"Although the Vietnam War showed our enemies how to defeat us, we can now show them that we learn from history. Effective homeland security must focus both on convincing our enemies that they can never win, and convincing the American people not to give up no matter what we suffer.

Our military personnel, who put their lives continually on the line, have a right to expect no less a commitment from us. It is also the only path to victory."

What a load of unmitigated crap. Blame the media. Blame the American people. Whatever you do, never blame the leadership of this country.

This reminds me of the Scottish rebellion. The soldiers on the ground saw, time and again, that their leaders would sell them out in a heartbeat if the English crown offered that leader an Earldom or fief, which is exactly what they did. They figured out that their leaders didn't exactly hold to the same values that they did. So, why risk their lives? We should blame the soldiers?

Vietnam was lost because it was meaningless, stupid, based on lies, unnecessary, and a waste. JFK, just before he was shot, admitted that he realized we were stuck in a civil war that was none of our business, would have no effect on Soviet hegemony in the region and that the Domino Theory was full of flaws. He was committed to pulling out after re-election. By the time Nixon was prez and 50,000 Americans had died, the American people realized this as well. Thirty years later, Robert MacNamara, the architect of Vietnam, realized it as well.

The Iraq War is a lie. Based on lies. Executed by liars. Another useless waste. How many years before the American majority opens their eyes? How many years before the architects of this war write their confessions?

The war on terrorism is winnable. Almost too easily. Bush's line, "They hate us because of our freedoms" is the same kind of lie that the Domino Theory was. They hate us because we use our power to prop up tyrannical regimes (Saudis, Egypt, etc.) that use that power to deny their people a future; regimes completely opposed to everything America stands for. Why do we do it? Oil. Where do the billions of dollars we pour into Saudi Arabia go? Palaces. Rolls Royces. Jets.

Fundamentalism springs from hopelessness. Suicide is an act of hopelessness. Why has India succeeded in the war against fundamentalism? They've given people jobs. A man with a job is not likely to bomb a bus. A man with hope for a future is not going to go live in a cave in Afghanistan with some nutjob anarchist.

News flash: Latest statement from National Geo "If one quarter of the rooftop and pavement space of the U.S. were covered with solar panels, all of the electricty needs of the U.S. would be met."

We sell our souls for oil and reap the whirlwind.

National Geo better get to work then. Also begs the question, is your house solar powered?

I don't know about where you live, but here every bit of pavement is necessary, traffic sucks already. Oooh, better idea. We can put the panels in the middle of National Park land. If we converted 1/8 of national park land would that meet our national energy needs?
