Kanell upset about demotion
QB officially drops to No. 4 on Broncos depth chart

ENGLEWOOD — Who says blondes have more fun?
"I haven't slept the past couple of nights," Danny Kanell said. "I'm pretty ticked off."

Four days after raving about Kanell's commitment to the Denver Broncos' offseason program, head coach Mike Shanahan and his staff decided to demote Jake Plummer's backup to the No. 4 spot. Former Colorado State standout Bradlee Van Pelt was still running No. 2 with Matt Mauck No. 3 on Wednesday after the pecking order was changed Monday night.
"They made no indication to me that it was performance-related," said Kanell, who calmly spoke with reporters after doing his best to avoid them on a terrible Tuesday for the former Florida State standout. "I think it was just giving Bradlee a shot. ... Things change and things evolve, as long as I keep persevering and keep working that much harder things will fall into place."

When Kanell arrived in Denver two years ago hoping to revive his career, he was behind Steve Beuerlein and Jarious Jackson on the depth chart for the backup spot and ended up getting cut after training camp. By the time the 2003 season ended, he had started two games and solidified the No. 2 spot he held until three days ago.
"You don't get anywhere by moping around or feeling sorry for yourself, so I'm just going to approach it with a positive attitude and keep working that much harder. When my opportunity comes, I'll be ready," Kanell said.
When Kanell was drafted by the Giants in 1996, the New York media backed his candidacy for starter. It didn't last.
"When I was a rookie I was the guy everybody loved. I was coming out of a big-time college program and was battling for the starting job ... they were talking me up pretty big," Kanell said. "You've just got to take things in stride. I think Bradlee is handling it well, he's working hard and he's got a bright future. It's my job to keep pushing him, and we're going to all keep pushing each other and keep working hard."
Before you pencil Van Pelt in at No. 2, remember that the first of four preseason games doesn't kick off for another nine days.
"I think the coaches want to evaluate us and how we respond in game situations," Kanell said. "The only way to do that is to get us out there in the preseason. That's what I'm going to prepare for. Whenever I get called I'll go out there and do my job."
Pryce still right
Trevor Pryce did not practice on Wednesday due to a sore back, but the defensive end literally danced around what seems like a serious issue for the Broncos.
"I feel fine, I feel fine, I feel fine," Pryce insisted. "I will be practicing (today). ... If I didn't feel fine, could I do this?"
At that point, Pryce busted a move. Shanahan didn't feel like dancing, but he didn't seem too worried, either.
"His back is a little sore. We just thought it would be smart to keep him out," Shanahan said. "It's part of the process, according to the doctors, that it will get sore after three, four or five days of practice. It's natural. It's a little scar tissue that has built up. It shouldn't be any type of setback — very minor, at least according to the doctors. Hopefully he will be ready to go (today).

Alexander the great
The Broncos use a lot of two-tight end sets, which means there is a chance that Jeb Putzier and Steven Alexander can both be "starters." But during recent practices it has been Alexander playing with the first-team offense.
The reason? Perhaps because the veteran is a better blocker.
"I think it's fun to get in there and mix it up a little bit and show a little toughness," Alexander said. "This running game is really easy for a tight end, it's all zone-blocking stuff, so you're usually not one-on-one with a big guy. So I don't mind it. I have a lot of fun doing it, I take pride in doing it. It's something I've really been working on for the last couple years, and I think it has really helped me out as a player."
Putzier has been practicing through the pain of a minor knee injury.
O improvement
Overall, the defense has been getting the better of the offense during this training camp. But Gary Kubiak's side of the ball seemed to fight back a little harder during the morning scrimmage, which included Plummer and Rod Smith hooking up on a third-down touchdown pass.
"It was pretty impressive today. I think today was really the first day that we really came together and everything looked pretty sharp," Shanahan said. "It was a good start, and hopefully we can keep it going."
Notable
With Pryce out, Anton Palepoi and Marco Coleman each had opportunities to take some snaps with the first-team defense. ... Dorsett Davis was on the field after leaving Tuesday morning to see his child born. ... The afternoon special teams practice was moved inside because of the thunderstorms that swept across the metro area. ... The Broncos will practice twice today, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 3:50 p.m.

Is this guy for real? Your ticked off. Youve clearly sucked ass from day 1 according to Khan and according to the coaches now apparently. And your the one who is pissed off? Danny should be worrying more about improving his game in the practices than being a blonde bombshell. This guy is lucky to have a job in the league.

Exactly. I don't care how much experience he's had. If he throws picks all the time, its just as good as an untried rookie. At least with Van Pelt you're building on the future.

