My wife's B-day is on 9-11, the same as the 1st game of the season. Any ideas on what I can do to both celebrate her B-day and be able to watch the game live? :nono:

She's a trooper and would probably not be upset (outwardly) if l wanted to watch the game. But the ladies here on the OM know that's not a good idea. I know the right thing to do, but I'm still asking for suggestions...especially from the ladies.

Throw her a surprise party on the 10th - or any day before the 11th. She won't be expecting it because it isn't her bday, and then you will have fulfilled your obligation. ;)

How about sending her to a day spa on her b-day. She'll be off getting all pampered and you'll be watching the game.

It's the early game... watch the game and then take her out someplace nice and romantic afterward.

Im reminded of that old Fox Super Bowl commercial where the guy's wife's birthday was on the SB, so they got her up real early, he brought in the kids, they all sang Happy Birthday really fast in front of her and he skipped out to the couch in the family room to start watching the pre-game coverage.

We have a winner. Surprise B-day party on the 9th, nice dinner and date night on the 10th, and spa day on the 11th. Problem solved, no woman will complain about that setup.

I thought about that. But we don't get home from church until 1:00pm EST. I'm trying to do the right thing, but it's hard! :undecided

Honestly, the best gift you could give her is to allow her to also watch the Broncos game next to you. Im trying and failing to see why anyone would be pissed off by the Broncos preempting their birthday.

I really like RaiderH8r's idea.

I would wager most of the ladies here on the Orange Mane would be horrified if you planned anything OTHER than watching the game, especially on their birthday. So I'm not sure how good of advice I could give you....

In my house, opening Sunday is "Dad's Christmas." (No, really! - that's what it is called!)

As much as I love my wife, I would have to use the argument that we could always celebrate her birthday on the 10th or 13th, but Mr. Tagliabue is not likely to be amenable to moving opening Sunday. Thus, since she is so much more loving and understanding than Mr. Tagliabue, I'm going to need her to go ahead and celebrate on the 10th or the 13th.

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, or anything. I'm just saying...

Or, if you wanted to be tactless, you could point out she is getting a bit long in the tooth and any delay in tacking another year on to her already considerable age would be to her benefit.

(Make sure you have a warm blanket and pillow stationed by the couch)

"You guys trying to get me killed?"

Not killed, as much as thrown out for a little while - at which point, you can come over and watch the game at one of our places.

Everybody wins.

No doubt... football and an ice-cold brewski or two would be my idea of the perfect way of spending a birthday.

The day-before party and spa idea is pretty good, though... but if that doesn't work, then perhaps you could set the VCR or Tivo and just avoid all sports news until you do get a chance to watch the game. I mean... if your wife's not happy, you're not gonna be happy either, if you get my drift. ;D

Just make sure if you send her to a spa that she doesn't waltz in the door about, oh... say 4th quarter getting underway...

I doubt it would take her very long to figure out the setup.

That's a great idea. She'll be so pissed at you that she wouldn't want to see you on Sunday, and you'd be able to watch the game.

On the real though, the party the day before sound like gold. As a gift at the party, she gets the day spa deal for the next day. You would be in the clear.

If you don't want to do that, tell her you made reservations at a very nice resturant at about 7pm. The game will be over around 4pm. You'd be in the clear. If she isn't happy with that, well, we had a couple long threads about things guys hate about women. You can post there to vent your anger. I don't see why your entire day should be devoted to her.

i think this is a situation where you do the right thing, but you set up some stock for future bad timings like this.

the wife knows you are a football nut - so she would realize the sacrafice you make for her.

ask her what she wants to do on her day - do it, and tape the game.

next time this type of situation rolls around, she'll remember how unselfish you were...

most women, who know us football guys will sniff right through a day spa....it is indeed a great idea and while they will not turn it down, they will know the motive.

if you go to church - pray that she'll choose to watch the game with you.

My wife's Bday is 10-25 last year was the Cincy monday night game. I asked her what she wanted to do on her B-day & she said nothing. So i got her presents we opened them right before the game & I got pissed at Champ playing like a chump & she didn't talk to me for 10 days.

If she says nothing make sure you do something before or after to make it seem like she means more to you than the game. CHICKS LIE & expect us Husbands to know or be able to read their minds.

My wife watches that freaking Home & Garden & food channel incessently all freaking year but they get pissed when a guy wants to watch a LIVE event for a couple of hours for a few weeks! Can you feel my anger?

They DONT remember the sacrifices after you have been married a few years. I gave up a lot of games thinking the same thing when we were 1st married but she remembers 2 times where there was a conflict & I wanted to watch games & it pissed her off...

This year she has to deal with being a Football widow, I don't care anymore. I want my Broncos! I don't care about the other games!

Women shouldn't be mad because of the way a man choses to spend 3 hours on her Bday. That's silly. If a man did something else with those 3 hours I bet those women wouldn't say a thing. But turn that game on and there is a problem. Funny that men wouldn't have that reaction if a woman decided to watch her weekly show on his Bday.

Tell her before hand that dinner is at 7pm at a nice resturant. If she's pissed then she's just being an a-hole. She doesn't own the day, so she shouldn't be upset.

Hope everything worksout for you.

My only advice would be to do whatever she wants and record the game. If momma aint happy, aint no one happy.
