Any metal fans?
I went to Ozzfest on Sunday, hot as fvck. Gripe-how many double bass pedal crunch riffs with indistinguishable grunting bands can there be? I honestly couldn't tell the difference between most of the bands. The standouts on the second stage were Killswitch Engage (a kind of Sevendust thing happening) Gizmachi, Soilwork, and Rob Zombie (tore the place up). I was in the pit for Killswitch and Zombie, well not in the pit, more at the front. Kids today have no metal etiquette, people would go down and get trampled, really pissed me off. Gotta get'em up boys and girls. The heat was unbearable, Zombie almost passed out on stage. I'm one of the lucky ones, 6'2" 270 lbs so I could get air and impose my will to create breathing room. But damn, it was tough. Like a brawl, but good times. Jada Pinkett Smith (Wil Smith's wife) has a band in the show...sucks. Worst voice ever, high pitched shrill screaming that made dogs howl for mercy.
The mainstage standouts were Mudvayne Black Label Society, and Iron Maiden. Maiden flat out stole the whole show, best of the day. Actual vocal melodies and kick ass guitar riff harmonies, like I ever had a doubt. They totally schooled the young'uns in metal. Bruce Dickinson's voice is still tremendous. He hits all of the notes after 20 yrs. His energy is astonishing and there is nobody better at working a crowd. They played songs off of their first 4 albums because of time constraints. They need to bump one of the acts off the main stage and give Maiden more time. At the beginning, the kids seemed to be listening to them more out of historical curiosity but by the end the place was absolutely humming with positive energy and crowd participation. It was great. Ozzie needs to hang it up or take his act to Vegas. He was off key, out of tune and suffered memory lapses in his lyrics. Quite disappointing. All in all, Maiden made the day. Zombie was great to see live and I was pleasantly surprised by Killswitch Engage. Soilwork was good to see too. All the bands I liked actually employed some vocal melody somewhere in their sets and songs. It's a nice contrast to the heavy grunts and crunch chords and gives the music a nice dynamic. Any others out there seen the show?

I can absolutely understand that. I liked Metallica up until Cliff Burton died. Justice for all was a solid enough album but the Black Album or whatever the fvck it is called was an absolute insult. I throw up in my mouth a little every time I think of it...kind of the same way for every Metallica album since.

Here's another indication I'm old. Rob Zombie is the only "newer" act I recognize from that lineup. Iron Maiden rocks, though... :militia:

And they did not disappoint. Dickinson's voice is still album quality. Same as you heard on Killers, Number of the Beast, etc. I'm still blown away, 20 years of knocking out that sound and his voice is still awesome. The guitar riffs were tight, consumate professional performers. Fvcking rocked. They alone were worth the price of admission, everything else was gravy.

Good to hear! I'm glad they were playing the early albums.

No prob. If you're a fan of early stuff they also played Phantom of the Opera, which they rarely do live...anymore.

Mudvayne was good. I've been luke warm to their stuff but seeing them live gave me a new appreciation for their energy. Their stuff was tight and their background vocal melodies were sharp and on key. I don't know if their sound guy was better or if their drummer was that much better than the previous band (I suspect the latter), but their kick bass was really sharp and they had a nice groove working that wasn't just an angry noise barrage. Good distinction. Shadows Fall was on before them and I was not impressed...at all, but they may have had a bad day. But like I said, the bands that utilized even a little bit of vocal melody, even as background vocals, really set themselves apart for me. I was just wishing they had put Sevendust on the bill and it would have been awesome.
If you like Maiden and Mudvayne the GA ticket is worth it.

Good to hear maiden are still kicking arse. I loved Brave new world and Dance of Death had a few good songs. Man what happened to them in the 90s? Ever hear that song they did called Futureal? It is absolutely the worst crap I have ever heard.