I like BVP. I could see him developing a couple of years down the road into a challenge for Jake to fend off if he keeps improving.

The thing I've always liked about Van Pelt is the guy is an athelete. His almost got Elway's body style ( note: for those few here with difficulty interpeting what is actually being said, I didn't suggest he was another Elway and should start tommorrow :-).
He's a player too, even if raw, and when we drafted him I had fantasies of him developing into the next Tom Brady-like out-of-the-blue success. Whether he ever does is the question, but you got to like what he's showing so far.

I am jumping on he BVP bandwagon, I hope he smokes Kanell and keeps Denver from using one of our first day picks on a QB next year.
****, I'd rather have Rod Smith practicing with the 2nd squad than Danny "more picks than a coal mine" Kanell. Sorry Danny boy, you gotta play well in camp before we're going to trust you with the offense under live fire conditions.

I've never like Danny as the #2.. I haven't read much good news about Van Pelt and the fact that he's #2 scares me. The only backup that I've read consistent good news about is Mauck.
I think the whole crew behind Plummer sucks and if Plummer gets hurt... bye-bye.

Kanell should have been a water boy a long time ago congrats on the promotion danny, you finally get a shot at doing a good job at a well deserved position..............
I can't believe he has made it this long. Our back up QB's have been horrendous since about 2001 and on.

It gives the backups a chance to get much needed practise with starting material. I think Shanny likes to shake players out of their comfort zone. No gimmies, nowhere. He's doing it at RB, DT, QB...others??

longer than that....Kubiak......was the last good one
I mean Brister won us some games, but that was lightining in a bottle, I still say he sucked. Had more to do with a machine that couldn't be stopped more so than Bubby doing anything
We could've scored 20 points with me at QB, I can hand off to TD

Bubby was successful because...
1) He rarely played so defenses and coaches didn't know him.
2) His style is so much different from Elway that once inserted into the game he shocked.
Once he was the starter, he sucked.
Kubes sucked too. I could've had a great career backing up John. Do you remember the game where John got a concusion and then Kubes came in and got a concusion too? Kubes had no wheels and an average at best arm. The mind was willing but the body was weak.

Kanell is no spring chicken. This is probably one of the last shots he has of proving he belongs on the field. It's no wonder he's having trouble sleeping. I have been on Kanell's bandwagon for a long time, but I'm having my doubts right now. Having said that, I'm glad one of our young pups (BVP) is doing great.

Often these guys are a victim of tricky media word manipulation for the sake of sensationalism. It's very likely he said I'm angry at the way i have performed or something to that effect. Saying he is pissed at the decision and the coaches would be a stupid move and he seems smarter than that.

Really, this is not great news. For as long as DK's been on the team now, and with all time he's had to get the system under his belt, it's pretty sad that a couple late-draft pick "project" players, in just their 2d year, can come in from the practice squad and beat him down to fourth string in the first week of camp.
What has Danny been doing all this time?

I must be the only one seeing this as a positive event regarding Mauck and BVP. If BVP is playing well enough in camp to deserve the #2 spot, then I'm happy to see it. Instead of being nervous about having young guns as backups (which I in no way see as being worse than Kannell), I'm excited by the potential of our 2nd years. Who really thought we were gonna win anything special, if Jake goes down, no matter the back-up?
If the guy behind you, out plays you, you deserve demotion, and that guys has earned his shot. I think it's kind of exciting.

This is too funny. Warren who is being ragged on for being an underachiever he gets demoted off of first string and not one person goes to town on him! Danny Kannel gets demoted and everyone here is like Hooray!
People they have not played a preseason game just yet. This is just camp. Plummer and the first string offense failed to score a TD in last years pre-season games while Kannel had three TD drives. Its not over til he's CUT.

That's a good point. We might be making more out of this than it deserves.
(I also saw in the paper that BVP was running around on special teams yesterday - which is at least some indication that he's not a lock for the backup QB spot. Leastways, I don't remember ever seeing Kubes in there on kick coverage.)

You make a good point. I think a lot of this is team building as well as character building. It might be just testing BVP to see if his arrogance pops up. It's probably testing both of them to be sure. How do you know how a person deals with adversity if they never experience any?
Personally I don't care whose the backup. I'm sick of mediocre. Let truly the best man win.

Now, don't jump on me, because I'm not comparing BVP to Brady, but I imagine NE fans were worried about Bledsoe going down when all they had was a 6th round pick behind him.
If BVP is the 2nd best QB when the season starts, then goodbye Kanell, and don't let the door hit you.
Besides, he'll probably be available during the season if something serious were to happen, I doubt anyone would pick him up.
