Darrent Williams' Rookie Journal

“I’ve got to show everybody why I was the team’s top draft pick this year.”
Darrent Williams' player bio

I was nervous on Friday, the first day of camp. All the cameras and all the media were out here and you don’t really know what to expect because it’s your first NFL camp. A lot of people were telling me how it is, how hard it is, and being a rookie, I’m kind of nervous. But the first day went well. I was a little winded, but I broke up a few passes so it went well for me.

I don’t really feel the pressure of being the Broncos’ top draft pick. I know I have a job to do. Since they drafted me where they did, they must think pretty highly of me, so I have to step up and work hard. I’ve got to show everybody why I was the team’s top draft pick this year.

The air up here is so thin! I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas where the humidity is high every day and coming here to Denver where there’s relatively no humidity takes some time to adjust to. No matter how much you think you’re used to it each day, you still have to come out here and run around and adjust to it. I’ve been working out all summer, but the first day of camp I was still short of breath. I know I’m in shape. It’s just the altitude.

I had to tell a joke during the team meeting on Monday in front of the entire team, but that just goes with being a rookie. Besides carrying helmets and shoulder pads to the locker room, jokes are about it. The guys here are cool and don’t do too much hazing. They talk about us and joke on us a little bit, but it’s all cool. It’s all love.

As the camp goes by, my body is feeling a little bit better. The first three days I was feeling really bad, but these last couple of days, I’ve been stretching more and my body is loosening back up. It’s still hard, but once I get going I’m going hard because I want to be the best I can be.
