Hello Orange Crew! This is Kaylore posting from OF1 here to bring you your camp report and oh what fun we have for you. Let's start with the receivers.
The day started with receiving drills. We got a good look at the receivers and Quarterbacks.
Quarterbacks:
Plummer: He's doing a lot more audible work and throwing underneath more. He's going through all his progressions and very quickly. No picks and only a few off passes. His foowork is still good and he seems pretty confident.
Danny Kannel: He seemed to have an off day. the majority of his passes were errant and his drop backs looked awkward at times. He also made some bad choices and threw into tripple coverage at one point.
Matt Mauk: He looked really rusty. Not great accuracy and didn't really impress like last year.
Bradlee Van Pelt: He was, I'm ashamed to say, very solid. His passes were very accurate and he went through his progressions well. He rarely threw a bad pass. He didn't have as quick a release as Plummer but his footwork was almost as good.
Chad Friehauf: This kid will die if a mere corner tackles him. He's a total stick. He's got a big arm but needs some touch and is pretty rusty. He needs a lot of work. He knows the right plays and hangs his head everytime he makes a mistake. He makes the right plays, but his passes aren't very accurate and he guns everything he throws. He's just really raw. He's much more mobile than I would expect for someone 6'6"
The Wideouts:
The wideouts. I'm only going to post what stood out.
Rod Smith: Still looks good. He's lost some of his speed and quickness, but has little moves to get open. Shook most of his defenders and made most catches; even ones that were a little off.
Lelie: He looks real good. He did a lot of short quick patterns, come backs and crossing patterns. His button hooks really faked people out. He made some good catches and was able to get open relatively consistantly.
Watts: This kid couldn't be stopped. He gets so much seperation no matter who is covering him. He's so agile and quick and he's easily got the best body control of all the wideouts. He dropped a few passes, but those were errant, and for every pass he dropped (3) there were several more amazing catches that he made. He had one where the ball was tipped and as he was falling he reached around to tip the ball with one arm back into his chest and grab it as he hit the ground. He was being covered by Roc at the time and all the players applauded the catch. It was pretty sweet.
Jerry Rice: Zero drops. This guy can play and play well. He faked out half of the backs that he played against and got better with each one as he learned their styles. He's not fast (duh) but his footwork is the best of all the wideouts. He'll make the team.
Jeb Putzier: Great at finding the zone seams. No drops and actually shook off quite a few defenders. They were only playing touch, and he still was able to beat a few for extra yards.
Nate Jackson: He was easily the most impressive tight end in the pass game. He's so quick and matched up against linebackers or safeties he was eating them for lunch. He was real good at anticipating the ball and would look only at the last second. His obvious weakness will be blocking, but he's really solid in the pass game.
Average performances: Stephen Alexander, BJ Johnson, Wesley Duke, Patrick Hape
Showed flashes: Todd Devoe, Charlie Adams, Triandos Luke
Next post: D-Backs

