Our Footballguy Staff Writer Cecil Lammey is flashing his press credentials and brings us the inside scoop from the Bronco's Training Camp. These are his takes on what he saw today at camp.

The story of the day was Jerry Rice. This guy is a pro's pro, but we all knew that. He ran through every route and sprinted all the way to the endzone, no matter how short the route was. He ran great routes and set up defenders well. He looks to be a great addition to the Broncos. He caught nearly every ball thrown his way. Towards the end of practice I did see him get jammed up by some of the younger DBs. I personally think he ran out of gas, because he started out like gangbusters.

Rod Smith was awesome as well. I didn't see him drop a pass and he made several spectacular catches. He made Champ bite on a couple of double moves. Champ would be visibly mad, and then go jam up some young WR. One of the funniest things I saw was Rod blocking Jerry Rice in a blocking drill. These two guys showed why they've had so much success.

Ashley Lelie looks like he just expects the #2 spot to be his. He gave virtually no effort on the plays he wasn't the designated receiver. I even saw him JOG on a go route. After every route he would come back and get some water. He dropped several passes and looked very lax in his effort. I saw him cringe on a route over the middle (there's no hitting) and thus he dropped the ball. He also sat on the water cooler any chance he got. I did see him dig in on a fade stop. Basically the guy is a 2 route WR, the fade and the fade stop. It looks like Lelie might not be more than a decent #2 in this league.

Darius Watts looked fantastic. He was running crisp routes and basically emulating Jerry Rice. After he caught the ball, he too would run to the endzone. He was always hustling, and he put a WICKED move on Champ Bailey that would have been a touchdown if it wasn't for Danny Kanell overthrowing him. Wide open for 6, and Danny misses him. Watts also caught a go pass for 50 yards that was tipped by Roc Alexander. Darius kept his concentration and cradled the ball in running for six. The highlight of the day was his over the shoulder, one hand, LEFT HAND, touchdown catch from Matt Mauck. This kid looks like he's very hungry and could end up #2.

Triandos Luke had a great day except for one play. Let's start with the bad first...Roc Alexander jammed him up and threw him to the ground out of bounds. Just tossed him like a rag doll. Other than that Luke was great. He was running great routes, really flattening out and giving his QB a great target to throw to.

Jeb Putzier was running good routes and catching passes consistently. Stephen Alexander is a great physical specimen, if he can stay healthy he could contribute. He made some nice catches as well. Wesley Duke is a project. I expect him to maybe make the Practice Squad this year.

Mike Anderson was running with fire again. He is very determined to hold onto the starting job, no matter what it takes. He caught the ball consistently.

Tatum Bell was AWESOME running the ball. Unfortunately for him I saw him drop 3 passes. He did make one nice catch, but those 3 drops were easy ones. He will need to upgrade those hands significantly if he wants to make a big impact. Running the ball he is far superior to anyone on this team. He could be a MONSTER.

Quentin Griffin looked about the same. Fully healed from that leg injury, but someone you can stop really easily.

Maurice Clarett impressed me today. He was running with intent and showed good short area burst. He did try to reverse his field once, which made me chuckle because he can't do that at the pro level. He showed average hands, often catching the ball with his body. He did bobble a touchdown pass in drills, but he ended up catching it.

Ron Dayne will not make the final roster unless every other back is injured.

Jake Plummer looked good. He was throwing quite a bit to Rod, who was putting on a clinic.

Danny Kanell looked horrible. He started out slow last year, but ended up winning the #2 job. We'll see if that holds true this year.

Matt Mauck looked great today. He was throwing a really nice ball with great touch and accuracy. He looked comfortable back there, making good decisions. However, he did not handle the blitz well.

Bradlee Van Pelt will be flipping burgers, or making a position switch soon. Every pass except one was fluttering after he delivered it. He was making poor decisions and throwing a lot of balls high. Leaving your receiver open to big time punishment won't make him very popular in the locker room. He threw a slant route where he stared down his receiver the whole way. Ball was snapped and Van Pelt stared right at Triandos Luke. He let him run a little bit and threw it to him. I think the cornerback was in shock because he was all over it. Maybe Van Pelt is using a reverse psychology thing. Make 'em think you're looking 'em off, then throw right where you're looking.

Chad Friehauf was a nice surprise. He is WAY taller than any other QB. He threw a nice, catchable ball.

Champ Bailey looked good except for a couple of bites.

Roc Alexander played aggressively, even getting Romar Crenshaw to push him in frustration.

