Kanell: Taking Challenges As They Come

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- With two eager quarterbacks entering their second training camp with designs on the No. 2 quarterback slot, Danny Kanell has had scant time to pause on the field.

That's been just as true off of it, as well. A few days of business training from the prestigious Wharton School of Business, another follow-up Wharton session this past weekend in San Francisco, and a wedding left Kanell's offseason schedule overflowing with life-altering activity.
"I wouldn't have it any other way," Kanell said.
The same is true of his situation on the field. Fellow backups Matt Mauck and Bradlee Van Pelt do not posess Kanell's volume of regular-season, game-action experience, but their youth coupled with one year of experience in the Broncos' system puts long-term potential in their corner.
But that doesn't cause the veteran Kanell to fret one bit.
"I’m trying to take care of my own business. I think it’s reflected on the field," Kanell said. "I never look over my shoulder."
What Kanell does have going for him is more than two years of experience in the team's offensive scheme. The lack of background in Head Coach Mike Shanahan's system that proved to be an issue when he was forced into game action two seasons ago now has become a strong point.
071105_store_offer.jpgIn fact, he has now been in Shanahan's system for a longer continuous stretch than any other in his career. The New York Giants changed coaches from Dan Reeves to Jim Fassel prior to Kanell's second season in the league, and he played two years under Fassel before going to Atlanta -- where Reeves had landed -- for the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
"I’ve got a really good grasp of it -- the intricacies and the little ins and outs that Coach Shanahan really tries to stress," Kanell said.
That gives Kanell confidence that he can not only take over in a pinch -- which he didn't have to do last year when Jake Plummer took every offensive snap -- but can thrive, and can do better than he's ever done, better even than his 1997 season when he led the Giants to their first division title in seven years.
"Definitely," Kanell said. "I'm such a more mature quarterback now. I’ve learned a lot from my travels. You could say I definitely feel like I'd be in a position to have more success."
And the maturity gained by his years in Denver's offense and the seven seasons of prior NFL experience could prove to be his most important assets as the scrum for the No. 2 slot begins in earnest at the close of the month.
Whay hasn't anyone posted this yet!?!!?!?!? :~ohyah!:
