Rod Smith, Tom Nalen and DJ Williams are only 1/100th better than Ian Gold.

Champ Bailey played like a 75.
exactly...Champ had a few problems adjusting to the new rules last year. Here's hoping for a better year from him...

You have to pay for this kind of information. Only the Insiders get to know that Rod Smith and Tom Nalen lack the qualities to be solid starters.

Champ Bailey 93
Its always comical to me when you see someone trying to assign point values when ranking players. Champ Bailey rated 93 as a cornerback last year. What kind of scale are we talking about? Did another corner rate a perfect 100? If not, then we must assume the person who does this rating system has an ideal cornerback in mind. Maybe Deion or Night Train or perhaps some mythical perfect cornerback, who never gets beat.
I wonder if the guy sat there and mulled over Champ's score for awhile before he assigned the final grade. Was he maybe leaning towards a 94, maybe a 92, or was it just plainly obvious to him that Champ played 93 caliber cornerback last year?

Well, obviously Slap, unsophisticated amateur statisticians like yourself could never understand the complexities of the ESPN rating system. We are talking NASA scientists here. Complete objectivity. Every play scrutinized to the last step. Maybe one day you can fathom the sea of variables in elegant motion but for now you just need to take what Salisbury gives you, close your mouth, and be grateful that you are granted the opportunity to at least look at (if not understand) such brilliance.
Seriously though, I think that there is a positional ranking system where the 'statistician' explains the variable values.

You have to imagine there was some scientific method applied to create these rankings...I mean besides three interns playing Madden '05

With some of the junk that comes out of ESPN, I wouldnt be surprised if it was based on Sean Salisbury playing Madden.
One would hope that ESPN has legit statisticians who are knowledgeable about football. Most of the stats guys that I know are academics or are involved in business computations. It takes alot of legwork to make a quality analysis, and for some reason, I just dont see ESPN putting in that effort. I could be wrong though.

ESPN has become such a pool of goo the last ten years.
Everything is so yuk-yuk, I'm hardly ever certain when they're joking or being serious
Oh, and Joe Theisman is to football analysis what Osama bin Laden is to world peace

I just read that DJ had 50 tackles a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an INT in the month of December. As a rookie.
And he's "good?"

And he's "good?"Most sites that give out player ratings don't rate rookies that high. I love DJ and wanted the Broncos to draft him or Jon Vilma before that draft, but let's see if he plays at high level a few more years before we put him in with the Al Wilson's of the world.
