Nuggets coach Karl to undergo surgery

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl is scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday in Utah for prostate cancer, a team official told the Rocky Mountain News on Tuesday.

The official believes Karl's cancer was caught in the early stages. The surgery will be performed at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah.

Karl, a veteran NBA coach, took over as Nuggets coach during the 2004-05 season. Under Karl, the Nuggets went 32-8, finished with a 49-35 record and made the playoffs, where they were eliminated by San Antonio in five games.

What a horrific disease. It's bad enough to have some doctor stick a finger up your ass, but must be worse to become impotent, go thru chemo and die for your trouble.

Karl is a good guy and a good coach. He's not Mr. Charisma, but he's a good guy, I think...I would never wish cancer on anyone. Carrying my father around like a baby was something that will never go away. That was something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, that's just something you carry the rest of your life.