Matt McDonough of Mudvayne is an unbelievable drummer, guy can play like no other. I've been a big Mudvayne fan since LD 50 came out in 2001, and have never been dissapointed in their work.
I'm finally getting to see them on August 3rd, they're headlining a show at Tower City Ampitheatre here in Cleveland along with Trivium, Shadows Fall, and In Flames. It's been 4 years waiting to see them live and I will get to go now, this will be a kick ass concert.
I jsut wish that they still painted their faces and all, but I'll take it as long as they keep playing their music. Thier new CD has not left my CD player since I got the weekend that it came out, it's that good.

Yeah, I was impressed. Shadows Fall was pretty blah...for me anyway. It was a lot of rage and little substance. I didn't really see In Flames because I was in the pit for Zombie and they opened the main stage immediately. So by the time I got myself together and over to the main stage they were almost done with their set and I didn't really get a chance to give them a good listen. I listened to Shadows Fall basically waiting to hear Mudvayne...everyone was buzzing about them so I figured that should warrant a good listening to and I wasn't disappointed. My most pleasant surprise was Killswitch Engage. Black Label Society was pretty kick ass too. All in all I'm pleased with the Ozzfest day. It opened slow but picked up steam nicely.

I like Killswitch Engage a lot, would love to see them in concert one of these years. Last year's Ozzfest was very good, so I imagine with the line-up they have this year that it would also be good.
Last year the 2nd stage was awesome, Lamb of God, Atreyu, Unearth, Bleeding Through, and Hatebreed were all just sweet. Judas Preist was decent and Black Label was pretty good on the main stage, but I mainly just hung out at the 2nd stage listening to the bands there.
Been to 2 ozzfest's, 2001 and last year, Mudvayne was on the 2nd stage in 2001 but weather and traffic made me miss them, I was psised to say the least. I only caught the main stage for that one mostly, got to see Spineshank and Drowning Pool on stage 2 but that was it. Papa Roach, Disturbed, Linkin Park, and Marilyn Manson were on the main stage(and of course Ozzy), Linkin Park sucked as did Papa Roach(although they almost started a riot because before they played the song "Broken home" the lead singer told the crowd to beat the **** out of anyone sitting down, and some people obliged), disturbed was pretty damn good and Manson absolutely rocked. Say what you will about him, but that guy can put on a show, very good and very entertaining.
I'm gonna miss it this year because I'm going to the Mudvayne concert instead, so I wont have the money to go to both, also have tickets to go to the Ohio State vs. Texas game so that really took a bite out of my account. Would love to go but just can't for those reasons.

Was this on his own material, with Sabbath or both?? (Is Sabbath even there this year??)
PTI but I really don't know...I haven't travelled in metal circles in years, I think because it's much too tight a genre for me.....I like a sloppy, feedback drenched groove, the faster the better of course...but that's just me....picture Sabbath's "Supernaut" sped up and you'll get the idea of what I'm talking about.

Yeah I know, I own the Chemical Wedding and it is better than anything Maiden have done since Seventh Son. Even the 2 Maiden albums in the 90s with Bruce sucked bad. Losing Adrian Smith in 1990 hurt them bad, glad he's back in the fold as well.

You may dig bands like Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin, Trouble, Candlemass and Fu-Man Chu. They are all Sab worshippers and have a very cool stoner rock vibe.

They were playing the Sabbath set. The upside is Tommy Iommi was playing with them. You might dig Black Label Society they have a good sound.

And their stage show still rocks. Maiden did lose their way, but I think they've decided to get back to what works and having a good time. I can't speak highly enough of their live performance.

To say the least. The previous band was Bury your Dead and on their last song they mentioned they would have a little help. This little person rolls up their and we thought it was Little Bow Wow (we were lurking in the back) and Wil Smith also came out....turns out it wasn't lil bow wow. Her vocals were brutal. She tried to get with the screaming but it was not working out too well for her. Her band wasn't bad but they need to find a new vocal sound. She may be a decent vocalist, but they need to craft a new sound to fit her voice.

I think what may have been driving at would be the diversity of the crowd. I'll admit, it was pretty white. But with some of the freaky deakies in that crowd I can honestly say most of them probably don't care what color your skin is....just who has the most sh!t pierced through it. ROFL!
Incidentally, speaking of blacks in metal, Sevendust kicks ass. That is all.