D-backs
Champ Bailey: He did ok. It was very good but not what he's capable of. He beat most of his guys but missed a few times. One time he went for the pick and missed and it went for a TD (it was against Rod. I didn't know whether to be happy or upset). He still is the best a jamming them, knocking it away and staying with his guy all over the field. The guys he was covering rarely had a reception. He shoves them around like they're little girls. He had two forceouts.
Lenny Walls: Wow. You can tell its a contract year. He has a fast first step and his foot work in general is excellent. He didn't get faked out and would play real physical at the line. Where he really shined was knocking the ball loose right after the catch. His downfield coverage was still solid. He looks good.
Roc Alexander: Guys this kid is awesome. He had one of the two picks that day. He is so physical at the line and sticks with coverage. He's chomping at the bit. The Coaches were showering him with praise most of the day. Good red zone defense and plays downfield pretty well.
Brandon Browner: He muggs at the line, but he's good at it and does it within the five yards. Didn't see him play downfield too much. He just jammed everyone he was up against and usually won.
Dominique Foxworth: The second pick of the day was this guys. He was excellent all day but got faked out now and again. He plays the ball very well (obviously) and sticks with his man well. He looked really good in zone.
Karly Paymah: He was ok. He missed a lot of plays where they would fake him out.
Curome Cox: Some guy they picked up for training camp and you can tell he needs the money. He made plays all day. He was like a less-good version of Roc Alexander. I don't know anything about him, but he looked real good today.
The Safeties: Lynch and Ferguson looked good. They played a lot of cover two, so it was hard to tell what they are going to do. They did run a 3-3-5 formation with LeSeur as the third safety/nickle back. He was ok.
Running Backs: This was actually less exciting then I would have thought. the main starters are Mike and Taco Bell. Both looked good but Taco broke away to the outside more. No doubt Mike has better ability at moving the pile than Bell. Q looked slow and stiff at first but as he got warmed up he got better and faster. Still cuts ok. Maurice gets bounced around alot and makes dumb mistakes. He's learning. He needs to be better at running downhill. He waits a little too long behond the line and gets swallowed up.
And now...The D Yikes!

The Defense- Holy rusted metal Batman! A hot blond just showed up at the bus! Anyway, equally exciting, if not more, is the amazing Defense we have. Somehow I managed to "sneak" onto the side of the field the press was on and there I remained the rest of the practice. ROFL!
The D-Line: The Line was easily the best part of the defense. No, I'm serious. The line was colapsing every other play. It was really crazy.
Pryce was on fire. He got through three times, "sacked" Plummer twice and deflected a pass once. After he batted the ball Champ chewed him out for not picking it. He was like "You keep those ones, man." And Pryce was like "I thought putting my hands up was enough." This Bears fan was sitting next to me (Don't ask) and said "Who's that #93? He's really good." No ****. To be fair, one of the sacks was a missed block by the O-line, but still he got through two other times.
Marco Coleman: The other sack was courtesy Marco Coleman. He came through on a deep pass play and would have laid Plummer out cold. He's good at "bending" that side of the line except when Lepsis plays.
The Browncos: They were in and out a lot. So much that it was hard for me to follow. I can tell you this, though. Runs up the middle aren't going to happen agianst this D. That line closed up pretty tight and the few cracks that were open were filled with Al Wilson, Williams or Gold.
EngleBerger: This kid is quick and he'd mess up blocks because his swim moves are so crazy.
The Linebackers: You guys, if the D wasn't making all the plays, the linebackers would have looked better. They close so damn fast on the play it's ridiculous. They struggled a little bit in zone. Gold likes to show blitz a lot then drop into coverage. They did an all blitz at one point that our line totally picked up and Jake hit Putz for a fifteen yard gain. Other than that, there weren't any really missed plays. Every play up the middle had seven white shirts all over it in a matter of seconds.

Bradlee Van Pelt: He was, I'm ashamed to say, very solid. His passes were very accurate and he went through his progressions well. He rarely threw a bad pass. He didn't have as quick a release as Plummer but his footwork was almost as good.

The Special Teams.
I only got to see Sauerbrun and Ernster practice kicking.
Todd: This was hilarious every kick was a bomb. As he warmed up they started bouncing out at the twenty, ten, and eventually three. He sometimes kicks it too low where he would out-kick his coverage. Quite a few flew into the endzone as well, but as he went on, things got better. He can put different spins on them to make them bounce a certain way. Some of his punts were simply amazing. Probably the most impressive aspect of his game is his kick speed. As soon as the ball is snapped the thing is gone, and gone deep.
Ernster: He can kick it just as deep (and sometimes deeper) than Todd. Hoever he can't do so with nearly the same amount of consistancy. His accuracy wasn't as good either but he was better about having a higher hang time on the ball. The one way where Todd outshines him is in his speed. They did some quick snaps (for deep punt practice) and his fast kicks were not very good at all. He miffed a few as well. Overall there is a lot of talent there, but its raw and he nees some work.

The O-line: Unfortunately this was the one unit I watched the least due to where they practiced and when I finally got a chance to see them they didn't do very well. The D-line kept the cutback lanes pretty small and only Tatum and Mike were able to do much with them. The pocket was colapsing almost ever other play which really had me worried. One good thing is that Jake shook of a few would-be sacks and never threw a bad ball. You can see him go through his progressions and he does so quickly. He exploited several of the blitzes by hitting an open guy even if it was only for a few yards.
Ok that's it guys. Enjoy!

Roc only got a raw deal in the draft because of his character concerns, there were never any questions about his athletic ability... great pick up as an UDFA... hopefully Browner becomes similar. That colts game wouldve been different for him if we'd had a pass rush and run the ball.

I am telling you, Watts can be a star in this league. I called it during his career at Marshall. He has one of the best double moves in the game...period. He knows how to get open. He will be more consistent this year.

Hey, I'm back and I have a little time before I go in to work. :alghh: Let me answer some of your questions, and give additional thoughts.
On who is doing well at Guard: Honestly, I didn't get a good look. I 'll try and focus on that more next time.
On Darrent Williams: Not a good day he got beat a lot. He did better in zone, but against larger wideouts in man he just got tooled.
The Browncos: They were rotating guys in a lot. Some were switching possitions as well. The one thing that you all should be glad to hear is there was consistant preasure. That's something that was being missed last season: the pocket being mushed around. Pryce was the only blow-away standout. His thin frame will help him with injuries and give him a speed advantage. That that unit was playing well overall is enough for me anyway.
The nickle back: Roc and Foxworth were playing it. Someone asked about Roc playing deep and outside. They were actually triyng him across the middle and close and he did very well. I'm telling you guys he looks like he's beefed up because he was one of the most physical corners at the line and was jamming very well.
DJ Williams: This kid is balls to the walls every play. The play didn't ever really go his way, so I didn't get to see him make one, but he's crazy.
The Defense as a whole already is working really well with each other. Ther eis a familiarity and trust there that you can see. They look very comfortable with each other and talk to each other all the time. It really has me excited.
Important Caveats: This is ONE practice. This isn't a game. Some of this stuff we won't know about until preseaon games.

None. Not even shells. Shanahan doesn't like practicing with full pads, though they will do it a few time this year. Why, I have no idea. Marco Coleman says its harder w/out pads because you need more body control.

True True. With Training camp it is always good and bad news. The Dline looking great means Oline looking bad, Watts always open=DBS getting burned. It is encouraging to hear that Pryce seems to be fully recovered which is huge all by itself and if JE continues to show great pash rush skills than we are 2 DEs better off than last year.

Not to pee on anybody's parade... but how is it that Smith, Lelie, Rice, and Watts all looked really good... and so did Champ, Walls, Alexander, and Paymah?
You know what? Don't answer that. Training camp is the time that hope springs eternal and optimism can't be dampened.

I was curious, because the reality is...its pretty darn tough to tell who is doing what, without full contact. Its alot easier for a Dlineman to bust through a line when they aren't really being Hit.
The Glass half full theory is that the Dline is getting pressure because they're good.
The Chief fan perspective is that maybe your Oline is just worse zowie!

Not to pee on anybody's parade... but how is it that Smith, Lelie, Rice, and Watts all looked really good... and so did Champ, Walls, Alexander, and Paymah?
First of all, I said that Champ was ok, Walls and Alexander were good and Paymah wasn't that great.
All those wideouts you listed indeed looked good, but Watts impressed the most. I didn't say they were all amazing. Also, each receiver plays against each defensive back so you have many opportunities to shine.
You know what? Don't answer that.
Too late.
I'm just jealous that you're at your team's training camp. :)

The hope is always that one unit is making the opposing unit better and better as camp continues. We can always hope that the toughest test our O will face this year is in practice and all other teams D will seem slower because of it.

