Broncos work while others play
By Adam Schefter
Special to NFL.com
Adam Schefter's "Around the League" reports and commentaries can be seen regularly on NFL Total Access.
(July 14, 2005) -- While every other team in the league was vacationing, resting, napping and enjoying what was left of its summer, the Denver Broncos were going through their modified version of an early Labor Day.
At the Broncos training complex, they were laboring away.
Now, ordinarily, mandatory minicamps in July are about as common as snow in August. They just don't happen. But Broncos coach Mike Shanahan might have stumbled onto something as novel as the five wide-receiver sets he began using during the 1997 season.
Shanahan pushed back his team's mandatory minicamp, weeks past the times when every other team holds them, to a time much closer to training camp. Here was his thinking:
Put players through football-conditioning drills closer to training camp so that when they report, they will be in better shape. Start installing the playbook closer to training camp so players remember more once they report. Break up the summer break so players don't have one long six-week layoff to fall out of shape and into trouble.
What about this doesn't make sense? It makes so much sense that, in this copycat NFL league, where more and more teams are installing the 3-4 defense, where more and more teams are staging training camps at their home training facilities, this could be the next big trend.
And if they want, they can even copy another of Shanahan's twists. On the final day of the Broncos' three-day mandatory minicamp, Shanahan cancelled his team's practice. Instead, after two long days of drills, he rewarded his players for good behavior. He took them bowling.
When the players heard Shanahan's plan, there was cheering in the locker room that was almost loud enough be heard around the Rocky Mountains.
Clearly Shanahan's idea -- every part of it -- was a strike.

Schef is the only member of the Denver media/ex-players to make it national and not cave in to the "I must bash where I came from so my takes seem credible" pressure. I applaud him for it. Guys like Sharpe and Schlereth seem to go out of their way to bash the Broncos, because they feel if they don't, everyone will assume they're just being homerish and no one will listen to what they have to say. This is wrong IMO. Just tell it like it is and people will respect you a lot more.

I miss him too. I know several folks on here liked to bash him when he was around, but as the saying goes, "You don't know what you got until it's gone." Ol' Adam was a good beat reporter and was a day or two early with news on several signings and moves. But his food reviews were rather odd, I must admit.

It was an ok story, but I think he overestimated the value of something like this. 3-5 defenses are things that can change the outcome of a game plan. Camp and going bowling are more general things that affect morale and general ability, but it would be hard to make a claim that "we won this game because mini-camp was in july!" or "Lelie cought this ball because BJ Johnson bowled a 270!" Anyway, I don't think everyone is scrambling to copy this move.

You don't think they looked at the fact that he was good on film and that he was good looking. Do you think they would have considered hiring some fat slob like Fatsquerelly? Hell, no. He got the gig because he was the closest thing to an actor that they could find.

No, he got the gig because he's a good beat reporter...and doesn't look Shrek, a plus for TV. NFL Network pulls their stars in for the studio round table crap. Ol' Adam is mostly off somewhere reporting in...and about the only guy doing actual reporting for the show. There's a difference between a studio talking head, and the guy they empower to break a few news stories around the league.
You can say he is an ego hound, his personality might rub you the wrong way, he was wrong for his notorious "Bledsoe story" and silly food reviews, but the guy was as solid as you can get as a beat reporter with many well developed relationships with those front office brass and coaches in the know. That's what makes someone a good beat reporter...and that's what he is/was. If you try to say he is a horrible beat reporter...well, I'd say you have an axe to grind and have a bias. You can not like him as a person, but the dude is a good beat reporter. And the job of beat reporter isn't as easy as you'd like to make it sound.

Really? Shefter may not live up to your expectations bub, but the one thing he did have was contacts and the ability to get the news that few other reports could out of Dove Valley.

Adam did a great job of getting scoops and regularly wrote. That's about the only two ways he is different from Williamson. To quote SSJ, the only scoops that Williamson gets are of the ice cream variety. Schefter did a better job and was more in depth at reviewing food than answering fans questions. His answers were simplistic and things that a common member of this board would have known for weeks if not months in advance. He also had a very patronizing tone in his responses to fans. I dont need to read his mailbag to know that "the Broncos have high hopes for Muneer Moore". When it wasnt common sense stuff, it was homerism. "There is a reason why the Broncos feel Billy Miller can be a star tight end in this league". Sorry, id rather read about rose flavored water and slightly buttered pear scones that are to die for, as gay as that sounds. I dont want to hear 2nd grade responses with a pissy tone about basic crap. Now in fairness to the Shyster, even in those mailbags, while what he wrote was crap, there was more of it than what Williamson writes. Williamson does his mailbag whenever he wants to, there is no set time. Its supposed to be on Fridays but he skips months at a time and his responses are short and are crap.
At NFL network, he isnt telegenic at all. He seems a little uncomfortable when he is schmoozing with Rich. He isnt made for television. That said, he does a very good job of detailing NFL scoop when he is on there with Rich.

