Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Jerome McDougle was in critical condition after being shot in the stomach by armed robbers, police said Friday.
McDougle, 27, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he was undergoing surgery, Miami-Dade police said.
Three armed robbers approached the former University of Miami star at his silver Mercedes coupe late Thursday, police said. The suspects demanded the car, then fired their weapons, police said. McDougle was shot once in the stomach.
The robbers, who police said were likely teens, fled on foot and remain at large.
It wasn't clear whether McDougle was in his car or near it when he was approached, police said.
McDougle was a first-round pick in 2003, but has been plagued with injuries in Philadelphia. In two seasons, he had 18 tackles in 19 games, including two sacks.
McDougle had 114 tackles and 14 sacks in two seasons at Miami, and was a second-team All-American in 2002.

Gawd that is horrible. Hopefully they catch those thugs and drag them through the street.
Didn't realize McDougle was so old. He would have been a 25 year old rookie.

MIAMI -- Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Jerome McDougle was shot in the stomach by armed robbers, police said Friday. The team said he was in good condition after surgery.
He originally was listed in critical condition. However, Derek Boyko, the Eagles' director of media operations, said McDougle had spoken to team officials and was walking around his hospital room.
"Our understanding is that Jerome is in good condition after undergoing surgery," the team said in a statement. "At this time, we are still in the process of gathering the facts of his situation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jerome and his family."
McDougle, who played at the University of Miami, was due to be in the team's camp Monday, the reporting date for Eagles' veterans. Rookies reported Friday.

Between this and the injuries his rookie year that if I remember right kept him out half the season, this guy has had some really bad luck.

Looks like it could have been a lot worse but one of these little POSs couldn't shoot apparently.

Pretty remorseless in my day also but almost always, guns weren't involved in the remorseless activity.

Eagles player shot in stomach
McDougle expected to make full recovery
Saturday, July 30, 2005

The Philadelphia Eagles' chaotic offseason got worse hours before training camp opened yesterday.
Defensive end Jerome McDougle was shot in the stomach by armed robbers late Thursday night, Miami police said. The Eagles said McDougle was in good condition after surgery, and coach Andy Reid was optimistic the former first-round pick would play this season.

"We're told it [the bullet] didn't hit any major organs and that's a plus," Reid said. "From the indication we have now, he will be able to come back."
This was just the latest distraction for the defending NFC champions, who've dealt with Terrell Owens' bitter contract dispute since losing to New England, 24-21, in the Super Bowl almost six months ago.
Rookies and some other players reported to Lehigh University for the start of camp. McDougle was due Monday with the rest of the team.
"It's crazy," linebacker Mark Simoneau said. "You don't ever expect that to happen to someone you know, especially a teammate. Our prayers are with him and his family. It's got to be tough on him. It seems like it's been one thing after another since he's gotten here."
Selected with the 15th pick in the 2003 draft, McDougle's first two seasons in Philadelphia were marred by injuries. But he was expected to move into a starting role.
McDougle's absence leaves the Eagles thin on the defensive line. Hugh Douglas, a part-time player last year, and N.D. Kalu, who missed last season with a knee injury, are the most experienced backups at the end spots.
"I'm glad he's alive and doing well," Reid said. "You don't ever want to see anybody get shot, particularly someone close to you. He spent a lot of time up here this year. He was in good shape."
Miami police said the confrontation started when three armed robbers approached McDougle, 27, in his silver Mercedes coupe late Thursday in southwest Miami.
With their faces covered, the suspects demanded that he hand over his property, then one of them shot McDougle in the stomach, police said. Police said the robbers didn't say what property they wanted.
McDougle opened the door and tried to get out of the car, but another robber fired two shots, which police said missed McDougle and hit the inside of the door.
The robbers, who police said were likely teens, fled on foot and remain at large. It wasn't clear whether McDougle was in his car or near it when he was approached, police said.
McDougle was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he had surgery.
Joining McDougle at the hospital yesterday was his older brother, Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Stockar McDougle, who had been excused from practice. Dolphins coach Nick Saban said he didn't know exactly how long Stockar McDougle would miss practice, but the six-year veteran would have some leeway.
"His personal family situation comes before what's going on here," Saban said.
McDougle's shooting took the focus off Owens, who dominated the headlines the past few months by loudly protesting because he wants a new contract just one season into the seven-year, $48.97 million deal he signed.