Am I the only one who thinks Mike will win the RB position. Bell just bounces out too often, and I'm not sure if he has the toughness to get the tough yards that we need on every play.
Who knows, we'll have to wait and see how it all pans out by the start of the season!

Excuse me while I wipe away the drool!

I read your post. I thought you did a pretty good job, from an unbiased(fanwise) perspective.
Its just tough to say who is really doing much of anything good, when in Defense drills, they're supposed to look good, and without pads, its pretty tough to tell what WOULD be a great Run/block/rush/sack et al.
Don't be such a chic and take a little ribbing. It is for your pleasure afterall.
Chief fans do the same darn thing from Camp........I enjoy reports like these over the crap the media gives, or the college broads they have telling me about the defensive Linebacker, Dalton.

That and he played with a 3rd degree sep. shoulder…so yeah…he’s tough enough to get the yards inside

From what they say MA looks to be in top shape, which is great but I still don't think he beats out Bell. Even so he means so much to this team. That man can still pound the rock and grind out tough yards late in the game. Really we have a great group of backs that can do damage in their own way. I can't wait to see what we do with them all.

Great reports.
If nothing else, Pryce sounds like he's recovered. That's huge.
To a lesser extent, ditto for Walls.
Sounds like the Nate Jackson conversion project might succeed if he can block.
Good news about Rice, FWIW. He might be worth keeping around just to school our young D-Backs.
Sooner or later, Foxworth is going to grab that nickel spot. I can feel it coming.
Watts sounds more & more like a Lelie clone. Let's hope his sophmore season is better than Lelie's was.

On Darrent Williams: Not a good day he got beat a lot. He did better in zone, but against larger wideouts in man he just got tooled.
Keep in mind, Darrent was injured the whole second half of his senior season, due to a broken forearm. So it's been well over a year and a half since he's played any football.

My favorite player, Eddie George, will be fine. I'm guessing he'll end up an Eagle, as they have expressed interest in him(as the Jaguars and Vikings have as well), and George is a Philadelphia native.
If he does retire instead, he jsut opened up the "27 Grille" restaurant in Columbus right down the street from the stadium, so I think he'll be fine regardless of what he wants to do.

The PM practice was pretty good the D really stepped it up, a fight broke out with Nalen and Al Wilson, Ron Dayne had the longest run of the day he broke one for about 50, and Darrent Williams had an outstanding day when they went 11 on 11, a pick two forced fumbles, Mike Anderson looked strong, Clarett was average had a fumble after a 12 yard gain (Williams) Plummer had a few batted down at the line and two picks, Champ looked real physical and Rice did not suit up in the afternoon (the only one). Lynch looked very sharp as well he had a great shot on Romar Crenshaw!!! THANK GOD FOOTBALL IS BACK!!!

Naw it wasn't really aimed toward anyone aside from people who are willing to insult what he eats for breakfast if they needed to.

Darrent Williams had an outstanding day when they went 11 on 11, a pick two forced fumbles, strong,
Not bad for a guy who has been out of footbal for almost a year. Just wait until he gets warmed up.

The O was starting out at the goal line so the protection broke down quickly, (can't give the Browncos rep yet) Bell looked very average, he never broke anything open, Clarett was enough speed to turn the corner, even though he got the ball slapped out of his hand after he made it. Kannel didn't do anything to hold onto the job today, Van Pelt showed promise in college he locked onto one receiver too much today he was taking to long going thorugh his progression, on one play in paticular Watts had burned Shoate right off the line and has open deep and also open in the intermediate, VP held the ball so long by the time he threw it to Watts he had to stop running turn completly around and squat to catch the ball. Plummer had a nice scramble up the middle after the D audibled a call named "Hooter" they all dropped back into deep coverage. Nate Jackson was the most pleasing suprise for me, he gained about 20 ponds of rip and was catchin everything thrown his way, Putzier had a few circus catches as well, Sapp looked bad at FB he was blown off his block very easy, and Q is going to have a hard time making it, one play he ran right into DJ Williams who was not even in an atheltic stance, he was standing striaght up and Q hit him and bounced off about three yards HARD! Lynch showed no hesitation diving into the hole, looks like the fear for the neck is gone, very quick feet as well, Rice caught some good stuff in the morning but went up against the rooks.