Darrent Williams had better be the reincarnate of Brian Mitchell returning kicks because he was getting burned all day.

The entire LB corps looked good. I think "smoke dog" Al Wilson wanted to hit Clarett. Just a little love tap.

Courtney Brown looked decent. I think if healthy he could contribute opposite of Trevor Pryce.

Pryce looked like he was slimmed down quite a bit. That might help his back injury.

More insight straight from Broncos Camp tomorrow!

Broncos Training Camp Report Day Two 7/30/05

Defense was the name of the game today at Broncos practice. The pads come on tomorrow and that's when the real fun begins. Here's the way I saw it:

Champ Bailey played like a man possessed today. He had a great one handed interception (off a Van Pelt pass) that he returned for some good yards. In addition, he really took the receivers to task. He batted down several passes and shut down Rod Smith when he covered him. He also stripped the ball in a great move, ripping the ball away from Charlie Adams at the goal line, just as Adams had secured it. He had some comments on the enthusiasm coming from the defense today: "One thing about this game is you want to enjoy it while you are playing it. You don't want to be uptight and serious all the time. It's a serious business, but you got to have fun doing it."

Lenny Walls had a great day of practice, except for one play. Romar Crenshaw (who looked bad yesterday) put a great juke move on him to get open in one on one drills. Other than that, Walls looked great. He knocked away several passes as well, and had all of his defensive teammates excited with his play. He got under Rod Smith's skin as well, as most of the db's did all day. Coaches were praising Walls after nearly every play.

Roc Alexander continued his super aggressive play today. He is making a move for a nickel spot, and is doing a good job.

Darrent Williams struggled again today and dropped a few "F" bombs after he was beat on a long pass that went for a touchdown. I got to see him return some kicks today and he looked like a natural. He is very fast and it looks like his home will be on special teams until he can get used to the pro game.

Dominique Foxworth is progressing nicely and we should get a good look at him during preseason.

Nick Ferguson looked more comfortable in his SS role today.

"Smoke Dog" Al Wilson is a playmaker. He is probably itching the most to get the pads on. Here's what he thought about the Broncos LB corps: "On paper more than likely, we are definitely the fastest. But at the same time, we still have to execute, do our job, make plays and we have to take it to that next level if we want to be the best linebacker corps. "We are three fast linebackers who know how to get to the football, but if you don't know how to use that speed and execute, then it really doesn't matter."

Mile High Shack

Ian Gold looks fully healed from the injuries that have plagued him. He has great closing speed and is very familiar with this system. Al Wilson likes what he sees from Gold: "He's a guy that can fly around and make plays as well as a known playmaker around this league. It feels good to have him back...We are jelling fast - Myself, (linebacker) D.J. Williams and Ian. If we can stay healthy, we can definitely be the best in the business. It doesn't feel like Ian left. It feels as if he took a nice little break, but it feels good to have him back."

Trevor Pryce is working his way back from that back injury, and it's so far so good. At one point during practice he went to the side to work on technique with a D-line coach. When asked about the return of Trevor Pryce, Al Wilson had this to say: "It means so much simply because one on one he can't be blocked. He is another threat that we missed last year in the pass rush department. Having him back teaming up with the guys from Cleveland, plus the guys we had last season... I'm looking for a big year...40-plus sacks."

Courtney Brown rotated positions with Pryce at Defensive End. Brown still looked solid and good things are in store if he can stay healthy. The starters so far are Pryce, Brown, Warren, & Myers. The second string is Coleman & Engleberger at DE, and Fatafehi and Pope at DT. Wilson had this comment about the DL: "They look good. They have been getting pressure on the quarterback without us blitzing, and that's a big plus for our defense...It gives us an opportunity to do a lot more things on the back end. Getting those guys from Cleveland was a steal for us, and I truly appreciate them because it makes my job a lot easier."

Marco Coleman had a good practice today. He was really working hard out there.

Jake Plummer is still out there having fun. He looks very comfortable and is throwing some nice passes out there. I even saw him take off and scramble for a first down in 7 on 7 drills. He even threw a pass away when all his receivers were covered, rather than force the ball into coverage.

Kanell looked a little better today, but not by much. He did have a good sideline pass that Triandos Luke pulled in.

Matt Mauck had some throws that sailed on him a little today. He was still making good decisions with the ball.

Van Pelt is struggling big time. His passes didn't flutter as much, but he was still locking onto receivers, and threw the aforementioned pick to Champ. That pass was way off the mark and Bailey made him pay.

