think he will make it. He has rare ability, its just a matter of him getting into it and it appears he is starting to do that. Hopefully he isnt out more than a couple practices. Right now, ive got Paymah as a strong candidate for the IR unless we dump Spikes and go with 8 on the OL.

Yeah he does. He was showing progress. He has a real good balance of power and quickness. It's not speed, its his reactions, quickness and raw power that are there. You can see the potential under that layer of one-too many burrito supremes.

I never enjoyed the next generation or anything after that. Just TOS and the first six films. Gen. Chang huh? He was a decent villian, a bunch of shakespeare lines. I thought Commander Kruge was the 2nd best villian behind Khan. Christopher Lloyd was very underrated in that role. I loved that battle scene above genesis.

Special teams: I think with as good as todd and maybe even Ernster are, we don't need the coverage to get real good. If we can do "average" and try to bury him the other return guy with kicks, I think that will make us light years better. Oddly they didn't practice returning with them kicking, but used a machine.

Neither Moc or Dayne are gonna be TD remodels. But they each have their own skills that they will bring to the table. Moc will make the squad, Dayne has a great opportunity, but with other positions a need to have more guys, the RB spot may be cut short. IDK tho, maybe Shanny will keep 4 rb's and only 1 fb in johnson and just have MA be the back up FB.

Dayne has 5 pro years under his belt, came from a great college program, and hasn't done sh!t in the NFL. MA may be older, but he has actually put up numbers, and if he can he can still ball, I don't see how that's a negative. It's not like we're looking to Dayne to be a long-term investment either.

Man this is what Ive been waiting for right here. This report. Better than I expected, especially combined with the punter report you had a few posts earlier, but Im saddened to hear about our coverage. If we can barely stop Darrent, how we gonna stop Dainty Hall?

We'll gel though. Kaylore.

Another great report and wonderful reat Khan!!

Looking back on how RD hit a wall last season I expect that no matter how well MA performs, he will be top backup. I am not surprised that he looked a little sluggish because he plays hard but is over the 30 year mark. I do think that Shanny would prefer to get MA around 10 carries a game until the post season run and have him fresh for the playoffs. Each day it looks like MA will be the backup FB also so we may carry 4 RBs and only 1 FB with Hape being jack of all trades once again.
