I kinda hope the Av's struggle without Forsberg - long term. So Pierre Lacroix doesent make the same bonehead mistakes.
I'm about to get banned from the Colorado Avalanche forum for my ranting on Lacroix.... It just hurts that much.
Anyway.... Go Flyers! (It still dosent feel right to say... I'll get the hang of it over time)

Lacroix had his hands tied by the cap. Were were going to lose 2 of 6 star players; either Sakic, Forsberg, Blake, Foote, Hejduk, or Tanguay. It turns out Forsberg and Foote were the ones to go. It's punishment for selling out every game for a decade and not signing high priced free agents from other teams.

Lacroix let 2 of his top 4 players - and his 2 assistant team Captains go in one free agency period.
I would hav ecut Tanguay to keep Forsber in tow.
I though that by letting Foote go, we would be able to retain Forsberg...
But losing Foote AND Forsberg at once? Thats unthinkable.
The worst has happened.
Plus maybe the "Go Flyers" will feel more natrual once the season starts.

I liked Forsberg on several levels. First, he played in Colorado.... second I loved the way he played and the way he handled himself... third, with my avitar now you could see that I'm Swedish. Forsberg was the reason I watched and played hockey.
I went to Ornskoldsvik durring trip through Sweden with my uncle last month. While I was up there, thats all I really talked about with the people. He is just as popular there as he is in Colorado.

The other thing to remember is how long is Peter going to play? Or put another way, given the beatdowns he's taken for years, how many years does he have left? Especially compared to Hejduk and Tanquey? Unfortunately, now the Av opponents are going to look at Sakic like some kind of free lunch. I'm sure the NHL will uphold the new rules and keep Joe from getting constantly mugged.

Personally, I'm more annoyed at having to let Foote go. Foote prolly can play at a high level for a few more years. Blake's great, and has the big shot of course, but it'd have been nice if Pierre could've strutchured the times of the contracts to keep Foote instead.
But I hate the whole labor agreement. I'd rather have seen less cap and consolodated some teams.
Get over it. I think we all loved Forsberg. Unfortunately he won't be in the NHL for the long haul... he would only take a two year deal. You are going to deal guys like Hejduk and Tanguay who are very young still and have star power written all over them for two year flirtation with Forsberg? I'm as sad as the next Avs fan but that is just stupid. First of all, Forsberg will be lucky if plays 2/3's of his games for the Flyers. He has all kind of injury problems and hes starting to become concussion prone. Not good when you have a huge bullseye on your head night in and night out.
I don't blame Lacroix one bit. He had to make a tough decision. Blake can play defense and score and Sakic year in and year out produces. You keep them and the young kids previously mentioned and let the older defenseman Foote (i love that guy, he should have been a lifer) and Forsberg go. There is no easy decision about this but this is the NHL we are in now. The reason we are in this problem is that we draft, develope and implement players so well in our system.

I'm guessing this is Peter's cash out year, and then it's back to Sweden. I wish him all the best. He gave his all to the Avs. I have nothing but respect for him, for all time. Pierre had to make a nasty decision, but I don't see where he had a bunch of options.

Theres a thing called limited resources. Look it up. You only care because you are Swedish. I hate to tell you but that doesn't mean a damn thing when it comes to numbers.
Forsberg could have come down on his side if he really wanted to stay. He knew where we were at CAP Wise. Hell for all the years we paid him money and he was out with an injury, he should have given us a pass. We nursed him through so many injuries, its sick to think of. Yet, the first and probably last chance he gets to go for the bottom dollar... he goes to the highest bidder.
That was his call, not Pierre's.

I cheer for them in the Olympics about as much as I do the USA, and some of my favorite players are my favorite players because they are from Sweden, but the team will always be bigger than one individual player.
My favorite D-man and one of my favorite players in the league is Nick Lidstrom, and I hate the ****ing Red Wings, another fave of mine is Marcus Naslund, and I can't stand the Canucks almost as much as the Red Wings.
So stop the, "I'm a fan of the Avs only because of Forsberg" bull**** and quit being a fairweather bitch. I'll be sure to remember this once the Avs start doing well and you try to jump back on the bandwagon.