Mike Anderson is not going to just give up the number one spot. He was running with authority and making good cuts. He showed good hands as well. Bell is going to have his work cut out for him because Mike is making zero mistakes.

Tatum Bell had a good, but not great day. I love his moves and his vision. His speed is unquestioned, and he is gone when he gets to the open field. His hands looked a little better today, but I haven't been "blown away" by his performance so far.

Quentin Griffin did not practice today.

Maurice Clarett is having a good camp so far. Bobby Turner has really taken this kid under his wing and seems to always be in his ear. Clarett shows good burst, but gets winded too easy. Camp should whip him into shape.

Ron Dayne had a couple of nice plays catching the ball, although I still believe he won't make this team.

Jeb Putzier continues to impress. Both he and Alexander caught several slant and side out routes.

Stephen Alexander is playing his way towards some good playing time. Health is the major concern with him because he's certainly talented enough.

Wesley Duke had some drops on easy catches. Can you say Project? Clarett even had to show him some moves on footwork drills.

Nate Jackson is not showing the same kind of determination that he did when he was lined up at WR.

Rod Smith was still putting forward a grade A effort. He was frustrated at times by the DB's.

Ashley Lelie bounced back from a horrible day one. He actually had some nice routes over the middle and seemed to be more focused today. I wonder if he took a ribbing when they were reviewing the tape. He also seemed to have more zip in and out of his routes.

Darius Watts continued his progress and caught everything thrown at him.

Jerry Rice did not practice.

Triandos Luke had a good day. Not as good as he had yesterday, but he did go and get a pass on a "go" route that was a bit overthrown.

Todd Devoe had a decent day. Enough plays for his coaches to take notice.

Here's some comments from coach Shanahan: "(Wide receiver) Jerry Rice did not practice today. (Running back) Quentin Griffin did not practice as well, and there are about 10 guys that will sit out this afternoon. We have some guys that have a little bit of age, and we don't want to over work them. We also have some guys who are coming off of injuries, like (defensive end) Courtney Brown, (defensive end) Ebenezer Ekuban and Quentin Griffin. Those guys are in really good condition, but we do not want to put too much stress on them."

good article altho some of the stuff contradicts what khans been telling us.
- BVP is doing good, according to khan
- Clarett is doing horrible, according to khan

Who do i believe?? aahhhh, but most of its the same, so i guess its just what plays each guy saw i suppose..

A few of those observations seem to be in conflict with Khan's reports. The notes on the backup QBs and Nate Jackson, in particular. Interesting.

This is yesterdays report:

Our Footballguy Staff Writer Cecil Lammey is flashing his press credentials and brings us the inside scoop from the Bronco's Training Camp. These are his takes on what he saw today at camp.

The pads came on Sunday, and we finally got to see some real hitting for the first time. Let's start with some offensive observations...

Jake Plummer again had a good practice and was drawing the defense offsides with a barking signal. He had some nice passes and he's impressing me with his consistency. He got upset when Bell dropped an easy screen pass.

Kanell did nothing worth noting today.

Mauck had another solid day. He's still having trouble against the blitz, but had a nice scramble down the weak side of the field when everyone was covered.

Van Pelt looked like a deer in the headlights. He was also practicing on the punt block team, which I found to be rather interesting. A position change might happen sooner rather than later. He fumbled a snap that was recovered by the defense. He also was late on several passes, getting the ball there, but getting his receivers killed. The ball floated on him quite a bit and I didn't know if this was training camp or a duck hunt.

This is probably the best camp report I've heard so far.

I'm not happy with what I heard about Lelie. I've been one of his biggest supporters, and he's one of my adopted players. I'm going to have to get my belt out on him. Looks like my other adopted Bronco, Shanahan, already did. Lelie has two much talent to just be a "two route runner". He better get his head out of his ass. One 1,000 yard season doesn't mean he's arrived. 1,000 yards doesn't mean as much any more. This guy needs to be a 1300 yard+ WR.

I guess Champ is still biting on the fakes. That's the only flaw in his game. Nobody will straight up beat the guy. But a well timed fake can get him. He's too aggressive at times. As soon as he sees that fake he jumps the pattern and is looking for the ball. I like that he plays aggressive, but he can't do that unless he has a safety backing him up. Last year he didn't most of the time. If he has no safety help he needs to play a little safer.

I like that Roc is stepping up. He took major heat for that playoff loss. Looks like he's a man on a mission. I hope he can make things right and help this team.