I agree with you that Schefter did some things very well, but just because Williamson is the biggest waste of space this side of Mark Kiszla doesnt magically translate Schefter into something better than what he was. He still wasnt as good a writer as Saunders when he was at the DPO.

I think he leaked that Denver was interested in Bledsoe during the summer of 2002 when Shanny must have told it to him with the idea that it was off the record. It then created a bit of a ruckus because there was speculation that due to that comment there was no faith in Griese etc. Shanny later put up the pathetic excuse of "oh yeah we were interested in bledsoe, if he could come for free, we would be interested in anyone if they could come in for free" trying to make it seem like nothing.

As lame as the Shyster is, between his food reviews and almost dying when he tried to run a marathon, running up a donation total similar to a lemonaide stand, then laying in ICU with renal failure (which no doubt cost multiple times what he raised), I didn't think it was possible, but Williamson is exponentially worse. I actually miss Woody. At least he knows comedy. He doesn't know anything about football, but at least he's funny.
Williamson, master of the obvious:
The Broncos hope their aquisitions of rejected Browns linemen will shore up their line. Tatum Bell hopes to stay healthy. Jake Plummer will try to cut down on his interceptions. Q is on track, almost fully recovered from his ACL. Willie Middlebrooks is rumored to be on the trading block. Trevor Pryce says he's fully recovered. stop.
His stuff reads like telegraph.
It wasn't his food reviews that made him an ass.
It was his ability in every freaking article to talk about how hard he worked.

This is all marketing. This guy almost croaked trying to run a marathon because he was wearing dark sweats. You should get a clue when others are running in shorts and taking water. Do you think we watched Jimmy the Greek and Madden because we like their hairy asses? It was literally rape.
The latest adventure was Steven A. Idiot stroking Detroit the whole NBA finals. You talk about someone with issues! I have never seen a green analyist with such moxie. He thinks he's the Malcom X of sports. He does make some points, most are incredibly wrong, but I would actually take Stephen A. Smith over Bill Williamson at this point.

Im not sure if Adam went 4 in a row. Right before the 2004 draft, his prediction was that the Broncos would select WR Lee Evans. Now to be fair, he was already gone but i dont think Adam was even on the mark because Shanny said his four key targets were Reggie Williams, Tommie Harris, Mark Clayton and D.J. Williams.

That's correct, but wasn't it Michael Clayton?
From what I learned after the draft a year ago, Shanahan wanted Clayton real bad...so much so he tried almost every means possible to work a switch with the Bucs.
More than a few believe that Shanahan, more than anyone else including his scouts, actually convinced Jon Gruden he should draft Clayton...which he did...and Shanahan was right about the kid.

..and, aw gee, we get stuck with DJ Williams...(I still have a working alter to the football Gods for that one)
Why would you want the next Marvin Harrison? Your crazy.

I busted on Schef a few times... Mostly when he deserved it. I always knew big news was coming down the pike when Schefter would write an "opinion" article about what the Broncos "should" do, as if it were his orignial idea... That kind of front running annoys me. But then, at least he'd give us something to talk about right before it happened...

Its funny that every time this hack writes an article on the Broncos, another debate about his time in Denver is waged. He wasn't talentless, but he was needlessly condescending and the whole food review thing was arrogant and embarrassing.
Back to the point of the article, Mike's reasoning for doing this is sound. With all the new faces this year, anything that improves the continuity is a good idea. Its also good to break up that long stretch of free time in the summer. Some of these genuises are no good at thinking for themselves for extended periods of time. They need the structure of the team/job environment.

Marvin Harrison is a 5'10" and 178lbs speedster who runs precise routes and has very sure hands.
Michael Clayton is 6'4" and 210lbs, lanky, physical, natural athlete who has limitless potential.
I don't see the immediate comparison between the two other than that they are both very productive, but are two very different types of player.

I'd trade Adam for Burger Bill in a heart beat.
We had it good and did not know it.
So true.
As a beat reporter he was pretty solid. He had the scoop many times before the mainstream was even speculating about it.
Where he really fell off was the food reviews (WTF was he thinking) and his endless droning about how hard he works, how little free time he has and his own general aura of self importance.
Ask me if I’d trade him back for Williamson – yes in a heartbeat. Not because Schef was great but because Williamson really, really sucks.