I'd rather have Blake than Foote, though many will argue that getting rid of Blake would have freed enough room for Foppa and Foote, which would have been a better deal.

I wouldn't be one of them. The cold, hard truth of it is that Foppa is on his last year (IMO). He's been talking about it ever since he lost the spleen. He wants to cash out and go play in Sweden. Foote has been getting hurt quite a bit as well. Pierre offered the best he was able to offer.
Sakic is in his prime. Tanquay and Hejduk are going to be stars. Hinote looks solid as well. Abby is looking good. Blake is still better than Foote because he brings the great D plus the scary blueline shot. The only thing I see in this deal is that the Avs now have a roster that compares (favorably) with the rest of the NHL. Instead of 3 Grade A lines, the Avs now have two. Welcome to the real world.

Yeah, I cannot disagree with that, as both are awfully good, and Blake has the shot. But Foote's been sort of the guts.
I'd keep the Canadian (God forgive me) over the Swede though. The injuries.

Some sportsfans would bitch about being hung with a new rope. The salaries and ticket prices were soaring out of control, and without a big television contract to offset them, and fans complained. Now they have put in measures to ensure the long term health of the league, and fans are complaining. You think we are the only team with salary problems, I'm sure the GMs with the Rangers and Leafs are saying "Okay where do we begin trimming?" This is the same effect that happened in the NFL, when they installed their salary cap, and some fans became quite upset. The Avalanche were lucky to be able to keep most of their core guys. I'm upset that Footer is gone, but I also know that it's business, and hopefully they've got a young defenseman that is ready to make that jump from the minors.

Yep, we won 2 cups without spending a dime in Free Agency, Sakic, Forsberg, Hejduk, Foote, Tanguay, Hinote were all brought up in the farm system with Roy, Blake, and Bourque all traded for, Avs never went out and spent millions of dollar on UFA's because Pierre had built a good enough farm system to go along with some shrewd midseason trading.
The guy has spent the last 10 years keeping the Avs at a Stanley Cup calibur team and now he was forced to make 1 economic move to keep us under the cap, and he gets thrown under the bus.

They put Hatcher and McCarty on waivers last month. They signed Yzerman and Chelios to one year deals. They are getting on in years - Chelios is 43 and Yzerman is 40, I believe. I don't know what the Wings financial situation is - and if they have any money to play with.

According to AP report dated Aug. 4th, the Wings payroll is at $26.6 million and they have $12 million cap room left.
Just found this - from the Detroit Free Press dated today (Aug. 5th) :
"The 14 Red Wings under contract: Detroit has about $10 million to spend on nine players, including restricted free agents Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall, plus a starting goaltender. The league's salary ceiling is $39 million, but the Wings want to keep $1 million in reserve for emergencies."

They signed Patrice Brisebois. If they bring anybody else in, it will be a forward most likely, and it would have to be under a million, assuming they have that much to spare. They'll be up to the cap once they get all their RFAs signed. The Avs better hope they don't have any nasty arbitration cases.
It'll be tight for the Avs this year, but they'll have cap room once Blake and Sakic's deals come off the books next summer. One thing to keep in mind, as we all know this cap is linked to revenues, if revenues go down, so will the cap. It wouldn't be a shock if the cap is $37 million next year. Teams that have avoided the free agency frenzy will be in better shape with more cap space next year, plus there will be a nice crop of younger UFAs.
Things seem bleak right now, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

No I don't, its too early to put such a list together. It depends what RFAs take their qualifying offers or what other players get extentions. But I think you'll see guys like Lecavalier and Thornton on that list and you know how much Lacroix covets Prince Vince (i.e. 1998).

I disagree. You keep your youth. It's no secret Forsberg is one stroke away from retiring and who knows when that will be. Tangy and Hejduk are young and the future of the club.
Foote is getting old and was starting to decline, admit or not but the fact remains that many in the league knew he was starting to slip. I don't fault him for losing Foote and Forsberg...I do fault him for the schmucks he brought in though.