I'm not shocked to hear the report on CB Williams. Sounds like he's going to be one of those players who sucks at their listed position, but is a great returner. Like Desomd Howard, Dante Hall, Jermaine Lewis. I'd almost put Gorden on that list, but he was at least a decent CB.

16-JakE-16
08-01-2005, 08:18 AM
Mike Anderson ran very well, and was solid in pass blocking. He had a couple of nice receptions as well.

Tatum Bell was running well in between the tackles. He had a couple of bursts to the outside, but again was a liability when catching the ball. I love his vision and instincts running the ball. His pass blocking was good.

Quentin Griffin practiced again, but fumbled twice. One was on an inside run, the other was after a screen pass. He also was stopped behind the line way too easily.

Maurice Clarett continues to be solid in camp. He was good running inside and doesn't dance. He just plows ahead and makes one cut in the second level. He's still getting winded quite easily and is not as polished a route runner as the other backs.

Ron Dayne completely whiffed on a pass block during a middle blitz. Kanell would've gotten killed if the QB could've been hit. He was spread out right, then came in motion to the backfield, DJ Williams was blitzing up the middle and Dayne was helping to the outside. DJ was all over Kanell before he knew what was happening. Dayne also got lazy on a run inside and had the ball stripped away from him.

Kyle Johnson looked really good blocking, but especially good receiving out of the backfield. Again, lots of spreading the TE's & FB's out wide and putting them in motion.

Putzier is rock solid blocking and had some good catches today.

Stephen Alexander had his worst day of camp today. Uncharacteristic drops on easy passes were the name of the game for him today.

16-JakE-16
08-01-2005, 08:18 AM
Nate Jackson played better today. I think he's having trouble adjusting to the TE spot, but could make the team to provide depth. He's currently 3rd on the depth chart. (Putz, Alex, NJ, Hape, Duke)

Rod Smith can make some breathtaking moves for a guy you don't really consider all that shifty. His moves are more subtle, but very effective.

Jerry Rice was back in action and had some good catches. Even with his all star route running, the younger DBs can still jump his routes on occasion. It's still a joy watching this man practice.

Ashley Lelie had a good day, and seems to be taking camp seriously now. I think his footwork needs to improve when he goes over the middle because he's opening his hips and giving away the route too soon. He does a nice job of pushing the route ever so slightly to the inside on a fade route outside.

Darius Watts had a down day for him. He bobbled a pass that was intercepted, and dropped an easy pass. He was consistently catching the deep passes and running by defenders. I saw him take a short hitch route to the house with a great reverse spin move after catching the ball.

Triandos Luke didn't do much today. Had a couple of decent catches.

Todd Devoe, now you know. This kid had another great day of camp. Drawing a big cheer from the crowd with a sideline catch that he fought away from the DB and went in for the TD. It was an underthrown Van Pelt pass, that Devoe made work.

Ian Gold is going to make the Pro Bowl if he continues to play the way he's started playing this year. He was all over the field and making plays behind the line of scrimmage.

D.J. Williams is making the change to the SAM backer pretty smoothly. He is quick, strong, and fast. His coverage skills are top notch as well.

Al Wilson was wreaking havoc today. He was already laying some licks on running backs and making his presence felt everywhere.

They played Patrick Chuckwurah in a rush end in a hybrid 3-4 scheme for the first time today. He was the "Willie McGinest" clone and they are using his athleticism in coverage as well.

The D-line played pretty good today. Trevor Pryce is officially back. He played good in run stopping and also was good in pursuing plays down from behind. He was giving the RB's fits, because it seemed he was in on every play.

Courtney Brown and Ekuban were held out of practice today.

Marco Coleman filled in and did a good job.

Myers recovered the fumbled snap from Bradlee Van Pelt. He seems to be a good fit here in Denver. He's getting upfield consistently and making the pocket collapse.

Gerard Warren isn't doing much of anything.

Champ Bailey had another great day. Several passes that he recovered nicely on and swatted the ball away.

Lenny Walls needs to stay healthy because he has all world talent. I like what I've seen from him so far and the Broncos would really benefit from him being there all season. He picked off a pass from a Watts bobble and had a deflection on a pass intended for Rod Smith.

John Lynch is awesome to watch. Nick Ferguson seems really comfortable complementing Lynch.

Roc Alexander was playing with the third team today. Perhaps his over aggressiveness is getting to the coaches.

