Terrell Owens the Eagles' reluctant receiver is reaching for the sky, invoking
Jesus in his contract squabble. Asked about his contract problem with the
Eagles, Owens didn't invoke the name of Curt Flood or even NFL free-agency
pioneer Reggie White. He went right over their heads. Waaaay over. "At the
end of the day," Owens told the Miami Herald's Jason Cole, "I don't
have to worry about what people think of me, whether they hate me or not. People
hated on Jesus. They threw stones at him and tried to kill him, so how can I
complain or worry about what people think?"
The Chiefs upcoming season will be billed as the Dick Vermeil farewell tour,
whether the Chiefs coach likes it or not. Hell like the theme a lot better if
the season becomes a victory tour, too. Vermeil, as you might expect, doesnt
want his coaching future to become an issue. Coaches dont like distractions,
especially when they are the distractions. We havent discussed Dick Vermeil
coming to the end of his career, the coach said recently. If we dont win, I
should leave. If we win, then Ill have to decide. Will Vermeils status affect
the Chiefs one way or another? Its hard to say. Players whove been with him
through much of his stint in Kansas City would love to send him out a winner. I
prematurely left one team after the 1999 season, Vermeil said. I dont want to
do it again.
The Bucs are $1.4-million under the salary cap and need about $6-million for the
rookie salary pool. Chief among players expected to go is tackle Todd Steussie,
who did not participate in the final two weeks of voluntary workouts and was
asked not to attend the Bucs' mandatory minicamp. But with right tackle Kenyatta
Walker still recovering from a knee injury and several rookie offensive linemen
unsigned, the Bucs might consider keeping Steussie as a safeguard if he agrees
to restructure his contract, which would pay him $2-million in base salary this
year. "There's a chance (he'll be back)," Allen said of Steussie.
"I'm in dialogues with his representative. Heav: What a mess this
organization has become.
With training camp less than two weeks away, Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis
wants to clear the air. He said any characterizations about him being
disgruntled about his place on the team because of the switch to the 3-4
defense, or him having a problem with Cowboys coach Bill Parcells because of a
heated discussion between the two in June are off-base. Ellis said he has been
assured by Parcells and owner Jerry Jones that he remains a big part of the
Cowboys' plans.
The Vikings are considering adding a veteran running back and have been in
contact with the agent for running back Eddie George, who saw limited action
with the Dallas Cowboys last season, rushing for 432 yards on 132 carries.
Brian Levy, who represents former Titans safety Lance Schulters, a free agent,
said nothing has changed in discussions with the Dolphins. "We'll see what
happens this week," Levy said.
During Mini camp both Keyshawn Johnson and Terry Glenn lead the way for the
Cowboys recievers once again, both having fully recovered from foot injuries
suffered last season.
