Hey, we don't have enough DL's... :injured:
Rumors persist that the Cowboys will dump either Greg Ellis or LeRoi Glover soon, possibly both. Some internal buzz down here is suggesting that it will be Ellis, who has led the team in sacks the last four years, averaging better than 6 a year. Last year he had 9. He's missed only 4 games in 7 years with injury and has been their most consistent linemen on some really crappy teams. Apparently Parcells is unhappy with Ellis because he's not considered suitable for the 3-4 defense, (sound familiar), which they are switching to because they think #1 pick Marcus Deware (whose never played LB) is the next Lawrence Taylor and because BP is suffering from early onset Alzheimers and is starting to lose his mind.
If there's one thing we need it's more D-linemen...with only what...18 or so in the fold, why not see what Ellis would cost? He made $2 mill last year, about the same as Raylee Johnson and Luther Elliss combined, so we could dump those guys and bring him in, plus he probably wants out of Dallas so maybe he'd take a pay cut...don't know what his 2005 salary is...maybe trading Terry Pierce who apparently isn't going to play here anyway would get him. The Cowboys need big LB's. Maybe he'll just get cut. Nine man rotation:
Pryce, G. Ellis,
Warren, Fatafehi
Pope, Meyers
Brown, Ekuban, Engleberger
There are 5 potential pass rushers in that group of DE's. With Brown's injury situation uncertain and Pryce coming off a surgery, it obviously makes sense to load up on DE's who can rush the passer.

Is Dorsett Davis a 3-4 capable DT?

Yeah he's big enough to play an end in 3-4. 6th rounder anyone???

Can Luther Elliss play the DE? Parcells likes 'em old...ala Vinnie.

Great thought lama.
Davis for Leroi or Greg Ellis....I'd do that in a heart beat.
DO IT!!

They drafted LSU's Marcus Spears in the 1st round. He's a 300 pound DE...they won't trade Ellis for Davis but they might for Pierce. Glover makes a lot of $$, I think around $3-4 mill. We'd have to cut about 4 guys. He'd sure look good next to Warren though...pass rushing DT with a high motor and a pro bowl history.

Glover makes 3 mil this season and 4.5 next season.
Ellis makes 2.25 this season, 2.25 in 06, 2.5 in 07, 3.325 in 08, and 4.15 in 09.
What Shanny better be thinking about is a way to solve the problems that the 3 4 defensives create for our O.

What Shanny better be thinking about is a way to solve the problems that the 3 4 defensives create for our O.
Play-Action-Fake AFTER you have established the run, then attack the Medium-Deep middle of the field. Deep-slants and TEs down the field. Sharpe used to excel at this, against any defense.
I guess the trick would be a REAL sledgehammer of a Fullback, so we can gain positive rushing yards regardless of the down/situation, and Accuracy from the QB.
After that, its just execution. I am sure Shanahan has many, many plays just to combat the 3-4. If he had foresight enough to take advantage of all these excess 4-3 linemen, I am sure he has been working hard at the playbook also.
Just think about it, if we can (beforehand) problem solve and figure out the 3-4 defense, our Offense would be one up on almost the rest of the league. Our Team would be one up on the rest of the league. You could look at it as a weakness for (most of) the rest of the League, A weakness that we could EXPLOIT!!

Ellis could very well start for Denver ahead of Brown.

Dallas's front seven is going to give us fits on Thanksgiving. They did a tremendous job bolstering their front seven in the draft. That might be the best front seven draft ive seen in awhile, especially for a 3-4. DeMarcus Ware bringing the heat from the outside, Marcus Spears drawing double teams and stopping the run at end, Kevin Burnett going from sideline to sideline. This is a great trio and all of them will hurt our run game and perimeter passing game.

Inexperience and a new system is in our favor.

I would rather face rookies Ware and Spears than Glover and Ellis.
Give me the rooks any day.

Yes that will help us, especially with Kevin Burnett. LBs have to think alot. But with Ware, he is going to be exclusively a pass rusher as a 34 OLB which is his forte so i dont think inexperience is an issue since his duties will be limited. A big monster like Spears worries me going up against our smaller line. That game is going to be a dogfight. That's the furthest thing from an easy win. We are going to be clawing and scratching for 4 quarters. Dallas is going to be a good team this season if they can get some halfway decent QB play.

Well, if our new D Line can put any pressure on Bledsoe, we should be alright. He has had the deer in the headlights look the last couple of years.

Yeah i like our defense matching up with them. Julius Jones is a threat (and yes Nappy you did call him being good, props) but i like our front seven on defense against the run vs. just about anyone. Reading between the lines of some of what Trevor said, our DL will be playing a little more 2 gap defense with the goal being to keep people off of the LBs as opposed to just getting after the QB. It wont be 2002 by any means but i think the team is going to primarily use the line to keep people off the LBs with the exception of using Trevor on the weakside to get after the QB and some schemes for Warren to do the same. That said, if they can protect the LBs, we will shut down most people in the run game. Jason Witten had an excellent year for a TE. Wasnt talked about much but put up off the charts numbers last year. I think D.J. can hold him in check. If we can do that, im not too concerned about the rest of their weapons.
Dallas is a real sleeper though in my opinion.