Darrent Williams had a better day, but still isn't outplaying Dominique Foxworth. Both of them played with the second team and had a decent day.

i'd say enjoy reading both sets of comments but i bet there are 31 other teams reporting the same things.

I'm going to wait until the lights come on and we get to watch these guys in preseason to see who really is doing what. Honestly, i could care less how a wide receiver or QB looks in 7 on 7 drills. There is no pass rush.

A few things that are standing out when compared to Khan's reports.

Tatum wasn't really standing out in Khan's opinion... this guy thinks he's the cream in the puff.

Ron Dayne was looking great in Khan's opinion yet this guy doubts he'll make the team.

BVP looked great in almost all of Khan's reports. It seriously had me wondering if this guy was maybe confusing Mauck and BVP or something?

According to Khan, Darrent did a lot better in his second day.

Nate Jackson??? I thought he was doing a lot of good things on the field. Is it possible that this guy or Khan got confused? Maybe dude thought he was watching Alexander and it was actually Jackson or perhaps Khan thought he was watching Jackson and it was actually Alexander?

Good to know that Roc Alexander, Lenny Walls, MA, Darrius, and Jeb were all looking as good as Khan had reported.

Sounds like the DBs are doing a great job. I think Walls is going to have a breakout year.

I wonder what's going on with Warren. Of all the Browncos, he's the one that needs to show the most effort. The knock on the other players were that they had injury problems, not that they didn't put in the effort. Warren's problem has been the effort.

In year one, that is exactly what they expect of a second rounder. First rounder's very rarely start in DEN let alone Second rounder's. Down the road, hen he adjusts to the speed of everyone else in the NFL, he may become a good third or fourth CB.

Nap, if we were looking for somebody that was going to compete for a CB spot it would have made more sense to draft Miller. Shanny felt like Darrent was the best Return man in the draft and he probably is better than Perkins but didn't have the numbers b/c of a forearm injury. Add to that he is about .25 secs faster than Perkins in the 40. I believe DWill was in the low 4.3's and Perkins was in the mid 4.5's!!!

You'll have to find that 4.47 link for me. As I remember his 40 times were quite suspect and that's why he dropped from being a probably 2nd rounder. As for the school record 4.31... Kevin Jones was running a 4.2 at VaTech and couldn't muster anything below a 4.5 in his workouts for scouts!

Why not say something like...I hope you guys haven't found your own "X-man". Or it won't help you to find a good/great returner 'cause the Chiefs practise against a good/great one all the time.

Dwill was drafted because Denver needs help in the field position department. He was projected as a possible slot corner with the hope that he could be a ballhawk. So far, so good. Blame the sweat on the heat not your emotions, if it makes you feel better.

I expect much smarter stuff out of you than this Jason. Darrent broke his forearm in his senior season and has basicly been out of football for 11 months. This is a rediculous snap judgement by you. After what? Three practices? Give me a break.

To be fair to Jason... If Darrent can come in and be as good returning the ball as any of those three... He can suck as bad as he wants at CB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agreed with half of this report except the parts on Clarrett and Van Pelt. MC gets pushed around behind the line. He did a little better today, but I just don't see him where we need him to be. Van Pelt is the third quarterback, so this "deer in headlights" things is someting I didn't see and apparently neither did the coaches. It's possible he's got the wrong guy because Van Pelt switched numbers this year, I guess. You can't peg my rosey views of BVP on bias because I hated the guy coming in here. At least we agree that Kannell looks like garbage. Though how you couldn't is see that is beyond me.

If you watch the bronco video, even Adrew Mason points out that Nate Jackson has had several nice catches, and mentions some of Alexander's drops. I still think Nate has outperformed Alexander.

I guess its just like anything we debate here on the mane. Some people think a player is good, like a wide out, and blame the the QB when a pass is incomplete, and others blame the wideout and think the receiver is good.

One thing is for sure, though. I don't have a press pass and don't get to see everything on every field. During one part of practice, at least one team is completely blocked from my view, so take that for what it is.

Based on my time watching camp in the past, it appears you are seeing an incredible amount. Great Job!!!

The biggest difference in these two reports is on Wareen. Khan seems to think he's been a force, while this guy thinks he's a piece of garbage. I hope you're right Khan! Warren producing could be one of the keys to our season!

I really didn't put much faith in what Al had to say right here. Players will be loyal to their friends. Nice to hear an unbiased source who says Ian is looking good, too. I would love to see him make SoCal eat his words.......;)