Anybody have any idea why Wilson and Nalen got into it?
BlueDamsel

Jay - I think Nalen was facemasking him, and wouldn't let go, so Wilson punched at him, and it just continued from there...I don't know if you can tell in the pics I posted, but I tried to take a few shots of the turmoil from that...
Edit: Pics of that: http://orangeforceone.com/photos/TrainingCamp/pages/DSCF1088_JPG.htm

Sorry, I didn't react fast enough to get the shot of the actual "rumble"

Yeah but this atleast shows that there is some good intensity. I would rather have them get along also but just trying to find the positive in it. Also they are atleast on other sides of the ball. I think when they get to this point they just get into it and then get over it so I hope its nothing to worry about.

That's my boy, DJ. I still dont get why Q cant break any tackles. I know he is small and all but he can bench well over 400 lbs. He has strength, but somehow it never manifests itself.

There was one other time after the fight when Wilson drove (I think) Mike Anderson to the ground and would not let him up to finish the 20 yards the Offense must run after each play, he came up to Disco, Meck and myself and said "Ain't this football?" I think the fight was more of a pride thing getting the D fired up and not allow sucess to anyone...including their own offense. I have used similar tatics coaching as well
Does this mean we won't be hearing about Mock's cat's antics for awhile?

Ya know at OU he had the largest line in college, he would just "squirt" out and the defenders had a hard time getting a bead on him because of that, by the time they saw him he was already past the LOS, Denver's smaller more atheltic line is harder to hide behind, he did not use a lot of zone-blocking type runs in college like Clarett or Dayne did, Q is strong but I think this is just a case where physics takes over, when 5'2 goes up against 6'2 245 something gives, Williams was all over the place today, very much in playing form, did not see a lot of Gold, he was on the field just didn't get involved.

The one bad spot I saw was Sauerbraun...he was kicking alright but after he shanked one he yelled out at the top of his voice Fuseek!! in front of many of the children and families in attendence, I don't mind too much lord knows I have said worse when I played and practiced but I was not being watched and admired by many kids, The fans pay to see you and suffer the heat, be a role model! set up and be a hero to some kids out there, they need heros, If a good role model keeps some kid from doing bad stuff or becoming a better person how can you not try?

His weight is a huge factor. Probably the biggest. Still he is insanely strong for his size.
And bench press means squat for running backs in a lot of cases.

You guys should check out the Broncos TV. Andrew Mason was standing two feet from me when he was filming. I got a chance to talk to him a little bit. This latest shows how dominant the D was today.

not to state the obvious to anyone
but
everyone knows defenses are way ahead of offenses in the preseason...right?
before anyone starts panicing about our offense already

It was hard to gauge, the morning session the linemen just rolled off of pads and stuff, the afternoon was all D. Like I said earlier the Off was starting out at the 5 so they were pinned back but lots of hurries and penatration, mostly pro-sets and 3-4 receivers sets, the D were in the nickel most of the time. Lasuer was the nickelback with the starters, it has a hard day all around for the o-line.

I wouldn't worry about Nalen and Wilson fighting...that's going to happen. MLB and centers seem to go at frequently.
It sounds so good and it's great to get some football news but as Shack said the defense is always ahead of the offense at the beginning.
BTW is Kyle Johnson 39...he looks huge in that picture of Nalen and Wilson arguing over who is going to pay for supper.

That's b/c you don't have kids yet... I like Sourbunz and realize that he is very competitive and drives himself. That being said, w/kids around he should be a little more consicious of his situation. Then again, how many times have you heard a batter drop the F-bomb after striking out in a game?
